Non-Profit Completes Sattler Theater Purchase

Story Options

Restoration of the Beaux Arts glazed terra cotta Sattler Theater at 512-16 Broadway has taken a step forward. Western New York Minority Media Professionals Inc. purchased the vacant landmark on Tuesday from Mt. Sinai, God's Holy Temple for $18,000. The non-profit group intends to renovate the ornate building for use as its headquarters and a performing arts center.

"After much back and forth with the owners, we finally closed and took if off the City's demolition list," said Mike Quinniey of WNY Minority Media Professionals.

The group is working with theater restoration architect Craig Morrison, AIA on renovation plans. New York City-based Morrison is an architect, historian and author of Theatres, a Library of Congress book about theatres in America since the country’s founding.

According to Quinniey, what started off as a planned $1.8 million project is likely to exceed $4 million when work is completed. Though an exisiting conditions study showed the building is structurally sound, plans now include removing the rear wall of the building to install a state-of-the-art stage.

A steering committee has been formed to help guide the project and raise necessary funding. The Committee to Support the Sattler Theater Restoration is being chaired by 90-year old Violet Hill who attended shows in the theater in the 1920's and 30's.

Fundraising is expected to begin shortly along with asbestos abatement work.

Theater history from the Buffalo as an Architectural Museum website:

Another eye-catcher on the East Side is the striking terra-cotta frontage at 516 Broadway, near Jefferson. The architect, once again, was Henry L. Spann, probably in collaboration with his much-younger brother William T. Spann. John G. Sattler commissioned it. Yes, the same Sattler who was a local real-estate tycoon and the same Sattler who owned the late department store.

This 928-seat, $35,000 "fireproof" structure was built in 1914, on the site of the old wood-frame Casino Theatre. As far as I know, there was no stage, only a movie screen. In 1919 or 1920 the theatre changed hands, and it was renamed the Broadway. In 1922 the new management installed a Marr & Colton 2-manual organ. Later still the Basil brothers took over and renamed it Basil's Broadway. In recent years it was used as a church (Joy Temple). Buffalo's Forgotten Theaters: A few notes by Ranjit Sandhu, July 2002.

In 1995, Tyrone Christopher, Tony Jones, and Quinniey established Western New York Minority Media Professionals, a non-profit, professional media organization committed to promoting social and educational opportunities within the Western New York community.

This is going to quite the building to show off when completed. They are one lucky group to have it. I wish them all the luck in the world.

    The alternative was DEMOLITION.

How few people read that this building was on the citys demolition list.

Its shocking this building like so many churchs are anchors to the community. These buildings act as magnets encouraging new development to surround it.

When completed I can easily see a developer wanting an 2-3 story office building adjacent to it. Dont' forget that the huge acreage of Buffalo Forge is only a short distance away....so its buildings like this which could set the stage so to speak for the redevelopment of the areas surrounding it. A successful redevelopment here will encourage the perception of more successful redevelopment.

Plus its more evidence that traffic needs to be encouraged off Kensington and I-190 and onto corridors such as Genessee and Broadway.

They're planning on not only showing movies, but having live theater and music events as well! This is going to be an exciting addition to our local entertainment scene.

The "Sheldon Show" is in the collection of long-gone theaters! Our mom and aunt took us little kids there. I clearly remember the tiny interior and a Halloween costume party--mom made costumes, me, Little BoPeep, my brother and girl cousin were sheep. My brother hated that! We won 1st prize. I sort of remember the proprietor, Mr. Sheldon?

The lot is a pile of rocks now. Geist's Hardware building is still standing. The present "dirty book store" used to be a "5 & 10"--can't remember the owner's name.

The building to the right of the theater was a barbershop (my dad and brothers went to), whose owner, a distinguished old man was the barber. He lived in the country and owned a horse, but he stayed in a back room behind a curtain while the shop was open. I went there with my dad and brothers--very family oriented neighborhood in thos days. (Later, I took my youngest brother there. All that time I wanted to see behind that curtain! That was a no no. (Imagine a curtain stopping a kid today.) Then, one day, I asked if I could take a peep......

Rozek's Pharmacy stood where BarryMoore's is now. Burnham's Furniture was at the corner of Walden and Burgard. We were the first family on our block to have a TV from there because Burnham's had a "big sale" on them. My dad turned the sale price tag over. The original price was lower than the sale price! My Dad got that TV for a REAL sale price cause he was LOUD about the switcheroo! That was my first introduction to "switcheroo" and my Dad saying that old man Burnham was a "scheister" too!

Looks like a real mess, the Allendale renovation was in excess of $4,000,000, and that was before the State was in such a financial mess and the City had a control board. But I guess people can dream, huh?
