Party on the Portico this Friday

The events take place between five and eight (dates listed below) and there is food, wine, beer, water etc. served. Expect live music (Gypsy Jazz quartet Babik this Friday) along with the occasional WBFO basket raffle. There are also CDs and merchandise auctioned off during the course of the evening. Exhibits are all open to the attendees - right now the Bon Voyage exhibit is in the main court. It’s an exhibit of travel mementos that belonged to Buffalo travelers from 1830 to 1930. See what was hip to carry (jewelry to weaponry) back in the day. All this kicks off this Friday, May 18th, while experiencing the incredible views, which overlook Mirror Lake and the Japanese Gardens. Historical Society Museum, 25 Nottingham Court at Elmwood Avenue.
June 15 – Music by John and Mary
-
July 20 – Music by DKQ (David Kane Quartet)
-
August 24 – Music by Wendell Rivera’s Latin Jazz Ensemble
Admission for the Party on the Portico events is $5 for Historical Society members; $10 for non-members, and the events are sponsored by M&T Bank with support from WBFO 88.7.

As some may know, the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society’s museum building was the NYS pavilion during the Pan-American Exposition. Sitting in the exact same place as it always has in the museum building is the Steinway & Sons grand piano, custom-built 107 years ago for the exposition. Stephen Baker, the BPO’s Associate Executive Director, will bring the grand piano to life at “Music for a Sunday Afternoon” on Sunday, July 6.
Baker comes from California and has ha …
Can anyone tell me why the vast number of cafĂ©s and restaurants in the city do not recycle? I’m actually having a hard time coming up with more than a couple that do. I am constantly walking back to the cash registers with papers and plastics asking where the recycle bins are. And I’m repeatedly told that there is no recycling policy in place. That means that the only way to recycle is to do it yourself… and who wants to carry papers and plastics around with them until they …
One of the things that I really enjoy at the Thursday at the Square concert series is watching all of the young people congregate on Main Street. Last evening I found out that there is a new policy in place that forbids these kids from hanging out near Lafayette Square. From what I understand, a couple of fights broke out last Thursday and a shop window got broken. I can understand that there should be a concern when these incidents happen, but shooing everyone away because a coup …
After the 2006 October snowstorm, Re-Tree WNY was established with the goal to restore the 8400 trees that were destroyed in Buffalo during the October 2006 storm. Re-Tree WNY has been gradually climbing towards their goal with 2,730 trees currently planted in Buffalo and a plea for organizations to join Re-Tree WNY during their planting this November of 2,000 trees.
Even if you're not a member of an organization, Re-Tree WNY is encouraging individuals who would like to plant …

i don't want to hate, but i have got to agree with carl on this one. the potential is there, just misguided.
if you want to "engage a younger crowd", don't charge $10 to see John and Mary while sitting on some steps.
the exhibits may be more alluring with cocktail in hand, though...
does the Historical Society get any of that money?
