Mom & Pops To Go

A few weeks ago, when I posted a story about a locally made video that was attempting to lure Anthony Bourdain to Buffalo, I certainly never expected it to incite such controversy (and over 100 comments). Some of our more popular posts are a little more subtle. Take for example this story of Mom & Pop’s Natural Foods from last October; a small post about a small store trying to do the right thing for the University Heights neighborhood. With only a handful of comments, you would think it was just an ordinary post, but it isn’t. About a month ago I noticed that the video that accompanies it, a slideshow of the shop’s offerings, has been viewed from start to finish over 350 times. That’s not anywhere near our highest ranking video here on the site, but in my eyes, it’s a hefty number for a post about a corner store. It seems like people are really into this little market.
So a week or so ago I decided to stop in and see how things were going for Jim Park, co-owner of Mom & Pop’s. Their bulk offerings have increased dramatically since my first visit, and they are eagerly awaiting the upcoming bounty of local farms to fill out their produce offerings. Mom & Pops’ modest line of prepared foods is very popular with the UB student body, especially the architecture and engineering departments. Every day Mom & Pop's emails their clientele the list of the day’s specials. Warm and wholesome Moosewood Soups are available, along with Mom & Pop’s line of signature wraps. The version containing tofu and homemade kimchee is especially popular.

Monthly gatherings for spoken word performances are tremendously popular, hearkening the days when this part of Main Street was littered with coffee shops, each providing a stage and an audience for the area’s many talented students.
Most of Mom & Pops’ customers are dedicated regulars, folks that live or work in the neighborhood and understand the importance of “buying local”. In Buffalo, our grandparents’ generation fed their families from small, neighborhood shops like this one, shops that supported local families and farmers.
Mom & Pop’s inventory is made up of the many popular items one can find in the organic or natural section of larger supermarkets. Their offerings focus on foods that are not only organic, but also fair. They also have a strong selection of locally produced goods. If you haven’t stopped into Mom & Pop’s yet, you ought to.

Being in the Bay area and Northern California for the last 2 years, I can see my already beloved Buffalo with new eyes. More importantly, after studying culinary arts and working within the field, I can taste the city with a new palate. I have had the fortunate opportunity to get my first bite of Buffalo at the new Tabree restaurant on Elmwood. My guest and I had the privilege to indulge in an amazing tasting menu off of their abbreviated menu during the soft opening.

There were so many exciting changes this year at the Taste of Buffalo, I was anxious to listen to the bands, watch the cooking demos and taste all of the wonderful food. I had so much fun on Saturday that I went back the next day; the turnout for both days was pretty incredible. The heat and threat of rain didn’t seem to deter anyone from attending the Taste. I saw many people who either watched the cooking demos (to get away from the crowds) for a while or sought shelter on a n …
Buffalo loves its Bills, but does it love brownie bites and fudge swirls? Perry's Ice Cream is hoping so.
The local ice cream maker officially unveiled its newest sports-inspired flavor, Buffalo Bills Brownie Blitz. Kicking off the new flavor with a press conference at Tops Friendly Markets on Elmwood, Perry's Ice Cream and the Buffalo Bills joined together this past Monday to offer media, shoppers and fans a free sample of Brownie Blitz.

While eating lunch today at Romeo & Juliet’s, a strange thought occurred: what would I do if this place ever closed? Have you ever noticed how happy people are when they walk in there? I assume it’s because they know they’re about to have a great meal, and the charming atmosphere doesn’t hurt either (I dig that Italian music).
Anyway, I started to think of the restaurants in Buffalo I couldn’t do without. What if for some bizarre reason I could only choose five plac …

Mom & Pops is great. It's a wonderful alternative to Wendy's for prepared foods and they've got great prices. Most of their products are local or regionally produced. You can also order anything wholesale out of their catalogs. Great place! I love their wraps!
