Mural, mural on the wall...

After posting an inquiry for ideas regarding possible mural projects in Buffalo, I was contacted by an artist by the name of Jeffrey VIncent (photo with his works of art):
J. Vincent: I love the idea of doing mural work for the beautification of Buffalo, I think it’s a great idea. I am a local artist with a BFA from the Cleveland Institute Of Art and I work in many mediums and styles. I've participated in the M.I.A. live painting demonstrations ('03-'06 ) and Rockin' @ the Knox projects, and have made some indoor murals for private clients.
Jeffrey forwarded some works from his portfolio after corresponding about the coming of winter and the window that would allow for any murals to be completed this year. It was decided that a series of fundraisers would be in order before any of the actual work was to commence. Earlier this evening we met up and hatched a plan to hopefully bring the mural project to fruition. Notes from the meeting included: The use of 'mis-tints' paints to keep the cost of the paints down, researching matching grant programs, securing scaffolding, identifying insurance risks, contacting muralists, scouting out suitable walls (both inside for winter and outside for summer), and allocating funds for continued maintenance (touch-ups).
The original post was also answered by Karen Powell, owner of The Elmwood Village Inn, who expressed an interest in hosting a fundraiser. Of course we were happy to accept her most gracious offer, which left us with the question of identifying walls around the city that are appropriate for the works of art. We are in search of building owners that would be willing to allow a mural to be painted on an exterior or interior wall. The condition for the interior would be a heavy traffic area, while we would be less concerned about traffic for an exterior if the wall met with other conditions. Sometimes an obscure wall can stand out in a bit more of an obscure area.
In the meantime, Jeffrey and I will be setting out Monday morning in search of good homes for the murals. We are also open to hearing from other muralists in the area who would be willing to participate in the project. If you have an interest, please contact the mural committee.

As we mentioned in our previous post, we’re in the process of changing the Buffalo Rising site. We’re almost there as we expect to launch the new site on Friday, December 19th.
In the meantime, posting will be light as we log new stories in the new publishing system which will only be viewable when we launch on Friday.
As always, we appreciate our users’ patience as we make this transition but we promise it will be well worth it. With faster load times, a comment view …
Caroline Kennedy was in town for a visit with our mayor yesterday. A possible choice to succeed US Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, Kennedy's name has been mentioned along with that of Attorney General Andrew Cuomo (son of former New York Governor Mario Cuomo) and our own Byron Brown, among others.
Certainly, Kennedy has "been around politics" all of her life, which is to say she was born into a family of politicos and lived in the White House--neither of which would necessarily f …
Free light rail rides on downtown's above ground section could be derailed thanks to the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority's budget mess. That is the news coming out of a Buffalo Place meeting this morning. Facing a budget shortfall and reduced State operating assistance, the NFTA is scrambling for new revenue sources and is contemplating charging for rides along the lengthy downtown pedestrian mall.
Well it is Christmas time in the city and the NFTA helped put people and especially children into the mood in a very festive and fun way. One of my favorite memories of childhood was taking the train downtown with my grandfather. I would gaze out the windows and watch the tunnel speed by. It always felt like we were going a million miles an hour.
Then there was the ability to stand up and walk around during the ride without the need to be strapped down. It was always a fun time …

Hooray for Jeff! A great idea for a great artist. He recently designed the cover of L.A. Howe's book of poems NTR PIC E ST R, a book based on one of Frank O'Hara's wildest poems ever, called "Easter"--Jeff took an old picture of Frank and made it into a magical mystery of color. Look for this awesome book at area bookstores soon!
