Michael Gainer of Buffalo ReUse has just had his profile featured in New York Times Magazine. Just last week my sister called me from Boston and asked whether I was familiar with Michael - it looks as if his business has not just taken off locally, it is gaining recognition outside the area as well. Obviously there are other cities around the country that can learn from our fellow Buffalonians. This morning I happened upon Peter Panepento's blog called Outside Erie and the question arose whether Erie, PA should be looking to host an Erie Homecoming similar to what Buffalo has organized.

It's great to see that more and more of our grassroots organizations are getting recognized for being creative and innovative. These are assets that we should be continually marketing to cities all over the country. People like Harvey Garrett, Julie O'Neill, Michael Gainer, David Torke, Justin Booth, Peg Overdorf, Marilyn Rodgers, Marti Gorman, Aaron Bartley, and Michele Johnson have made a real name for themselves due to their hands-on efforts to create a better Buffalo. So when any one of these (and many more) people get recognized in an outside media sources… it's all good. As BRO commentor 'bison716' likes to say, "Good news! Keep it moving".

Great recognition for Michael and Buffalo. Out of all Buffalo's assets (architecture, location on the water, Olmsted Park System, etc.) I've often felt that the greatest is the active, progressive individuals and groups which have been working to revitalize the city. From what I've read of Buffalo's history, her people were sorely let down by their leaders in the 20th century - but the new crop of emerging leaders gives much reason for optimism, and pride.

Well deserved recognition for some great work by Michael and the others mentioned above. Let's not forget the thousands of other, less ego oriented, volunteers who make great things happen every day. Buffalo has a deep and diverse pool of volunteers from all walks of life working for small and large groups throughout the area. You are correct in saying that these people are making a real name for themselves.

For some reason BRO seems to focus on a few individuals and post about them over and over again. These tend to be the same individuals who are out to make a name for themselves (posted about it here, for example). The question is, why doesn't BRO give time to the other organizations around the area? Maybe focus on some of the faith based groups that are helping to fund mortgages of disabled residents, or the group of volunteers who helps to run the City Mission or Haven House? What about the countless volunteers who staff the phones at Crisis Services? There are thousands of them out there, but most aren't looking for credit or recognition.

This is nothing against Michael Gainer, he is a tremendous person who is doing tremendous things for the area. This is just a general comment for BRO.

Hooooboy looks like the spitemeisters are out today. Praise Gainer & the progressives, get downrated. Complain about their recognition, get more stars than Ebert gave Dr. Zhivago. Is it being snowed in that makes people this crusty?!?! Hey remember that the folks who are getting recognized in this article pay a real cost for being so closely associated with their initiative. They don't just get praised, they also get pestered and sometimes overwhelmed with requests for help and response. They have to be a bit nicer than the rest of us and can't just tell some pest to F off when they're tired or cranky. They may seem to get inordinate credit, but if their endeavor falls flat maybe due to something they can't control or one of their volunteers bad actions they wind up with egg all over their high profile faces AND everyone in town hears about it. So I for one don't begrudge them enjoyment of any moment or moments in the sun!!!! Or in the Times!!

Michael is passionate, dedicated, strategic and driven. He is just the type of socially conscious entrepreneur that Buffalo needs (and which Bufflo homecoming seeks to include, bring back and attract). That he also makes it into the national media to shine a positive, progressive light on Buffalo is a delightful bonus. To have other cites emulate his initiatives is an unbelievable coup for Our Fair City.

This level of recognition has not come without a price. As Brette points out, endeavors like ReUse Buffalo are not smoke and mirrors, but reflect countless hundreds of hours of very hard work and many disappointments. Perserverance pays off.

Yes, there are many others who sacrifice to benefit this community. Let's showcase them ALL, and not begrudge Michael a single moment of well-deserved recognition -- that also benefits Buffalo, BTW.

    Way to go, Michael!!

There are a lot of volunteers but the people that get the attention here, rightfully so, are those that helped to start a movement. They were not just people volunteering for a cause but were actively a part of the causes creation. Does that set them apart from the rest of the people who volunteer? It sure does because when something goes wrong it is their neck or name on the line. It isn't the person that volunteered to help them. Thats extra responsibility and therefore extra acclaim. I don't think I deserve the same attention as the Olmsted Conservancy or ReTree NY just because I help them out and volunteered.

I do agree there are other organizations that should get their fair attention but maybe they are in the works, more difficult to get a hold of. Who knows, but I don't think BRO goes out of its way to promote the same people, it just happens across news releases or events as they come. It shouldn't be their fault some people and groups are more proactive than others.

I like these start-up nonprofit companies that Michael Gainer has created. It's not just about creating jobs in Buffalo, we also help the environment by saving house parts in a demolition. Hopefully the Buffalo News will be kinder to Buffalo ReUse than in Emma Sapong's article was to Buffalo Architectural Salvage Committee. I know these new groups have had similiar problems with insurance, storage and "theft" of abandoned items.

@ Einstein I can't believe you are complaining about BRO not covering other non profits or good causes. HEY, there's NOTHING stopping you from submitting articles or pieces about folks, organizations you find newsworthy that you think BRO or BRM readers might find interesting.

If you took the time to write out a piece about them instead of wasting time whining you'd have raised awareness about the very issues or people you found newsworthy.

" There are a lot of volunteers but the people that get the attention here, rightfully so, are those that helped to start a movement.... It sure does because when something goes wrong it is their neck or name on the line."

This is the same reasoning that allows CEOs to earn multi-million dollar salaries while their employees earn $8.00 an hour.

    Kudos to Michael Gainer!

I don’t get what the big deal is though. Did anyone ever wonder where he got the money to start Buffalo Reuse? He’s just like any other NY State, County, or City worker. WNY has work that needs to get done and the State pays him for it. So recycling is good? Go figure…He's doing good work too, don't get me wrong, but when he started this what did he have to lose?
