Sometimes it's easy to take things for granted, especially when it comes to a casual restaurant that meets your most basic needs with such ease that it can almost go unnoticed. I know that Mythos on Elmwood is one of Queenseye's favorite joints and it's one of mine as well, we've even run into each other there a few times. What began as a small Greek diner many years ago has evolved into a large, modern restaurant serving a good variety of foods to a packed house, day in and day out.

I like to stop at Mythos for a quick breakfast and a little reading time on cool, sunny mornings. I also meet people here at lunch time to discuss BR-related business and I gladly bring my young family here for dinner at night. Mythos is the kind of place that easily fits the needs of its varied clientèle. Its decor is casual, and its large front windows, partially elevated dining area, well-configured seating plan and clean, simple color palette make it comfortable.

Breakfast covers all the basics, I like to keep it simple and am a fan of eggs over-medium and tasty home fries, but their omelettes are really good, especially the one filled with chicken souvlaki. If you like the sweet stuff, Belgian waffles, French toast and an assortment of pancakes are available. You can also order a simple egg sandwich to go. Breakfast is available all day and runs from about $4.50 for the basics to around $6.99 for an omelette with home fries and toast.

The bulk of the menu includes sandwiches, burgers, melts and wraps. They offer veggie burgers and turkey burgers along with the more traditional offering of burgers with various toppings, all of which come with fries ($5.99-$7.35). The melts include a Reuben and a take on the popular Greek gyro as well as chicken souvlaki ($7.50 - $8.99). Wraps run the gamut, my favorites include the simple smoked turkey wrap which incorporates turkey, swiss, lettuce, tomato, bacon and honey mustard sauce in a flour wrap ($7.50), and the grilled vegetable wrap stuffed with veggies, greens, Gorgonzola and balsamic dressing ($7.50). BLT's, clubs, souvlakis made of lamb, beef and chicken, gyros, steak and chicken sandwiches are also featured ($3.99 - $7.99), most of which come with fries.

Now there are two things about Mythos in addition to its decor that really differentiate it from most of its competition. The first is its use of really fresh vegetables, the second is its dinner menu. The first example is evidenced by its salads, always huge and always delicious. Though they offer a chef, Greek, Caesar and julienne salad, I would strongly urge you to try the Portobello and Goat Cheese Salad which is composed of greens, delicious slices of grilled portobello, fresh roasted red peppers, dried cranberries and goat cheese. At only $8.99 it's a great deal and for an additional $2 you can have chicken added to make it an even more satisfying meal.

The dinner menu does a good job of appealing to many, not only those with a hankering for a good souvlaki or a slice of spanakopita. Mythos serves classic diner food such as liver and onions, meat loaf, pork chops and a Friday fish fry, but they also serve steak, braised lamb shanks, haddock with spinach, tomato and parmesan, and a char-grilled chicken breast with a bruschetta-style topping ($8.99 - $17.99). All of these entrees include your choice of potato, vegetable and soup or salad. Again, everything is fresh, generally well-executed and far more flavorful than the cafeteria-style chow served by most of Mythos' peers.

Pasta served with a side salad is also a popular choice, there's shrimp scampi, penne with herbs, chicken and broccoli, fettucini Alfredo and Mythos' specialty which is made of bow-tie pasta, spinach tomatoes herbs and feta ($8.99-$12.99).

There are of course dinner specials every night, brunch is well worth your while, and the addition of a small beer and wine selection only adds to the appeal of this Elmwood favorite.

Mythos is especially nice for families, with a simple kids menu, crayons and coloring books, and most importantly, kind and patient servers (make sure to tip them well!).

So the next time you and your friends can't come to an easy decision about where to grab a bite, or if you're looking for a place to grab a meal and peruse the paper, remember Mythos. There's something here for everyone, and it's all done well.

I think the food overall is pretty good at Mythos, however, I had Spinach Florentine for brunch there not too long ago. The spinach was most definitely not fresh and the hollandaise was like glue. On the other hand, I've also had the lamb souvlaki, not expecting much, and it is really superb. The lamb was fresh and tasty and well-cooked and since lamb can be such a gamble, I was impressed.

Mythos... what a great and pleastenful environment. I am a regular guest to Mythos. Let me say, " The Breakfast is the best!" I always go for casual meetings in the evenings. Night and day, the food and service is excellent. It is always a great clean community to dine. The Lamb is sensational, cooked just right, always good and compliments a Mythos beer or nice glass of house wine.

After Solid Grounds closed, I really didn't know where I was going to find breakfast food that was fresh and different. I mean, I love eggs and sausage at a diner but not every weekend. We tried Bettys but the last thing you want to do on a Sunday morning with a grumbling stomach and a need for coffee is to wait an hour for a table while watching others eat. My friends and I went to Mythos and it is the new staple. The atmosphere is really great, and I always see people I know. The first time I went, I ordered pancakes with berries and was a little dissappointed that they were frozen (being peak berry season) but that is truly my only complaint. The specials are delicious and the service is casual and prompt even when the place is hoppin.
