PBFs - Home of the deep fried burger?

Story Options

It was only a week ago that my doctor told me I should be watching my cholesterol intake. And it was just this morning that I got a phone-call asking whether I might want to check out Parkside Burgers and Fries - 'Home of the deep fried burger'. It's funny, this past Saturday we were hanging out over at Sunday Skate when JP, owner of the shop, told us that deep frying Mars bars was all the rage in England. So when the call came through this morning I figured that maybe the deep fried 'delicacy' should be examined a bit more closely.

I asked Kate Brinkworth, the owner/operator of the deep fried burger joint, how she came to open up such an... ‘unusual’ concept restaurant. "I was watching the Food Network," she told me. "And they were featuring fried patties. The host said that they were really good, so I decided to experiment with an entire burger... bun and all. Basically, we prepare the burger just like someone would order it at a regular restaurant. Then we deep-fry the whole thing. You need a note from your cardiologist that gives you permission to eat one. A side of fries, onion rings or potato wedges comes free with each order, and we throw in a bottle of pop too. If you're not in the mood for a deep fried burger, we also have a deep fried hotdog (served on a non-deep fried bun), and we're experimenting with deep fried pickles. We're also considering the deep fried candy bar concept... though we're drawing the line at deep fried Twinkies."

If you think that deep-frying an entire burger is easy, it's not. It's a special type of spiced-batter (top secret) that is used to create the final product. The burger may look like a variation of a Friday fish fry, but the ingredients and the process are a bit different. Kate even had to design special tongs to pick up the creation. If you're not in the mood for anything deep-fried, PBFs also serves deli ham and turkey sandwiches, grilled cheese, chicken melts, Italian sausage, chicken wings, regular burgers and dogs, and another unusual concept... a chicken wing sausage patty served on a bun with blue cheese dressing. This is quite a change from the former Parkside Café – a restaurant that opened for a short period of time last year. Kate figured that since there was a new pizza place just down the street, it was time to come up with a different concept. So she sold the pizza ovens and is going in another direction. Along with the concept burgers, the plan is to install soda bar equipment. Starting this spring, PBFs will be serving up shakes, Flurries, and sundaes... the burger joint will double as a full service ice cream and float bar.

I can tell you that I've never tried anything quite like a deep fried burger ... and Kate does not suggest that anyone eat her deep fried creation on a regular basis. Actually, I only managed to eat half, but didn't feel bad since only a couple of customers have managed to eat the entire thing. That's why she opted to add different sandwiches, grill items and even a kids' menu to the list of offerings. Or you can go all out and order The Ultimate - a triple cheeseburger made the classic way... I guess that's not deep-fried or it would have been named ‘The Ambulance’.

Kate is looking for artists who specialize in Buffalo-related photographs and paintings to display on the restaurant walls (for sale). If you are interested, just stop on in and bring some samples.

Parkside Burger and Fries is located at 2 Russell Avenue (the old Park Meadow), corner of Parkside - across from the Buffalo Zoo. The phone is 716-837-0601. Eat in or take out.

It is good that there will be ice cream served closer to my house. Normally, I make my way down to the Hatch for Ice Cream.

Hope it works... Tough location - one way street going on to overburdened parkside with zero parking.

after I get bored with Nutrisystem - I probably would give it a try.

Moved in to North Buff in '01.... But I remember a bar there at one time. Did the neighborhood complaints close it?

I watched the same show Ms. Brinkworth watched. If I'm not mistaken it was Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives On it some restaurant actually does serve deep-fried burgers. Guy Fieri fried one on cmaera for the show. But are Buffalonians really this clueless when it comes to healthy eating?

BuffedOut> But are Buffalonians really this clueless when it comes to healthy eating?

Ever seen the 1950s retro-style menus that are still placed on the tables of so many area restaurants? Ever see the pizzerias and red-sauce Italian restaurants on ever other corner? Ever see an inventory of local cuisine - chicken wings, beef on weck, Buffalo-style sweet sauce thick-crust pizza, manhole-sized slabs of beer-battered haddock fish fry, sponge candy, surf-and-turf, and Texas hots? Ever notice how you'll find plenty of ten-page "Who has the best fish fry?" threads on local message boards, but almost nothing on healthier alternatives? Ever notice how hard it can be to find a "healthy" restaurant in Buffalo compared to your experiences in other cities?

A deep fried burger? Only in Buffalo.

I live in the hood, and will definitely pop in, but I'm not going near that thing. I once had deep fried Oreos that were pretty killer, but knowing that burger is available locally will probably raise my health insurance rates.

Parking availability (on street or lot) makes this location a bit tuff. But if the food, service, and ambience can transcend that, it shouldn't be a problem. It gets crazy crowded in the summertime with the park and zoo activity. I really look forward to the soda fountain as well. My daughter will just be of the age where an evening stroll for a cone or float will be perfect.

I did hear that in the past, the neighbors complained about the bar that was there, and supposedly, a license will never be issued for that location again. According to the rumor mill at least. Parkside definitely needs a neighborhood bar though. It's the major thing lacking. I'm surprised nobody has opened one in the old Parkside Candy on W. Oakwood and Main. I peeked in a couple months ago, and the place is in mint condition. The wood work is immaculate, and almost looks to be in turn key condition. Since the sleazy corner store shut down, it's become a pretty mellow locale as well.

The bar was known as the PM (Park Meadow) and was THE place to be during the eighties. The parties often spilled over into Delaware Park and the surrounding Parkside neighboorhood. I believe this was a Kevin Brinkworth bar (Locker Room,Brunners etc)

I grew up on this block of Parkside and remember my parents having problems with patrons from the old Parkside Meadow bar urinating in our driveway and I think one of the guys got drunk there and jumped the fence at the zoo and got into the polar bear exhibit. Just something to think of.....beer and wild animals probably don't mix.

I wish the Brinkworth's all the lunck...between Colter Bay, brink's & I think they also own Morrisey's in the Cobblestone district. They have a lot of experience and hopefully they can turn this place around. The building itself needed (and I still think needs) a lot of work. As other people noted, there is zero parking.

Take it easy people - split a burger with someone else. Moderation on indulgencies like these is key. Newell, drop a dime on the Century Grill. Saturdays are "Bacon Saturday" which means that while sitting at the bar or in a booth, they bring you basket after basket of fried bacon. I love it! And try Century's "Rod Jeremy". It's two half-inch thick bologny steaks stuffed with cheddar, slapped together and deep fried then they drop it on a bun and bring the Weber's!! MAN FOOD!

Ok, I have the solution for those who are complaining about the health issue and the parking.

Walk to the restaurant, order the burger, get a shake too, and WALK BACK. Easy. Do not repeat every day, maybe once or twice a spring/summer/fall evening. For you folks closer to downtown, ride a bike there.

Why is it always burgers or Snickers Bars or Oreo Cookies? I want deep fried Haute Cuisine. Deep fried Oso Bucco, deep fried Frisee aux Lardons, deep fried sea urchin in lobster gelee.

I always thought that this location needs to pull in lots of Zoo bound patrons since the parking is so difficult. Parkside needs a restaurant. Hopefully, this works out. I would also love to see something go into the old Parkside Candy shop or another building to build some mass around the Lake Effect Laundromat catering to Parkside residents and Canisius/Medaille students.

Simcoe - do you mean deep fried pizza project? It'll be rather hard to deep fry a pizzeria. Butch Bifuolco tried that one years ago. Didn't work.

And what does a name have to do with anything? This site is run by people with names like Newell, Barry and Elena...Otis all of a sudden isn't so bad. And from what I hear, your name is not so great, either...

parking is an issue when you're dealing with a restaurant without much foot traffic. People attending the Zoo don't feel like crossing the street and people driving by will do just that...I wish them well but I'm failrly confident this won't last too long......at least a coffee shop would be more likely to get a regular crowd too...I can't imagine eating deep fried anything more than once every few months
