Peace Bridge: Part 4: Health First —Who is Allowing the West Side Asthma Epidemic?

Story Options

The health of a community thrust in sickness at asthmatic epidemic proportions, but unheard from, is enough proof of argument to gain proper and over due attention to the PBA debate. Make the discussion about people’s Health, not a troll bridge’s wealth.

Scientists have long known traffic fumes worsened everyday life for asthmatics. However, research on both sides of the Atlantic now suggests that tiny "particulates" from idling diesel exhausts can sidestep the body's natural defences and actually set off asthma—even heart attacks, and coronary thrombosis.

Many similar parts of the world has asthma help and prevention programs where equally plagued by heavily concentrated diesel particulates. But not a word here-- there's nothing for Buffalo’s asthma and cancer epidemic West Side. California initiates programs such as “Don’t Sit Idle” for their areas beleaguered by trucks sitting idle for long periods spewing poisonous diesel particulate emissions into the community.

They know this literally kills people regularly. The whole world knows this. But we don’t have programs like that here—because we’d be afraid to admit the damage being plagued upon a community at epidemic rates of asthma, cancer, and other prevalancies on Buffalo’s west side.

In our PBA Part One, we introduced the very real and frightening health-science aspects. People listened and responded.

In our PBA Part Two, we introduced the reactions to those health and science issues, and cited corruption covering up those issues, and people (readers) responded.

In our PBA Part Three, we presented some frank and open business element discussions and guess what—it received more or less angst and “who cares” comments—“just build the damn bridge attitudes” and more frustration.

Believe it, the health issues are world renowned about the West Side. But Buffalo's politicians are not listening. This issue isn't about anyone's wealth, large or small. This issue is ONLY about health, of hundreds, and yet hundreds and thousands more in the future to get sick because of diesel particulates from idling truck emissions.

The world over is awakening to the issue…but not the PBA/PBG. Have they launched or even discussed openly a “Don’t Sit Idle” Initiative for their 24-7 five miles of trucks that flow their poisons in a prevailing southwesterly flow? No.

The Pacific Institute in California reports that: The San Francisco Bay Area Ditching Dirty Diesel Collaborative launched its “Don’t Sit Idle” campaign. Citizens reacted and politicians joined when a law limiting diesel truck idling to five minutes has been in place for a year was only sporadically enforced and a loophole allows truckers to idle their vehicles overnight. The California Air Resources Board (CARB) held hearings to close the loophole. The Pacific Institute reported the following:

“It has fallen on our communities to get the word out about the health, environmental, and legal ramifications of diesel idling,” said Karen Pierce of the Bayview Hunters Point Community Advocates. “Limiting truck idling to five minutes isn’t courtesy, it’s the law.” And yet, the PBA allows truck idling 24-7 for miles of back-up, and far worse than that—they don’t and won’t even discuss the issue openly. They mandate we remain ignorant, and the press and leadership of this town support that mandate.

Diesel exhaust was declared a toxic air contaminant in 1998 by CARB. It is harmful to respiratory health, particularly in children and the elderly. Numerous studies connect air pollution to asthma, premature death, lung cancer, and other respiratory conditions.

If there's a Buffalo group out there that earnestly wants to stop the process that the PBA is sure to win, then it needs to apply a Lois Gibbs Love Canal attitude to the issue, and go beyond the local politicians, bring in the national media, and larger health organizations.

That's ALL you've got for choice action. And don't go local-- no one is listening-- instead, bring the reams of scientific data to national media. Specify your cadre and your concern. It's all about health, not wealth-- not the PBA's wealth, and not even the homeowners.

Rise up above the local politicians and speak about the truth of kids and old folks dying, asthma epidemics, the Hispanic plague of asthma on the West Side of Buffalo due to the Peace Bridge. The Peace Bridge is co-owned by its one half American side, and its one-half Canadian strong arm side. The Canadian side has already sued and won against citizens daring to speak out against it--- their laws are different there.

Pick your battles, they say-- but if you care about the thousands of people on Buffalo's West Side-- pick This battle because people are dying because of the truck's idling diesel fuel emissions. Clarkson, UB, McMasters, Cornell, and Harvard all are concerned after studying the area of Buffalo’s west side.

The epidemic respiratory sickness levels are so high they run off the charts and the southwest winds prevail from the opening of the Peace Bridge right up to and beyond Elmwood Avenue, and from all the areas from the Hispanic community to the brink of North Buffalo.

Buffalo locals are bought off or quieted in other ways. There's a deafening quietude of lack of conscience. The needed locals do not care. Instead-- take this argument and go national with this and count on the world's science studies of the West Side catching the right attention. Then watch the ball of this issue start to roll.

It's not about your house. It's not about PBA wealth. It's not about the bridge. It's about a health epidemic the bridge has already caused and everyone in this town is bought off to make even worse. Make that your theme—nationally.

Everyone rationalizes to finds their excuses-- some say it's that diesel emissions will be under control by 2010. Hum bug. That's only for new trucks, and only moderately then. Millions of grandfathered truck will remain for decades, spewing their deadly deeds.

What’s the issue then? Everyone on the PBA’s side seems to say “It’s the economy stupid.” But what of the health ramifications, and the medical findings that show diesel particulates are so small that they can sneak through the lungs' natural defences and damage the body's cells, causing asthma and other respiratory illnesses in people. The same mechanism is now being linked to heart attacks and coronary thrombosis.

Raise your voices and let the world outside our diesel-filled and politically “asleep at the wheel” town of “Briga-doom” know the rest about us and our leaders’ lack of concern. We’re not going to win this battle in our soul-bought hometown turf. This needs must go national or bust. Someone, somewhere, may care.

Somebody pray that is so.

If you have the science, as well as the anecdotal testimony of scores of impacted folks, then take it to a courtroom. If your cries are being ignored by the mainstream media and the court of public opinion proves an inadequate venue, file in the real courts. This is what courts are for, to HEAR the story and WEIGH the evidence. Injunct this nasty design to hell and back; that's what people do in these situations. If this is not the remedy you seek, then I'm sorry but SHUT UP ALREADY!! You guys just are one really determined lawyer away from me caring about this. Find that person before everyone else gets this irritated.

Too bad you are sick of hearing about these issues Damp-get off your computer and go to bed. You don't have to be part of the discussion if you choose. I hope you don't have problems falling asleep because of any breathing problems. Maybe you can lie awake all night listening to your child's breathing, hoping you will not have to make a trip to the ER.
Your irritation should be directed at your public officials who are elected to help the people-they are the "public servants" -and not at the people who have been injured by their silence on these health issues.
If you are not part of the solution, YOU are part of the problem!
Buffalo has an opportunity to do something better and to lessen these health problems. If you don't believe that doing it right is a possibility, then why don't you pack up your bags and leave Buffalo-forever. We won't miss you!

Take your crusade into the courts. It will end there anyway. What are you waiting for? A pro-bono publicity whore?

Thanks for beating this particular drum, Bill. Maybe we won't get any appreciation of the diesel fume threat to kids in the city until it dawns on remote suburban schools served by the Laidlaw Express that they're poisoning their kids by subjecting them to idling school bus fumes.

Quite apart from RisingDamp's dismissive attitude, he or she is right. Get a lawyer, like, yesterday, and sue the PBA.

lets not forget those midwest coal power plants (ohio in particular. thanks very much, you smoke beltching buckeyes!) that spew their smoke high into the air, coming down from here to quebec. mmmmm. polute-rific!

not that im suggesting that idling trucks make for good breathing.

its too bad that there isnt a clean and fast transportation method out there. i could see it now: on steel rails with steel wheels to reduce friction. less likelyhood of acciedents due to a fixed guideway. even electrically powered. it would look like a bunch of trucks or buses all connected.

    naw, thats just crazy.

On the subject of getting a lawyer...

The group(s) fighting the PBA for various reasons (land heritage, community semblance, and health among the many issues) do, in fact have lawyers-- good ones.

The problem is that the issues are too many and too buried and too local and nearly too late. The purpose of this particular article is to insight a call to order the argument into one clarion cry for help for health-- health only-- and to take it to levels beyond local deaf ears.

Saving the heritage community, its tax base and legacy is critically important to those in the know, but all too many other people disengage from caring about them as progress seeks to take over...so that argument, that fight becomes one that can affix to the health argument's tail if need be. It's a sincere, proper, good argurment for sure. But none of the arguments match the power of the one for health.

SLEEPL8-Your community is next. The trucks are moving in next door to your home soon. Start packing!
How about the people who will be left behind? Everyone should just move? What about those who do not have the economic resources to just pick up and find another place to live?
Yep damp-we've got a great lawyer already, but it takes an army of lawyers to fight the PBA. They have unlimited resources to prolong this battle in court. It is going to take more people standing up for what is right to make a difference here. Because the ultra fine particulates are invisible, people don't even realize what it is that is compromising their health. Diesel pollution is an invisible monster not showing its ugly face until it has already caused damage and irritation to your body. Don't our public officials already have a responsibility to protect the health of our community?

    Zimmerman,

Would it make sense to think that Customs agents and bridge employees would have the highest rate of asthma cases than anyone else because they work right next to it day in and day out? Has anyone looked into this? If they don't then could we put this whole idea to rest?

PBL, what other option is there? already it's been stated above that the media, the politicians and other power centers have all ignored this potentially devasting claim. Think about it. When you allege the poisoning of a large population geographically proximate to the bridge project, you are enlarging the issue to not only the PBA proposal which is right now, only on paper, but the PRE-EXISTING BRIDGE. This is too huge a ounumdrum to wait for the public's consensus to be altered or for a politico to reverse course and go with your assumptions. It's too late in the game for this, the only way to get their attention is to PRAY FOR INJUNCTIVE RELIEF. The courts are the only sensible option. Judges are more powerful than PBAs, politicians and anchormen! But know what you are up against should you succeed in injuncting this project: thirty years of Federal govermnent administrations that are in the back pocket of the trucking industry, U.S. Customs and Immigration experts, and area politicians that believe that this project IS the future of the Western NY economy. You don't need an "army of lawyers" to sway a judge and win an injunction, but you will need to have your facts straight because the issue of diesel exhaust is a powder keg that few have dared to try setting off, and no one on Planet Earth has succeeded in doing.( The European Union may get around to this in the next ten years.)

... Also know that if your arguments were heard and the PBA were forced to reverse course, consider that they may find it more economical to apply eminent domain and simply relocate those people most affected by smog, demolish their homes and use the property for an empowerment industrial zone next to the Bridge. 120 houses? how about 1200 houses? How high do the stakes go? I say put the brakes on their cockamamie scheme in the courts and get that dialogue started while the beast is still stunned.

Here's a great podcast from NPR to listen to about Commerce, CA , about diesel pollution and the health problems.

WE WILL BE STOPPING THIS FOOLISHNESS.
We do know what we are up against. New Yorkers are sick and tired of politicians not listening to us. We know the political payoffs are driving these projects.
Anyone who does the know the facts about the environmental issues and historical legacy of this waterfront community knows that this preferred footprint is the most idiotic plan the PBA has ever thought up.
