Like A Phoenix

Yesterday was a big day for Johnson Park. Community activists finally realized their dreams of the city’s first park when a historic placard along with renderings (inset) were unveiled by Assemblyman Hoyt, Judge Nowak and Councilman Davis. The day was very symbolic for the many people who have been huge proponents in reclaiming the once downtrodden park. Brian Davis officially dedicated the day to Johnson Park and told Marilyn Rodgers that she could add the acclaimed distinction to the rest of the honors that the West Village Renaissance Group (WVRG) has racked up in recent years. The Mayor arrived and examined a rendering depicting the 5-year plan to take Johnson Park to the next level.
I was asked to say a word at the dedication, which I gladly accepted, mainly because the effort of the WVRG was one of the reasons that I started Buffalo Rising. I wanted to pay homage to people like Marilyn, and Mary Simpson (President of the Days Park Association).
When I first met Marilyn, we sat on her front porch and I listened to her describe the horror stories that had befallen the park. She told me about her neighbors (both good and bad), and the newfound determination that was energizing these oversized pocket parks. As a matter of fact, Marilyn wrote about her struggles and her successes in the first issue of, what was then known as, ‘Explore the Elmwood/Allentown District Magazine’. A photo of Days Park graced the front cover of the issue, while Marilyn’s story about the history of Johnson Park began to circulate throughout the local coffee shops.
I’ve tried to keep close tabs on Johnson Park ever since those early BR days. We’ve witnessed some heated battles and some wonderful victories. We’ve seen property owners like Mike Hananel come in and add to the stability of the park. And now we’re going to see the next phase… the next stage in the life of this stubborn-as-hell community. A fund has been set up to handle the cost of the newly unveiled park features. And wouldn’t you know it… Rocco Termini arrived yesterday and handed the group a check in the amount of $500 to kick things off. The funds will ultimately go towards paying for a jogging path, bike racks, a conservatory, a meditation labyrinth, and numerous other additions. Brian Davis hinted that he would try to speed up the five-year plan, and The Mayor praised the assembled group for their efforts and their dedication to the city.
It is days like yesterday that I will remember many years from now. Urban activism is alive and well in the city of Buffalo because of catalyst groups like the WVRG.

As we mentioned in our previous post, we’re in the process of changing the Buffalo Rising site. We’re almost there as we expect to launch the new site on Friday, December 19th.
In the meantime, posting will be light as we log new stories in the new publishing system which will only be viewable when we launch on Friday.
As always, we appreciate our users’ patience as we make this transition but we promise it will be well worth it. With faster load times, a comment view …
Caroline Kennedy was in town for a visit with our mayor yesterday. A possible choice to succeed US Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, Kennedy's name has been mentioned along with that of Attorney General Andrew Cuomo (son of former New York Governor Mario Cuomo) and our own Byron Brown, among others.
Certainly, Kennedy has "been around politics" all of her life, which is to say she was born into a family of politicos and lived in the White House--neither of which would necessarily f …
Free light rail rides on downtown's above ground section could be derailed thanks to the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority's budget mess. That is the news coming out of a Buffalo Place meeting this morning. Facing a budget shortfall and reduced State operating assistance, the NFTA is scrambling for new revenue sources and is contemplating charging for rides along the lengthy downtown pedestrian mall.
Well it is Christmas time in the city and the NFTA helped put people and especially children into the mood in a very festive and fun way. One of my favorite memories of childhood was taking the train downtown with my grandfather. I would gaze out the windows and watch the tunnel speed by. It always felt like we were going a million miles an hour.
Then there was the ability to stand up and walk around during the ride without the need to be strapped down. It was always a fun time …

I hope none of those annoying preservationists spoiled anything by pointing out that they're the ones who got historic district status for the West Village long before Marilyn ever moved in.

Ah, yes, the neighborhood group back in the late 70's submitted the nomination form to the National Register. If anyone would like to view the nomination, there is a link to it on our website for the Johnson Park Restoration Fund at http://jprestoration.blogspot.com. Thanks for pointing that out, Mr. Chips. I am so ever grateful to these citizens who came before me! Afterall, I've only been in the WV for 14 years. My mom, however, lived in this area for most of her life, so I guess it carries down through generations.
Now, let me say this. Newell - you're the one who made it so obvious that we could forge ahead - you deserve great credit for your enthusiasm and working to build a better Buffalo. I am so happy to have the great honor of knowing you.
There has been tremendous change in the past five years that has litearlly taken blood, sweat, and tears to make this all possible. No one, no entity, no group can ever spoil the enthusiasm or vision for this area. I personally thank all involved. Pledges and checks have started to come in and we are looking forward to a time when the kids can really tear it up in the conservatory.
If you want to make a donation, you can make your check out to the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo with "Johnson Park Restoration Fund" written in the memo line and send it to the CFGB at 712 Main St, Buffalo, NY 14202. The CFGB administers the fund and that includes receiving the checks, sending the acknowledgement letters, various reports, submitting the IRS 990, and the annual audit.
Thanks, Newell and all who took part in yesterday's event and those who will take part in the future!

Great work to all involved.
Dedication and perseverance on the tougher path is becoming a rare trait when all one has to do is pick up and move to were the separation of classes has everything "good". Its a scary journey to immerse your time and money in a task that others would quickly fail in and thus choose not even attempt to do.
You'll be rewarded with a first class walkable park and neighborhood to live in while setting a great example for others on the personal fullfillment and satisfaction that comes from putting yourself on the line and (re)creating something beautiful.

Thanks, MJW! We already are in talks with LP Ciminelli to work together on this as part of the work they are doind to Hutch Tech as a model for future reconstruction projects at the schools. It is an exciting time, especially when one considers the diversity of the neighborhood. Good for all in the area.
Now, jvegas, I have the survey of the park in front of me as performed by Niagara Boundary on July 6, 2007. So, this is going to be a rough "guesstimate" using the scale bar for determining the length of the jogging path. If you were to run around the proposed path that will replace the first four feet of the park from the curbline, it would take approximately 4.5 cycles to hit one mile. Hope that helps...

Saturday was a great moment for the Johnson Park Re-development. Having watched the area come so far this will be the Icing on the cake. We need more Marilyn Rodger's in the neighborhoods around Buffalo. I hope to see the first phase come and the rest of the project be completed. Newell and Marilyn keep it up Buffalo is rising.

Being a newcomer to the area, I have enjoyed this park for some time. I always wondered what the story was behind it. I always see a young man picking up litter with a claw pole and knew he wasn't employed by the city and now I know the dedication of the people who really care about this park and the surrounding neighborhood. The new display case really gives some great information about the history of the area and the plans for the park are exciting. I went to the website http://jprestoration.blogspot.com and was impressed with the efforts of this organization. All in all I feel great having made my decision to move to Buffalo due to Buffalo Rising and the efforts of this neighborhood. I feel like I am in good hands.
