Mayor Announces A Day Dedicated To Eating @ The H20

Now there's a mouthful... I don't think I've ever quite heard of a dedicated day longer than Sahlen’s Dog Days of Summer at Dug’s Dive Day. I guess that the point was made, and that's the important thing. Monday, September 1st is, officially, a day to enjoy a Sahlen's dog and the waterfront... it's a combo deal according to The Mayor. And as much as I'd like to see it (cough, cough), I'm probably won't be able to make it to Dug's Dive in time to see the Sahlen’s World Picnic Style Hot Dog Eating Championship. These types of events are big draws - ever caught one on the Food Channel? They can be hard to swallow.
Anyone willing to gorge themselves on dogs that day can go up against the likes of Canadian pro-eaters “Furious” Pete Czerwinski and Pierre “The Food Machette” Vincellette. Arnie “Chowhound” Chapman will MC the event this year - adding professional merit to the event. There's going to be activities for the kids as well as a live performance by Strictly Hip. Let's hope that the rain holds off for this end-of-the-summer blast... it should be a real gas. All of the details can be found on this BRO post.

As we mentioned in our previous post, we’re in the process of changing the Buffalo Rising site. We’re almost there as we expect to launch the new site on Friday, December 19th.
In the meantime, posting will be light as we log new stories in the new publishing system which will only be viewable when we launch on Friday.
As always, we appreciate our users’ patience as we make this transition but we promise it will be well worth it. With faster load times, a comment view …
Caroline Kennedy was in town for a visit with our mayor yesterday. A possible choice to succeed US Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, Kennedy's name has been mentioned along with that of Attorney General Andrew Cuomo (son of former New York Governor Mario Cuomo) and our own Byron Brown, among others.
Certainly, Kennedy has "been around politics" all of her life, which is to say she was born into a family of politicos and lived in the White House--neither of which would necessarily f …
Free light rail rides on downtown's above ground section could be derailed thanks to the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority's budget mess. That is the news coming out of a Buffalo Place meeting this morning. Facing a budget shortfall and reduced State operating assistance, the NFTA is scrambling for new revenue sources and is contemplating charging for rides along the lengthy downtown pedestrian mall.
Well it is Christmas time in the city and the NFTA helped put people and especially children into the mood in a very festive and fun way. One of my favorite memories of childhood was taking the train downtown with my grandfather. I would gaze out the windows and watch the tunnel speed by. It always felt like we were going a million miles an hour.
Then there was the ability to stand up and walk around during the ride without the need to be strapped down. It was always a fun time …

Um, is the title supposed to mean at the water? That is H2O not H20. The last character is a letter not a number. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H2o
Not trying to be an ass, but little things like this that go uncorrected drive me crazy.

What is it about Buffalo and food? I like Buffalo's Sahlens much more than Rochesters Zweigles, though Zweigles spends more on advertising and name brand recognition (wont Buffalo businesses ever learn to brand compete on par with Rochester)
They say the Sunday was invented on Broadway They the town of Hamburg invented the yes Hamburger Dont know anyone else that does a better job with Fried Baloney Sandwiches and Beef on Weck or Pierogis or Gyros.
Buffalo in short is so much more than Chicken Wings.
Its kind of funny when one compares a Rochester Garbage Plate which is garbage to the various Buffalo samplings.
Its one of the Buffalo ironies that people live with everyday..we have the lake, colleges, music, art, food, light rail, history, architecture, parks, neighborhoods and street grid that rival Boston to Phildelphia....yet we dont have the economy to sew it all together.
We even have strong companies but unfortunately too many of those companies do not brand themselves like they do in Rochester..and other companies managers dont step into local control board, local politics, local development agencies, etc except to ask for money.
Its like we are perpetually a 6 cylinder engine running on 2 cylinders.

The picture above would have been mouthwatering in May. It will be mouthwatering NEXT May, but today it isn't.
The Salen's and Wardys left in our freezer won't be charcoal grilled; they will be freezer burned. Then they will literally go to the dogs!

Amateurs have a chance to walk away with the $500 grand prize ($250 runner up) if they can eat the most dogs in 8 minutes! We need locals to steal the win on this from the Canadians! Get to registering at www.competitiveeaters.com!
Can't make it this year? Keep an eye on www.buffalodogdays.com for next year's event slated for July 4th!

Coney Island has Nathans; we should have a Sahlens retail store on the water front. Maybe its time the Hatch gets new owners. We could have Hotdog eating competition - joking. Eitherway, Buffalo's icons in food should definelty set up in high traffic areas like the waterfront.
