Mary's Broiled Grapefruit???
To some a broiled grapefruit for breakfast could sound like the most unappetizing meal on the planet. To others it sounds like a healthy and delicious way to start the day. Betty's on Virginia serves something called Mary's Broiled Grapefruit and I had been hearing from friends that it was very good. To me, the dish sounded interesting, but never something that I thought would 'fuel the tanks' until lunch. Recently my doc told me to start eating healthier and suggested that I start with a small breakfast (something I usually skip altogether).
The first item that I scanned on the menu, upon arriving to Betty's, was The Love Sandwich. Many times I have found myself eating this delicious bagel and cream cheese bomb, and many times I have thought to myself (afterwards), "I should have tried the broiled grapefruit." Well, today was the day that I went for the healthy alternative. I just happened to be having breakfast with Carroll Simon, co-owner of Betty's, and when I ordered the broiled grapefruit she exclaimed, "That's my favorite item on the menu... it's named after my mother. When I first put that on the menu people thought I was crazy. But it caught on and now it is one of our better sellers. "
Now that ultimate Frisbee season is here and I have to run against kids who are a lot younger than me, I figure that it can't hurt to try out some of these lighter alternatives. When my grapefruit arrived I must say that I was surprised to see that it actually looked quite appetizing. It had indeed been sectioned and broiled, and it had a light sprinkling of brown sugar caramelized on its surface. There was a pile of fruit off to the side (a welcomed bonus) that consisting of grapes, melon, pineapple and orange slices.
The meal was a real success. The grapefruit was juicy and delicious... and the side of fruit actually hit the spot as well. I found that I was utterly content by the end of breakfast and I even thought to myself that I should make this a routine in the morning. Plus, I think that Betty's has some of the best coffee in Buffalo, and the servers are quick to fill up your cup whenever they pass by. Who knew that Mary's Broiled Grapefruit would be such a winner?

A corner joint needn't be a dive.
And Papa Jake's doesn't make its patrons choose between a laid-back bar atmosphere and delicious, fresh food. Scott Leary, the new owner of Papa Jake’s Saloon on Elmwood, knows how to provide casual comfort and a very satisfying dining experience.
“We don’t take shortcuts here at Papa Jake’s,” Leary says. He proves this with Papa Jake’s fresh and tasty menu. “I don’t want to call this a late night menu, because we have amaz …
With the opening of more and more coffee houses downtown, some people wonder if Buffalo is really a coffee town. Buffalo is the original coffee town!
The "coffee break" which is taken for granted as a standard part of any work day has only been around for about a hundred years. Coffee culture has continued to flourish in this country and the espresso boom of the Pacific Northwest in the 1990s has seen to it that every other gas station in America now has a barista on staff. Perha …
It's great to see stylish, hip, new restaurants pop up downtown such as Sea Bar on Ellicott Street, which specializes in contemporary Japanese food. A clean ultra-modern space, Sea Bar’s dining room is quaint and inviting. The sleek sushi bar has counter seating and the wet bar, with beer, sake, and wine, has at least 10 sakes to choose from on any given night. We were happy to try a Sojitio, a sake mojito, which had the right amount of mint without too much sweetness.

Ten years ago, the downtown of My Fair City was forever altered when a Big Dinosaur appeared on the scene. Thankfully—unlike 1950’s Tokyo—when this dino showed up our downtown wasn’t flattened, but considerably improved. Dinosaur Bar B Que, a restaurant that originated in downtown Syracuse in the 1980’s, planted its foot in downtown Rochester in 1998. It was an instant hit—it’s common to have a line waiting to get in at all times. And it’s clearly Hog Heaven— …

Absolutely one of Buffalo's best places for Sunday Brunch, worth the wait if it's busy and great wait staff. Eat outside if you can.

Betty's certainly has some of the best coffee in town. I've never had anything but an amazing breakfast with them. Broiled grapefruit is a classic French recipe. To the best of my knowlege it became very popular here amongst the more refined crowd in the 50's. Many French items gained popuarity here once air travel was available to the public. I think the Waldorf served it. The grapefruit is generally topped with brown sugar, broiled, then garnished with half of a maraschino cherry. Many chefs have played with the recipe over the years. Cinnamon is a nice addition. (Too much information? Sorry, I got a little excited!)
