Al and Ron Go Head to Head

This should be one of the more colorful debates on the issue of the Peace Bridge plaza expansion. The hour-long debate, brought to you by the First Amendment Club, will feature Ron Rienas, General Manager of the Buffalo and Fort Erie Public Bridge Authority and Al Coppola, community representative, former NY State Senator and businessman. It all takes place February 18th at 7 PM at the Armory Restaurant, 311 Connecticut Street. The format goes like this: Judith Einach will moderate and members of the media will ask questions.
Many of you know about Al Coppola's determination to save the neighborhoods that are currently sitting in the path of ‘progress’. Al recently vowed to move his little white Pan Am house into the neighborhood in order to bring attention to the issue. Ron Rienas has been the vocal spokesperson for the Public Bridge Authority, and has agreed to debate Al under the spotlight of the media.
This will be an excellent opportunity to get some of the facts on public record. How many houses are coming down? Some say 90, while some say around 70. 'Seven to Save' puts the number at zero. If the PBA solidifies a number, can that number change? What about the parking issues? Is it better to build up... underground... or not at all? How does the design fit in with future DOT and City plans to downgrade surrounding roadways? Does the recent announcement by Ambassador Bridge group change things? What are the rumors... and what are the facts?

Four games in 6 nights certainly marks a rough patch in a schedule, and the Buffalo Sabres showed what kind of toll it can take by losing to the Nashville Predators 2-0 on home ice.
To be fair, both teams played an uninspired game from start to finish, which makes sense when you consider that the Predators played 3 games in 5 nights. There were few exciting scoring chances on either side of the ice and the game's pace was both stilted and broken. It was likely due to the coache …
From Hoss: "Is Kabob and Curry opening at the old Mondo location on Elmwood, or Main? I haven't been to their primary eatery on Transit, but I hear they serve the best Indian food around."
Kabab and Curry will open in about two weeks at the former Mondo Video location... approximately mid-December. I understand that it will be more of a take-out operation than the existing restaurant located on Transit Road. It appears as if the Transit eatery attracts a lot of university student …

This past week, I sang at Lafayette Avenue Presbyterian Church, located at the corner of Elmwood and Lafayette, as part of the Elmwood Village Association's holiday tree lighting ceremony. It was the first time I ever sang my very personal song, “Who Wants To Cry At Christmas,” in front of the public. There were about 80 people gathered to hear me and my piano-playing friend Johnny Juarez present our “Chri …
As the global financial crisis throws economies around the world into recession, more and more industries are getting hit. Banks have been bailed out. Auto manufacturers are drowning. Newspapers, though, were ahead of their time as they've been dying slowly for more than a decade.
Warren Buffett, the legendary investor and owner of our hometown Buffalo News, acknowledged the fate of newspapers in his 2006 shareholder letter when he wrote:
Nevertheless, this operation faces …

If the best the "community" can do in terms of finding people to represent them is Al Coppola and Bill Zimmerman, they have a lot bigger issues to deal with. I mean is this REALLY the best "voices" they can deliver?
If Al gets schooled in the debate is he going to move his house to Ron's front yard in protest?

Isn't it also a bit loaded to have Ms Einach as moderator? I recall a BRO post in which she seemed rather mesmerized by Mr Reinass's version of "truth". Will Channel 17 broadcast this in full?

i recently compared the Bashir's battle with the unions as a 'Mothra VS Godzilla" epic struggle.
by that measure i would bill this bout as 'itchy VS scratchy' in the main ring.
why do the gods of idiocracy take such unmitigated delight in tormenting us thus?

Wit and Insight both dropped out of this match early. This card, hastily drawn up at the last minute can only entertain if there is some blood drawn. look to the promoters to egg these opponents on and see if a chair or two gets raised. For my money, Ron "The Rectum" Reinas will triumph over the diminuitive Al "Little House" Coppola. The split is now at 6-2. Anyone out there moving the line?

Damp,
That depends. Is Al going to hit the bar with Bill before the showdown? If booze is involved, all bets are off. :)

It's for that very reason that it was requested that the bar close for two hours before the match. Angry patrons will have to "prep" themselves down the block. It was a difficult decision, but given the histories of these combatants, it was inevitable.

Be careful Ron - you may hurt Al's feelings...
Is Al bringing his house? Or is he flying solo on this one?

When push comes to shove, the real question is: which speaker isn't being paid to make his case, which speaker owns property in Buffalo, NY, which one LIVES in Buffalo NY, which one speaks from his heart and which from his paycheck (and on behalf of the paychecks of others)?

The idea that this serious issue for Buffalo may end up as a sideshow - shades of the Gore-Perot debate on NAFTA - strikes me as unfortunate.

I believe that, although getting older Al can still deal with adversity, just curious, but can the audience pose questions from the debaters. It would be cool to find out what bloggers, in person had the grit to reveal what their positions were . Just curious why wasn't Jim Kane invited to this event.
