Late Night at the Knox

Located a mere mile and a half from my house, I often fail to acknowledge its significance. Recognized as one of the world's leading collections of modern and contemporary art with more than 6,500 works in its collection and a dynamic series of exhibitions and public programs, the Albright - Knox Art Gallery tends to also be overlooked by other long time Buffalo residents.
However, this summer, the chance to rediscover the Albright - Knox Art Gallery is hitting Buffalonians with full force. Director of the gallery, Louis Grachos has announced that the gallery will be open to the public Thursday evenings until 10PM beginning July 17. Grachos said, “These additional hours provide a wonderful new option for people who can’t make it to the Gallery during regular daytime hours.”
Accompanying these new evening hours will be special half-hour tours, led by Grachos each Thursday starting at 6:30 PM. Specifically, the first Director's Tour on July 17 will include a sneak preview of the exhibition Op Art Revisited.
Not only will the gallery be open later, but the Gallery's outstanding restaurant, Muse, will offer themed dinners, wine tastings, and a bar menu. This beautiful restaurant overlooks the Sculpture Garden and features al fresco dining during the summer months. Offering fabulous features from drinks, to snacks, to a light lunch, to a full dinner, Muse satisfies all. Particularly on July 24, Muse will offer a Garden Walk themed menu.
Muse is open for lunch Wednesday through Saturday 11:30 AM - 3 PM, dinner Thursday through Friday 5 - 10 PM, and brunch Sunday 10:30 AM - 3 PM. Director Grachos said, "Visitors can enjoy a lovely evening contemplating artwork, browsing in the shop, and dining in the restaurant.”
Members of the Albright-knox Art Gallery will enjoy free admission, marked down parking, and a 10% discount in Muse and the Gallery Shop. General admission is $10, but buy-one-get-one free coupons can be found at buffalorising.com.
Thanks to generous support of Deborah Ronnen, these Thursday evening events are made possible. The gallery is open Wednesday 10 AM to 5 PM, Thursday through Friday 10 AM to 10 PM, and Saturday through Sunday, 10 AM to 5 PM. For additional information visit www.albrightknox.org.
So, if your favorite band isn't playing at Thursday in the Square this week, come check out The Albright - Knox Art Gallery instead, and enjoy one of Buffalo's most prized possessions.
*Special note: The gallery will be closed tomorrow, July 4.

Back in April, Melanie Majewski submitted a wonderful article on Errol Daniels. In it, she goes in to great detail about the artist’s background and photographs. She also makes mention of a show coming to Buffalo once a venue was found. That venue has finally been named: El Museo at 91 Allen Street.
Next Friday, September 12th from 7 PM until 10 PM there will be an Opening Reception for the artist. The exhibit consists of Daniels’ photography which centers on creating portrai …
A week after his 83rd birthday and on the eve of a new year, Michael Goldberg collapsed in his Manhattan studio. He died of a heart attack and the world lost one of the few remaining survivors of the New York School and a major abstract expressionist painter. What’s nice about being an artist is that even when you are gone, your work lives on forever. Bringing this influential artist to Buffalo is the UB Anderson Gallery. They are presenting a memorial exhibit entitled “Ode to …
Vincent Gallo, he of Buffalo 66 and The Brown Bunny, will be at Soundlab on September 25th with his band, RRIICCEE.
We very much enjoyed Gallo's interview with Chad Radford, that can be viewed at his blogspot here: http://chadrad.blogspot.com/2007/12/thats-not-art-with-rriiccee-vincent.html.[parental advisory]
As for his music, here is an excerpt from Radford's take on Gallo: This is not experimental music made for the sake of experimentation. As Gallo explains, improvisation is …

While I love the idea, wouldn't have been better to do it on another night? Give people two different nights to come out and enjoy something special.
Maybe do a combo deal with the BPO. Set it up where a concert is done between the ABK and Lake and do it at sunset. Have special tours between 5-10 at the ABK. Keep people in the city for 2 nights a week.
If not, this is still a pretty good idea.

I thought the art collection totaled about 14,000 items. Is 6,500 their new number?
