Neighborhood Collective Open To Ideas

One of the city's most interesting collectives is preparing to go through a pretty big change-up. A number of longtime tenants are branching out in new directions, which means that there are some incredible opportunities to bring in some interesting businesses to the Elmwood Village. Before we get to who might be interested in the space/s, we must first look at who's leaving. Tru-Teas Café is on the hunt for a larger location and will be leaving the front building. Then, the Science Museum's Science Spot (back building) is heading off to join up with myriad Public Library branches - the program is going to be called, 'Branching Out'. Finally, Bryant Street Galleries (back building) is going to be working in conjunction with the Burchfield-Penney Art Center.
What does all of this mean? According to Annie Adams, Director of the Neighborhood Collective, the freed-up square footage will allow potential businesses to step into spaces ranging from 850 sq.' to over 4000 sq.'. Annie is willing to reconfigure the existing layout/s in both front and back buildings. The driveway is currently being used as a patio for events and marketing functions. Opportunities include a café experience, retail, gallery or fully operational restaurant. The proximity to the Lexington Co-op (across the street) makes the collective appealing to businesses looking to capitalize from a nearby healthy clientele.
For further information on potential operations within the Neighborhood Collective, 810 Elmwood Avenue, contact Annie at 716-887-2929.

This past week, I sang at Lafayette Avenue Presbyterian Church, located at the corner of Elmwood and Lafayette, as part of the Elmwood Village Association's holiday tree lighting ceremony. It was the first time I ever sang my very personal song, “Who Wants To Cry At Christmas,” in front of the public. There were about 80 people gathered to hear me and my piano-playing friend Johnny Juarez present our “Chri …
As the global financial crisis throws economies around the world into recession, more and more industries are getting hit. Banks have been bailed out. Auto manufacturers are drowning. Newspapers, though, were ahead of their time as they've been dying slowly for more than a decade.
Warren Buffett, the legendary investor and owner of our hometown Buffalo News, acknowledged the fate of newspapers in his 2006 shareholder letter when he wrote:
Nevertheless, this operation faces …
As you look outside your office window today, you're likely overtaken by the sheer beauty. Blowing snow. People hunched over, freezing, trying to walk into a 30MPH wind. You're probably reading from the script of American Beauty:
Sometimes there's so much beauty in the world I feel like I can't take it... and my heart is going to cave in.
Or, maybe you're just thinking "Oh f#@!, I have to drive home in this s*$#."
Either way, we're here to lift your spirits.

A two-story Delaware Avenue office building is getting a new face and a third story. The Buffalo Planning Board approved renovation plans for 334 Delaware Avenue at this morning's meeting. Owner 120 W. Tupper Street Inc. is undertaking the $1.2 million project. The bland building will get a new look and a glass third-floor addition.

Anyone notice something missing? YUP, nice large canopy trees lining the street
Anyone notice anything else? YUP, these buildings dont look maintained. Forget about upscale...these buildings are so far downscale that they still look like their barely saving their mortgage from small businesses catering to empty pocket college kids.
Elmwood has changed but its buildings certainly havent!
When is Forever Elmwood going to bring Elmwood into something more upscale (attractive) or atleast maintained, pedestrian friendly and integrated. Its a hodge podge.
These businesses are moving out...but the visual seediness of Elmwood underlies a dirty secret that Main, Linwood, Delaware, Elmwood, Richmond have all been doing better in the last 10-20 years but it really isnt reflected in the most visible presentation of the community: The Elmwood Strip.
Worse....Main, Delaware and Grant just dont seem to be benefiting from a vibrant Elmwood. The growth of the area should have made Elmwood a centerpiece but it just hasnt happened that I can see.
Its such a shame really that Elmwood is still in the category of having potential.

I respectfully disagree. Think about this same block 10 years ago. What is now the Lexington Co-op was a closed Wlilis and Lowe (sp?) store that was set back with a large parking lot. The two houses at the corner of Elmwood and Auburn were in terrible shape - they are now completely renovated with several apartments and storefronts. Go one block south to where Globe Market is. That area used to be a haven for derelicts. I could keep going.
It's so easy to forget about the progress that has taken place along this strip. And you also forget that the Elmwood Village Association is a not-for-profit organization. I think they've done a crazy amount of good for the EV. It just doesn't happen over night.

That said, buffaloweiner, I'm going to guess that you haven't been in either of the Neighborhood Collective buildings, as Annie Adams has done a beautiful job fixing up both spaces.

brando i completely agree with you. those blocks are looking so much better than in years past. buffaloweiner clearly has not been in the collective because it is quite impressive both inside and out.
i do worry about the businesses in those couple of blocks being rather boutique heavy, however. it would be nice to see a couple of more practical business pop up around there. mind you i am very happy that boutiques like shoefly and presence seem to be doing well, i just think some balance would strengthen the block as far as longevity is concerned.

buffalowhiner do you really miss the decrepit halfway house that once existed on that corner? I know, it's fun to get a rise out of people though.

you mis-understand me....to a significant degree. I have been on Elmwood and rather often...so Im not talking about this store or that store...because there have been improvements.
However, I am talking about the Elmwood strip which most people define from Allen to Forest.
Yes there have been improvements but driving down this stretch of Elmwood its just sad to still be able to point out properties that have ugly, outdated, unmaintained frontage and Im not even mentioning the sides and rear of many of these buildings that many business owners feel...well if no one can see it...why spend the money on it.
Im not saying there havent been improvements...Im just saying that there are still large stretches of Elmwood and even in the good sections there seems to be one property owner that just brings everything else down.
Yes there have been improvements....but...there is a big difference between the homeowner that mows the lawn every month and the one that fertilizes and plants flowers. Elmwood has alot of first...and not enough of the second.

I don't think anyone misunderstands you Weiner - You clearly don't remember the street even 5 years ago, let alone 10 years ago. The street looks 10000 x better than it did. It looks better this year than just last year. Why don't you give the Elmwood Village Assoc. a call if you have such a problem with what they do?
And to comment about it in this point - The Neighborhood Collective buildings are absolutely fantastic space. Thats what this post is about. If thats not what your comment is about, then why are you making it?

ok, Im speaking generally from Allen to Forest...but even if you want to focus on this building...look at the gutters, their not clean...look at the siding...its out of date, its not in good shape, it needs to be replaced, and the front of the building...what the heck is that about...look at the color for another....and the attic windows and the side windows...its a shame that a business can do this to the front of a building and then ignore the other 3 sides
this neglect is all over Elmwood and not just Elmwood but Hertel also.
so obviously I have a different take and I will leave it at that....

Sorry....back on track to the topic at hand...I love the crafy/tea shop mix that Tru Teas has....it would be wonderful if something like that could continue at the front of the building. I think hands on creative venues in the back would be a great continuation of what is already happening....

Well said everyone, except BuffWeiner who sounds like a fairly typical BRO poster who can't seem to find the positive in anything.
The Elmwood strip has improved immensely, and if the only thing we can find to bitch about is some dirty gutters, then I think we are doing pretty well. Of course there are a buildings that still need improvement....and of course there are some vacant storefronts, but I would say that overall, things have never been better. Thank you to anyone and everyone who has had a positive effect on Elmwood or the city in general.
Go BIlls!

Buffalo Weiner, enough said, typical downtrodden Buffalonians will downplay anything good that we have to offer. The first one that probably celebrated when a Shooters restaurant could not make it here in Buffalo, and will no doubt show off his vacation pics of Darien Lake and think that he left the state. I am fortunate to travel for my company 2-3 times a month to major cities in the US, and when I fly home and look for my connecting gate, I do not look for the gate, I start following the matching Tops or Walmart bags, that Buffalo weiner would no doubt consider matching luggage and the all too many Buffalo Bills Sweat shirts and Zubas pants. I am a minority in my 7 jeans and I love it!!!! I welcome a hot new place to shop, and by the way my husband referred me to this article, so that is confirmation enough for me, he likes my look tooo....
