Outer Harbor Bike Trail

Outer Harbor Bike Trail

Story Options

For all intents and purposes, the Outer Harbor bike trail is now open to the public. I took my bike for a spin in order to test it out last evening and it was a lot of fun. The winding trail wraps along the shore of Lake Erie, and to tell you the truth, the Niagara River trail doesn’t even come close in comparison. Other than the noise from the traffic on Route 5, which was muffled last night due to the strong wind off the lake, this trail is perfect. Riders can take the trail from the Times Beach Nature Preserve, along the lake, over to Dug’s Dive for lunch, and wind up at the boardwalk by the NFTA Small Boat Harbor and Gallagher ‘Pebble’ Beach. And some day that ride might even begin at the Coast Guard Lighthouse.

Unfortunately there is no easy way to bike to the Outer Harbor from the city. Last evening I biked over the Ohio Street Bridge, up Ohio Street and over a fairly dangerous unnamed bridge next to Gerdau Ameristeel (metals recycling). I took a peek under the bridge to see if there was an easier route, but it looked pretty tough. So I rode over the bridge and ended up at the entrance to Dug’s Dive. From there I backtracked down Fuhrmann Boulevard until I came to an entrance to the Outer Harbor Trail. The trek to get there from the city was worth it, but most people will probably want to throw their bikes into a car and head out.

I asked one of the guys working on the Outer Harbor project what route he would suggest for a city biker to come by and he said, “Wait for The Skyway to come down.” I don’t know if anyone can wait that long. In the meantime it is very frustrating that the original Michigan Avenue connection is still missing after being taken out by a freighter decades ago.

Replacing that bridge would be prudent to say the least. Since The Skyway is apparently not coming down, that connection makes the most sense. I’m not sure if General Mills would like people biking past their mills though… at least that’s the reason (many say) that the bridge was never replaced!

Fantastic. Glad to see the trail is open. I never knew a Michigan Street bridge existed - that would certainly make life easier in riding/walking over to the outer harbor. I too take Ohio Street to the end, then hang a right all the way down to the Coast Guard station.

    Actually...

I wouldn't count on the Skyway staying permenantly. It'll be several years, but, I know funds were allocated in to engineering studies to replace it for FY-'09 and FY '10.

Which means it's the first step in a lengthy process to remove it... It isn't coming down overnight, but I far from think the idea is dead.

Assuming there isn't some Skyway-friendly special interest group that'll sue to keep it up. :)

I was driving up route 5 to the city the other day and noticed all of the work being done on the outer harbor. It looks like it will really be nice when it's all done. I'm looking forward to getting my bike or roller blades out there to check it out sometime.

Michigan street bridge is not just a must for bikers and pedestrians to access the outer harbor but also a major component of alternative access to the city to promote removing the skyway. Until we have that bridge and maybe one more the DOT would never allow the Skyway to come down no matter how hard we fight. Can be seen by their obvious disregard for public input for the route 5 project even when places like hamburg said its unnecessary.

Try walking it sometime.. it takes 3 hours to get from the erie basin marina to the coast guard station.. I did it once. The skyway which costs million and millions of dollars to improve access still ignores a fundamental population of our city. Residents without cars and tourists. If we have the money to spend that much on just maintaining the skyway but somehow cry poor when people propose something that would provide pedestrian access. BS.

Great news can't wait to cycle to the Outer Harbor and check it out; can't believe this is finally taking shape, more progress is on the way as well. The Skyway is the only major obstacle in Buffalo having a trully wonderfull waterfront. NY DOT is again blocking Buffalo from attaining its true potential... wow there is a suprise.

At the risk of being labeled as complaining about anything.....

Why did they make the path wind back and forth like that? Wouldn't they want people to be able to enjoy riding on the waterfront, watching the boats, without having to keep a constant eye on the path lane as it moves left and right? Windy paths are for bland suburban areas to make it interesting where theres nothing else to look at. A simple straight path probably would be more well suited for this location unless the terrain actually required it to be different.

    Regardless, glad its open.

townline really? i wish there was some way to type something that would express the same as me shaking my head.

It's great that they finished it up right in time for all of route 5 traffic to be diverted to fuhrmann blvd for the next year. it's gonna look like a game of frogger down there...but at least once the construction is over we'll still have an elevated road....wait a minute!!! son of a... (another head shaking thing)

yeah, really. Its a small thing at this point, but, as a planner, it makes me wonder about what people were thinking when they designed it. There are many different ways to design a path, appropriate for different locations, and it just made me wonder why they chose this one for this location. Not a huge deal, but it just seems to be a senseless part of the design. Does it really need to wind back and forth for it to be a nice design?

Again, not a big deal, I'm sure its a great path and I look forward to riding it.

seeing as how i'm a planner too..... it's fine. there's a mild curve and if you look in the picture the rest of looks pretty straight. it's perfectly appropriate. we're not talking about lombard st. who knows the whole thing could be straight as an arrow except for this one picture. on the other hand it could wind back and forth too, my point is people rush to over examine ever story and picture on here. i don't mean to jump on you, but people being over critical on here is one of my pet peeves. sorry.

can't wait to make my way down there and find out first hand!!

I think the curved design of the pathway is appropriate, it is more natural looking and flows with the shoreline. Also a curved path will act as a moderator for speed as far as cyclists are concerned, relax the pace so roller bladers and pedestrians can enjoy this trail as well. If you want a straight line path check out the rails to trails conversion Clarence bike path, straight for miles on end... pretty boring if you ask me. Again this is a great development and I can't wait unitl some small vendors, restarants, and cafes possibly show up here as well. I wonder what is the time frame for the Coast Card to consolidate their facilities so the public can gain access to the light house?

Is the path clean enough for rollerblading yet, or is there a lot of mud on it?

I think townline is responding to the less then graceful curve. it looks like the path is trying to avoid something and could create an awkward condition for bikes moving in opposing direction. it should arc more gently.

But the path awsome.. just that it is finally there...a great bike ride!

Larger trees should have been planted. Those little guys are going to have a tough time with the wind.

Looks great. can't wait to go for a bike ride and do some fishing.

Regardless of all our opinions some of which may differ and my terrible typing in my last post I think we can all come to the same consensus that this project is a stepping stone for many more things to come, the momentum is there; hopefully the developers will be as well!

One thing I don't get is why everyone is so anti skyway when the 190 cuts right through downtown and is an elevated road too right along the water>> at least the skyway provides nice views..on a clear day you can see the Falls and if you light it up it could be a nice feature. All you need is a small pedestrian bridge to be built to make the connection. And when I visited the new harbor area I did not mind the bridge, it was not noisy and it actually made a nice backdrop in many of the pictures I took.

WOW! I made this trek over Ohio St to these trails twice this week and it really is not that bad. I even pulled my kids in the trailer and was totally comfrotable with the ride. Ohio could use a bike lane clean up but it was ok. Its funny that your talking about that bridge because my wife and I talked about it all day. We started in Allentown, went to the new canal area and then trek over to the Times beach site using those paths around the old Pier site. Times beach is awesome and I could not believe I never knew it was there. If only we could have a bridge connecting the inner harbor to the outer harbor. The City of Buffalo was looking good to me today, and its getting better each day!!!

Those pictures look nice. Sucks about the noise from the elevated section of Route 5.

I'm afraid that noise will always take away from any fishing piers, bike paths, or 'olmstedian' parkways. I hate that noise

Ditto what rb66 said about the trees. Should have spent a bit of money to buy more mature/larger trees, and could at least staked them properly. The way the wind is down there- they'll probably end up in someone's backyard in West Seneca before long.

Who is responsible for trail and landscape maintenance? NFTA? That'll be scary.

WCP...I doubt it is the NFTA since they are basically giving(ot it may have already happened) over control of the parcel to the ECDHC.

To those who have been down there, does the path run all the way to the former location of Shooters?

I'm new to area and am intrigued with your article - could someone tell me where this Outer Harbor Trail is and how to get to it? I'm trying to find something enjoyable to do for my husband's upcoming birthday and this sounds like it something we would enjoy. If anyone has any other ideas or knows of any "hidden treasure" in the Buffalo area, please let me know.
