Neglia Ballet: Wordless Poetry

Story Options

Husband and wife team Sergio Neglia and Heidi Halt have a vision, and they believe Buffalo is the place to carry out this vision. In 1994 they opened the Neglia Conservatory of Ballet, a school with the objective to train, nurture and create dancers for a company. Sergio comes from Argentina and brings with him his cultural influence and extensive professional international career. Heidi is a native of Buffalo and has trained and danced ballet and modern dance professionally throughout the country. Together, the team is able to give students diverse, cultural and professional well-rounded training.

"Forty years ago Buffalo was a well-established dance capitol. Famous dancers came. I want to bring that back," says Sergio. Part of his vision is to have an international collaboration with dancers. Sergio has been performing in Japan and with his strong connections can bring global diversity to Buffalo.

Sergio and Heidi work hard and they've been successful. In 1999 they formed a performance company, Neglia Ballet Artists and since have built a repertoire of performances which include: Baba Yaga, Romeo and Juliet, Spartacus, the second act of Giselle, Don Quixote, excepts from Carmen, and mixed repertory works featuring Heidi and Segio's original choreography.

Neglia Ballet is located at 1685 Elmwood Avenue. 716.447.0401. www.negliaballet.org Excerpt from Buffalo Rising Magazine writer, Angela Hastings. Photo by Jim Bush.
