Tour the H.H. Richardson Complex

Henry Hobson Richardson's approach to architectural design in the second half of the 19th century was so distinctive and influential that it gave rise to a whole style of architecture, which came to be known as "Richardsonian Romanesque." Design elements found in his stone churches, train stations and civic buildings were emulated in thousands of buildings nationwide.

This tour takes you around the perimeter of one of his greatest designs, the Buffalo State Hospital (interior tours have been closed to groups since 2003). The largest building Richardson ever designed (over 2000 feet long), it points the way to a style which would soon dominate the profession and America.

The complex is complemented with landscaping by Frederick Law Olmsted.

The tour takes place this Saturday, September 16, 9:30 n 11:30 AM. Meet in front of the Administration Building, 400 Forest Avenue. There is a $10 donation for this tour.

    I'm a graduate of Cynthia's classroom.

There are few people who know the material and how to access it as effectively as Cynthia. Go check it out...the collection on things Buffalo is amazing. They are adding rows of new shelving for this expanding collection.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, David. This tour repeats on October 28 and November 18, 10:00 AM both mornings. We meet on the patio in front of the Central Library or if the weather is inclement, inside the vestibule.

Making all of the material available on the internet seems like a very obvious thing to me .
