More on Urban Roots Garden Center

As you may have heard, there are a bunch of forward thinking folks working to develop a Garden Center on the west side of Buffalo. The group is moving forward fast with visions of a place to buy mulch, organic vegetable plants, perennials and pots within walking distance of the Elmwood Strip next spring.
This week's meeting will bring any new comers up to speed, with a report on our market survey results, and next steps in the feasibility plan, the location, and plans for membership. If you think you might be interested in volunteering or just shopping at Urban Roots next year, this would be a great time to check in. From the invitation sent out by the group:
The next meeting of the Urban Roots initiative is Monday, August 15th at 7:00PM at Pilgrim St. Lukeis Church, at the corner of Richmond and Utica in Buffalo.
If you are unsure about the Urban Roots concept, here are the essentials:
A collection of Buffalo residents already dedicated to beautifying the west side thought it would be quite brilliant to be able to buy gardening supplies on the west side of Buffalo.
The Urban Roots Cooperative project was launched. It's a proposed Garden Center located on the West side of Buffalo. Urban Roots will not just be a place to buy gardening supplies; it will be the epicenter of Buffalo Urban gardening. It will incorporate workshops and community involvement while also providing jobs for neighborhood kids.
If you walked the Garden Walk, then you saw a tremendous pride on the west side in the Urban Garden. We want to keep that pride alive and well within the Buffalo City limits.
Please forward this invitation to anyone you think might be interested.

In the meantime, posting will be light as we log new stories in the new publishing system which will only be viewable when we launch on Friday.
As always, we appreciate our users’ patience as we make this transition but we promise it will be well worth it. With faster load times, a comment view …
Caroline Kennedy was in town for a visit with our mayor yesterday. A possible choice to succeed US Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, Kennedy's name has been mentioned along with that of Attorney General Andrew Cuomo (son of former New York Governor Mario Cuomo) and our own Byron Brown, among others.
Certainly, Kennedy has "been around politics" all of her life, which is to say she was born into a family of politicos and lived in the White House--neither of which would necessarily f …
Free light rail rides on downtown's above ground section could be derailed thanks to the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority's budget mess. That is the news coming out of a Buffalo Place meeting this morning. Facing a budget shortfall and reduced State operating assistance, the NFTA is scrambling for new revenue sources and is contemplating charging for rides along the lengthy downtown pedestrian mall.
Well it is Christmas time in the city and the NFTA helped put people and especially children into the mood in a very festive and fun way. One of my favorite memories of childhood was taking the train downtown with my grandfather. I would gaze out the windows and watch the tunnel speed by. It always felt like we were going a million miles an hour.
Then there was the ability to stand up and walk around during the ride without the need to be strapped down. It was always a fun time …
