Organize A Community Clean Up

Organize A Community Clean Up

Story Options

If you're sick of passing by endless amounts of litter in your neighborhood, then you should consider doing what Scott Dunkle is doing. He's organizing a Community Clean Up for his neighborhood. Scott has targeted the streets of Bryant, Norwood, Summer, Utica, Ashland, Hodge, Elmwood and Richmond for a day of spring cleaning. He's trying to get the word out to business owners and residential neighbors that there is work to be done. He has designated Saturday May 10th (at 9am) as the day to meet at 333 Bryant Street.

This is just one neighborhood that is getting the cleaning treatment. Scott is convinced that there are other motivated neighborhoods and block clubs out there that can do the same. While cruising around the West Side this weekend I was shocked at the number of streets that have trash strewn everywhere. Sometimes it's in front of one house. Other times it's a highly trafficked corner. NFTA bus stops and fast food restaurants are notorious for being highly susceptible to littering.

If you would like top learn more about Scott's efforts, or you would like to join the group that he is organizing, please send him an email.

It's never too late. Good for Scott and his neighborhood. The entire city needs to do this, but it would make such a difference if high profile streets like Elmwood Avenue got cleaned up. Elmwood looked appalling this weekend. Can the EVA send out a friendly email reminder to business owners on Elmwood that they clean up their sidewalks, curbs, and plantings?

I noticed the other day the amount of trash strewn about next to a NFTA bus stop at the corner of Elmwood and Amherst. Why is there not a garbage can by these stops? It should be built into the structure itself!

Though it's true that it's never too late, sooner is definitely better than later. I'm lucky enough to live in a part of the city that's already been cleaned up by my neighbors and me. Good for Scott and others who are organizing to get the job done in parts of the city where this is needed.

I would definitely partake in an Allentown cleanup! Where and when! :) I was thinking about organizing my street but many of the neighbors already did their good deeds and cleaned up most of it. Allen East is still a disaster though...

stephenJames - I hammered the NFTA and the city with many complaints / requests over the years for: 1.)trash receptacles at every bus stop and 2.)scheduled cleaning of the shelters. Basically each useless entity told me the other useless entity is responsible so I am not optimistic this will ever get the attention it needs. On another note: did anyone else notice the mess the sanitation dept makes of Elmwood every Friday? It seems that every house/business has a small pile of trash in the street that falls from the big blue bins when they are being dumped into the trucks. I send a lot of email to the mayor complaint line on this as well but nothing changes. I don't know why the cops don't ticket people for littering there is a mint to be made off of these degenerates.

JimF, I have had similar experiences/problems with that Mayor's Complaint Line, or the so-called "Mayor's Call and Resolution Center" available for on-line complaints. I noticed several blocks downtown on my daily walks from the Metrorail station out to my place of work where the snow would pile up on the sidewalk in front of businesses, forcing people to walk in the street. The sidewalks would often remain impassable for days at a time, or maybe a week or so. Whenever I would complain about this by filing a complaint online, the department in charge of responding would wait about two weeks, until the snow melted on its own, and then they'd close the complaint with a response that would say something like, "Inspector went past the property mentioned in this complaint and noted no problems." It was like they would wait until they were sure that a path would be worn through the snow piles or it was melted on its own, and then they would address the problem. Pretty useless system in my experience.

Yay for Scott!!!!!!!!!Now schedule something in the Kleinhans area so we can get this side of Richmond cleaned up. I pickup in front of my house everyday and yell at the low lifes I see dropping the trash but it is an uphill battle. Some of these people have a hard time accepting the fact that their "hood" is changing and they better clean up or get out. We all need to roll up our sleeves and clean up our city. Because unfortunately, City Hall will not do it for us.

Hey, walking around on Sunday I saw a great place for a cleanup! It's Lameo's, sorry I mean Pano's piece of sht lot where a decent house once stood. It's nice that that loser's expansion is really clipping along.

Elmwood is having a cleanup, hosted by the Elmwood Village Association:

"Spring Cleanup in the Elmwood Village! Spring has sprung and that means its time to give Elmwood Avenue a clean sweep! Please join your neighbors on Saturday, April 19th for the Elmwood Village Association's Annual Spring Cleanup. We’ll meet at 10:00am at the Elmwood Village Association office located at 890 Elmwood Avenue and proceed to pick up litter, sweep sidewalks and rake tree beds in small groups from Forest Avenue to Allentown. We'll provide garbage bags and plastic gloves to volunteers. We ask that you please bring your own broom or rake to this event. This is a fun and simple way to give back to your community and enjoy the wonderful spring weather. If you’re planning on attending please contact Elmwood Village Executive Director, Justin Azzarella, at justin@elmwoodvillage.org to rsvp or for additional information."

Congrats to Scott and a big thank you. I so appreciate people that see something that has to be done and mobilize to do it. Beats calling complaint lines and commenting on blogs, which don't accomplish much.
