Tucked away on a small private street between Delaware Avenue and Elmwood Avenue, just off North Street, lies a quiet English mews. Designed by the architectural firm, Edward B. Green & Son during the mid 20's, this unique group of 21 stucco and brick homes allows a visitor to envision quaint village life while, actually, the homes are situated in the heart of a large city. The inspiration for the design of Mayfair Lane was an area in London, England, named "Pomander Walk." One of the most unique features of MF can be found at the end of the Lane. It is here that the architects designed a large house often referred to as "the castle," perhaps because of its turret and the large wooden drawbridge that sets it apart from the other homes. This separate home was designed as the personal residence of E.B. Green, Jr. and it is rumored that the large window in the center was to afford the architect a view of his unique creation. E.B. Green Sr. lived at #19 Mayfair Lane. The thoughtful blending of city, suburban, and country life into this magnificent architectural structure is just another example of the hidden treasures that abound in the city of Buffalo.
