Now that spring is here, it may be a good time to send a special friend a Buffalo gift basket. I'm always looking for interesting Buffalo gifts to send to friends, so it was fortunate that I ran into Quaker Bonnet Eatery owner, Liz Kolken, who was busy wrapping a gift basket to send out of town. Liz told me that the combo gift baskets are very popular with Buffalo ex-pats who are constantly searching out Buffalo-related products. "All of the baskets are different," Liz told me. "We have books and CDs, and food. We send stuff all over the world. Anyone who wants something custom packed... give us a budget and tell us what you want. We have Allentown authors, the Junior League Cookbook, the Garden Walk Book and the Buffalo Architecture book. We work with MadeinBuffalo.com... they do a bunch of baskets for us. Because we have a website people email us from everywhere. We have a Buffalonian who is in Antarctica doing Naval research. She orders the Buffalo Chips (coconut macaroons dipped in Chocolate). They're better-than-sex chewy cookies. We're not a traditional basket company so we have good value and no crappy items. We make between 500 and 1000 pounds of Buffalo Chips every week. That's all we do every Monday."

Quaker Bonnet Eatery is located at 175 Allen Street in Buffalo. 716.884-0438

Liz is great....it's wonderful to see an article supporting her place. The Buffalo Nickels are out of this world, and quite addicting. Another great treat is having lunch at her place....the food is always fresh, good & homemade. Every soup I've tried there is fantastic, and the english muffins you can buy frozen are the best I've had. I enjoy bringing them home for a week-end breakfast sandwich of fresh eggs from my dad, Spar's bacon, and some Yancy's Fancy horseradish cheddar...truly a local breakfast of champions!

I took a small group to her place a few years back after a walking tour. She did an awesome family style spread for 12 people. Deserts rocked also (ummm - pecan pie).

Hooray for Liz. Not only is the food great at Quaker Bonnet, but the sidewalk and surrounding area is always kept clean due to her efforts. ALL businesses on Allen Street could use to follow this example. We haven't treid the Buffalo chips yet, but it won't be long now . . . I'd say "Liz for Mayor," except I know she doesn't have the time.
