National Day of Climate Action

National Day of Climate Action

Story Options

Did you hear that the temperature is supposed to climb to eighty degrees today? Yesterday at the Chicago Marathon 250 people were treated for heat-related ailments and they had to stop the race at 11:30am due to the high heat index. Some may joke that is a good thing for Buffalo... that summer sailing is the latest trend for fall, but if you're concerned about the wellbeing of our planet earth, you may want to consider showing your support for it. This past April, concerned Buffalonians gathered on the steps near Hoyt Lake to Step It Up! for the planet - and they learned how to help slow Global Warming. This fall, November 3rd is National Day of Climate Action, and it's your first chance to follow in the footsteps of Step It Up!

This fall families and friends will once again come together to Step It Up! at the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural Site (641 Delaware Avenue). From there supporters will march, with signs in hand, to the President McKinley Monument. Get your school involved - tell your parents about it - let your co-workers know what's going on. If you want to help share the news, here's a link to download a printable flyer. And if you're looking for more info, click here for maps, RSVP, and political invites.

And for heaven's sake, walk, bike, or take public transit to get there. Driving to a climate change rally is like bringing a six pack to an AA meeting.

This is ridiculous. The reason why the temperature today is 80 degrees and it's been warm for the last two weeks is because we are having a HEAT WAVE that moved in from the south, not global warming!!

Similarly, when it was ridiculously cold last February, it was because a COLD FRONT moved down from Canada, not because it disproved global warming!!

Global warming is a process in which the average world temperature will increase slowly and gradually over the coming decades. Today's weather does not validate the theory. Get educated, people!

And meanwhile, enjoy the balmy weather and enjoy that you do not have to heat your house. The world is not coming to and end. And sadly, the temperatures next week should be below normal (cold front moving in from Canada).

Global warming causes the overall energy of the atmosphere to increase. There has been a definite increase in the number of heat waves and overall temperature. You can't pin down one hot day or another on global warming, but the overall trend is from global warming. Incidentally the October blizzard has to do with global warming too. More energy in the atmosphere means these cold air masses get shoved harder, so to speak, making storms like that more possible. Think of those huge blizzards... 2000, 2001,...2006.... they're happening more now than before. Even though it's getting warmer on average...

Global circulation patterns have an immediate effect on our weather, last February was the waning stages of a mild-to-weak El Nino which statistically has caused very cold January-February-March temperatures in Buffalo. It is only one of many, many factors which influence climate. Lake Erie has a tremendous localized and immediate effect on Buffalo weather. As we near the 1st anniversary of the October 12-13 2006 storm it is interesting to note that one year ago this week the water temperature was 62 degrees- very warm for this late in the season. Warmer water in lake Erie, just like warmer SST's (Sea Surface Temperatures)=more moisture evaporation and heavier precipitation, in this case it fell as snow. I just checked and the current Erie water temp is 67 degrees! Is this due to Global Warming? Perhaps, but it is only one variable of many when looking at climate, and it should be considered as a weather influence.

Well, unless we can convince China to stop burning cheap coal to power their move up the prosperity ladder, what we do here might not make a huge difference. Barring any last minute breakthrough in carbon reabsorbtion and sequestration, we are going to have to live with this phenomenon. Bike and walk because it makes you feel better and it's great for your health. But know that the road to a post-carbon society will be paved with a lot of unanswered prayers.

Global Warming is the world's answer to the end of the Cold War, the demise of the Soviet Union, and the massive relief efforts for World Hunger. We have to align our resources and anger against something, it might as well be against cars and burning fossil fuels. What better way to get back at the middle east!

The world is facing an undeniable and irreversible shortage of oil and natural gas. The world is also facing a shortage of fresh water and electricity, the latter due to the loss of fossil fuels, natural gas, and the aging nuclear generating facilities. Buffalo is in a somewhat unique position to capitalize on this, we are perched on the greatest source of natural wind and hydro energy, we own the water rights to one of the greatest fresh water reserves in the world. It is too bad that we gave all rights to it away to the State of NY to power and fuel downstate and out of state interests.

We pay more for electricity and water in Buffalo than most other cities in the country. Albany and NYC are profiting from us while they laugh at us for our economic blight. It is time that we stopped acting like a desperate slut and start taking pride in ourselves. We are better than this, but unfortunately our parents and their parents didn't have enough pride in themselves to secure our future. We are constantly taking the humiliation and degradation from Albany without ever standing up for ourselves. It is about time that we took control of our natural resources and prove that Buffalo is the most Earth Friendly, carbon free, renewable energy savvy city in the world!

Well Rising you have a point China is fast approaching and will probably surpass the US in green house gas emissions.. but at the same time they are actually testing the grounds and implements sustainable technologies on a scale that puts us to shame. They are currently in the process of buildings a settlement for 40k people initially to grow to 500k people. It will create its own energy, grow its own food, and be THE most sustainable city on the planet. Dongtan City

So while you say that walking and biking wont have any real impact it sounds like a giant scapegoat; we should just live with the consequences cause we are not the wost player is foolhardy at best. In the end if we don't push for a change towards a sustainable lifestyle we wont be able to support ourselves anymore. We will constantly be grabbing and fighting for resources to plunder. And he world isn't going to accept that forever. They don't accept that now.

We should want sustainability because it means we grow our own food, afford our own health care, power our homes and employ our own people all without sacrificing the ability for our children to do the same. If we want them to have the quality of life that we have enjoyed then we need to embrace green. There is no other way, and who doesn't want their kids to have forests to explore and clean air to breathe.

Believe me, sbrof, if I had it in my power to snap my fingers and restore the Earth to where it was around 1600, I would. You're right that we in the U.S. can make a big difference by erasing our carbon footprints, so to speak, and live sustainably. But remember that in the atmosphere, there is already so much co2 that anything we do now slows the growth of global warming, not reverses it. This isn't an excuse to get piggy and behave like a horde of little Dick Cheneys. all I'm saying is that our expectations will be exceeding the facts on the ground here. As to China, they may have a nice little Potemkin Village of "Green" this and "Sustainable" that, but I won't be impressed until the big cities, Shanghai, Beijing,Shenzhen, Wuhan, Xian,Nanjing, Chendu, et al., are truly green. One note, however; China may be limiting the use of cars due to the high cost of fuel...as well as to put on The Big Fake for the Olympics.

Great testament to Global Warming, all the people in the picture are wearing fleece jackets and sweatshirts in October. :-)

There's no reason to think that picture was taken in October. Actually the leaves are still off the trees there, it may have been taken in April at that Hoyt Lake event. Anyhow, I think the more organized people get over this, the more likely something will be done. It may be a lost cause to get the CO2 level in the atmosphere to level off immediately, but conceivably a global effort over time might slow global warming down to a point where say 50 years from now something could be done about it before it becomes too late. I don't see why one should give up on this just because it seems too hard, it's better to try than to just sit there and let it happen.

Well, I guess since China is no better than us when it comes to pollution, we the jolly, innocent, morally superior American public should just go on our daily business burning fossil fuels in our oversized SUVs for our oversized asses like there is no tomorrow. Those who say we need to explore alternative ways of going about our daily bidness are just pinko liberal eviro-pansies who hate America anyway. Yoo-ess-ay!

Denizen, there are two ways the US could really do its part to end global warming: 1) Replace fossil fuel power plants with nuclear power plants (wind power is a cute pipe dream). Works in France. 2) Tax SUV's at a level where nobody will buy them.

But #1 will not happen because the environmental whackos won't allow it. And #2 will not happen because it will put GM, Ford and Chrysler out of business.

So it has nothing to do with enviro-pansies, it has to do with reality. Yes, walk and bike to work, turn your thermostat down, build a "green" building, and buy a small car. But in terms of global warming, in the grand scheme of things these actions are 100% meaningless.

No, what will happen is that we will begin trading co2 credits globally. Because America is wealthier than thedeveloping countries, we'll simply buy any credits they have so we can offset the continuation of our carbon-lovin' lifestyle by essentially forcing developing economies to do the heavy lifting on lowering carbon emissions. That's how we've been doing business in a lot of areas over the last few years. Countries that are cash-starved know they can earn hard currency by greening up their societies and selling credits to us, we in turn throw China and everybody else under the bus while we toodle along in our Hummers. Game over, we win again. "Yoo-ess-ay!" indeed.
