Leather and Heels: Detroit Cobras Rock the 'Hawk

Story Options

Combining the timeless sounds of 60s Motown classics with the swagger of modern garage rock, the Detroit Cobras have created a rock' n' roll sound all of their own. Beginning with their first album, 1998's Mink Rat or Rabbit, the Cobras have established themselves as one of the most important and interesting bands in the Detroit garage scene. Though the band's material consists of reworked versions of lost Motown gems, to call the Detroit Cobras a cover band would be an injustice. Digging deep through their record collections, the Cobras uncover a slew of fantastic material and give the songs a new life, making them sound fresh, not dated.

Though the band's line up has changed over the years, the deep husky voice of singer Rachel Nagy has remained a constant. Described by All Music Guide as “Peggy Lee gone to seed and chain-smoking while standing on a Detroit street corner,” Nagy, along with guitarist Mary Ramirez, add instant sex appeal to the tunes.

Their latest album, Tied and True, has found the Cobras experimenting with a more mellow, soulful sound. Not to worry though, while this album may be more low key than the previous offerings, there's still plenty of swagger and attitude to go around.

This Sunday the Detroit Cobras will be bringing their rocking sounds and rowdy live show to the Mohawk Place, so make sure to catch what Jack White of the White Stripes has called his favorite band. Opening the show are the Willowz, and Buffalo's own The Found.
