As some may know, the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society’s museum building was the NYS pavilion during the Pan-American Exposition. Sitting in the exact same place as it always has in the museum building is the Steinway & Sons grand piano, custom-built 107 years ago for the exposition. Stephen Baker, the BPO’s Associate Executive Director, will bring the grand piano to life at “Music for a Sunday Afternoon” on Sunday, July 6.

Baker comes from California and has had a lifelong career of playing the piano. He won the Young Artist Competition for piano in Los Angeles and went on to receive his bachelor’s degree in piano performance from the Mannes College of Music in NYC, where he studied with Nina Svetlanova. He has performed with Academy Award-winners John Williams and Elmer Bernstein and played as a studio musician at Universal Studios. He has been an administrative leader for more than twenty years and has worked at Carnegie Hall, the Minnesota Orchestra, and the Houston Symphony before joining the BPO.

Now you can hear Baker present his fourth installment of this relaxed program. His themed series runs on selected Sundays through November. The theme on July 6 is “Music of the Pan-American Expo and Rags.” Baker will be playing selections from Victor Herbert and Scott Joplin, tunes written for the Pan-American Exposition, and patriotic favorites like “You’re A Grand Old Flag,” “God Bless America,” and “The Battle Hymn of the Republic.”

The series has two other dates. October 5 the theme is “The Great Songwriters” and November 2 the theme is “Broadway and Music of the Pan-American Expo.” The cost of hearing Baker’s series is just the regular museum admission price: $6 for adults, $4 for seniors and students ages 13 to 21, and $2.50 for children ages 7 to 12. As an added bonus for this particular theme, in honor of Independence Day weekend, the Historical Society is offering free admission to any US military veteran and a guest.

The program runs from 1:30 PM till 3 PM at the Historical Society’s museum building at 25 Nottingham Court at Elmwood Avenue.

When does this institution plan to announce its Strategic Plan? I've heard this mentioned for some time and their website refers to it, but there is no other information. Buffalonians are sorely lacking in their knowledge of western New York and BECHS must share in the responsibility. They've had the same tired exhibits in the basement for decades. I would be very interested to see their yearly attendance figures.

The exhibit "Made/Invented in Buffalo" and the exhibit "Transportation in Buffalo" will be part of the Great Lakes Museum partnered with Bass Pro.

The Historical Society archives for Grover Cleveland and Millard Fillmore will be part of the Millard Fillmore Presidential Library and the Grover Cleveland Presidential Library possible anchoring the redevelopment of the Richardson.

Unfortunately no funds for any restoration of Pan Am projects like statues, fountains or gateway arches but who knows maybe in the future.

but...BECHS doesNOT have many resources so they cant do very much but the fact that they are so heavily involved in the planning for significant expansions to our history via additional museums .... says that just because you dont see it...they are accomplishing quite a bit.

my biggest suggestion is for the zoo and botanical gardens to get involved with the Bass Pro Great Lakes Museum and kind of do a Flora and Fauna exhibit of great lakes ecology which would provide an interest for downtown visitors to head to north buffalo and south buffalo respectively.

Hey...BuffaloRising....thats an idea for you....why not do a story on the Great Lakes Museum and interview the zoo and botanical gardens on an ecological exhibit.

Buffaloweiner, BECHS has stated previously on BuffaloRising that they are not involved with any of the other museum endeavors. If you have information that confirms your points, I'd be eager to see it for clarification.

I'm simply looking for their strategic plan so I can get an understanding of what they want to do in the future. If the community understands their mission statement, then they can rally behind it. The institution has a huge collection, yet very little is on display.

I hope their plan includes a name change because the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society moniker is antiquated. They boldly need to dust off their image in order to get crowds to visit the place.

Buffaloweiner, while your ideas are interesting, at this time, the Historical Society does not plan to move any of its major exhibits or archives collections to other locations.

PaulBuffalo, a new strategic plan will soon be released, which will carry the museum through 2012 – the year of the 1812 bicentennial and the 150 year anniversary of BECHS.

Attendance has been rising steadily at the History Museum over the last two years – it went from 49,000 in 2006 to 72,000 in 2007. This year is on pace to be 28% higher.
