Look Out for the Blue Buffalo

At a press conference in front of the Market Arcade Building Tuesday afternoon, celebrating National Tourism Week, Mayor Brown, Rich Geiger, Buffalo Niagara Convention & Visitors Bureau; Grant Loomis, Office of the County Executive, and Michael Schmand, Buffalo Place, painted the first of many buffaloes that will once again be visible on the sidewalks as part of Walk Buffalo – a self-guided walking tour of downtown Buffalo.
Walk Buffalo is a free, 2.5 mile, self-guided walking tour that serves as a wonderful way to learn about the rich history and architecture that downtown Buffalo has to offer. The key to participating in Walk Buffalo is obtaining the free Walk Buffalo Tour Book at the Buffalo Visitors Center in the Market Arcade Building at 617 Main Street. The booklet includes a map, colorful photos and history of the 28 stops on the tour.
It has been over six years since the Blue Buffaloes made their appearance on city sidewalks, and as one might expect, the elements have caused those little creatures to fade or disappear. This week, employees from the City of Buffalo have been busy repainting the buffaloes to ensure they are ready for the summer tourism season. The paint for this project was donated by Millington Lockwood Business Interiors
The roots of Walk Buffalo stem from the mid-1990s when Nicholas Cushner created the original version of the tour. In 2002, the New Millennium Group enhanced the project by updating, rewriting and redesigning the guidebook, as well as repainting the buffaloes on the sidewalks. The Buffalo Niagara Convention & Visitors Bureau has been a partner in this project, helping print 100,000 copies of the tour book to date. The CVB also uses the Walk Buffalo book to market the wealth of architectural experiences visitors can have in Buffalo.

This project is both a success and a failure. Both productive and counterproductive. I like it and I hate it. And most comment posters are right regardless of their take... reason being there are lots of sides to this story. It completely depends on so many factors, some of which have no definitive proof. Therefore we must rely on speculation, judgment, experience and opinion for much of the basis of the argument for or against.

Sunday was the first time that I ever saw a real live pet blessing ceremony. I had heard of the occasion before, but never really had the opportunity to check one out. This was also the first year that Reverend Drew Ludwig (Lafayette Church) ever hosted a pet blessing ceremony. And the ceremony went so well that attendees are already talking about how to make next year's blessing bigger and better. Drew didn't even know if animals were going to show up since this was such a last m …

I'm just glad nobody got hurt in the scrum to grab hold of that paint roller.
Since there is no caption (imagine that), just who are the other "community leaders" in the picture"?

A heartfelt thank you to those behind Walk Buffalo! When I first worked on a client project in Buffalo a few years ago, I couldn't miss the bright blue Walk Buffalo guidebooks in the rack at the NFTA terminal downtown. I put one in my canvas briefcase, and read it and referred to it over and over until it kinda fell apart. Adding to the cool factor is that a friend from My Fair City has some of the photo credits.
Umm...that reminds me: the NFTA rack could use replenishing :-)

this is a very fun walk and I thoroughly enjoy it when I did the walk this past winter. I recommend going on a weekday so you can go inside some of the buildings featured on the tour. I took my camera along with me and was expecting to get kicked out of the buildings once security saw me with a camera....that was not the case though. most of them were very nice and looked the other way as I took photos after I told them I was shooting just for fun.
