You all know how much I love Guercio's, so it's no surprise that I was there yesterday afternoon. One of the things I love about going to Guercio's during the day is watching how this little independent business maneuvers its tremendous wholesale business around its retail customers. Guys in jackets and aprons run cases and cases of product up and down the narrow aisles from the back of the warehouse out to the curb all day long. Even better is the chance to bump into chefs and restaurant staff picking up smaller orders or last minute items for the evening's specials.

I was there to buy some of the ingredients necessary for preparing the recipe that will be featured in February's Buffalo Rising Magazine as part of Sunday Suppers. On my way out I noticed a new line of cookies being sold. Traditional Italian biscotti and sesame cookies made by Lena are packaged in cello bags and wrapped with ribbon. They're remarkably fresh and tasty and made locally.

The label reveals limited information about the business and the internet has turned up even less, so I'm afraid that a name is all that I have to offer you—Lena's Cookies. What I can tell you is that the anise biscotti is the kind that I prefer, with a lovely dense, crunchy, crumbly texture perfect for dipping in a good cup of coffee or tea. It's a shame that biscotti has become as popular as it has--there are so many bland, brick-like versions everywhere. I'm guessing that mass-production with an extended shelf-life in mind is the motivation behind that type of biscotti. Even better--Lena's homemade-style cookies are only $2.75 per package.

Just one more thing to love about Guercio's.

    Christa,

I share your admiration. Jujuleni cookies are my favorite cookie of all time. Guercio's is a treasure trove of many wonderful delights.I also enjoy running into restaurant friends in the early morning hours.
