Lake Effect Man Is Larger Than Life

Lake Effect Man Is Larger Than Life

You may have already heard (or seen) the big buzz around the city today. Pearl Street Brew Pub has a new ornament hanging from one of its corners. You may recall this post back in February that featured a drawing of what was to come... a gigantic 'Lake Effect Man' beer tap. The tap is deigned to beckon people from miles around - and the premise is apparently working because there were photographers buzzing around the building all day long.

This morning Dino Pinelli, owner of Charlie O'Brien's (another fine Buffalo establishment) sent me a heads up that he had seen Lake Effect Man and the sight was very impressive. As I biked down to the scene I was not quite sure what to expect... but I must admit that the new addition is pretty cool. You can't miss the giant tap affixed to the corner of the building.

looks awesome- you have to see it in person to really appreciate it.. seemed to be a big hit at lunch time. You would have thought there was an air show going on with all of the people smiling and pointing in the sky. Pearl street does not stop investing- Earl Ketry and the partners are and should be an inspiration to local business owners.

unless that thing actually dispenses beer, it is a bit over the top.

but if it does pour a frosty brew - outta my way, its friday!

Hopefully it dispenses beer. They bought it from a now-defunct KFC in Elmwood.

Rumor has it that if the zoning variance goes through, the company responsible for the 'Lake Effect Man' beer tap will begin work on a giant Frank Lloyd Wright head to be installed at 57 Tillinghast.

....and don't forget the giant cup and saucer in the original spot coffee plans. i don't get it / ... either they are picky about what they pick on or somehow a giant beer tap is not pickable, but a giant coffee cup IS.

quirky and different. that is for sure. Guess it suits a city that revolves around booze and little else.

comptart does have a point- this is the same Preservation Board that pee'd their pants over an awning on Delaware Avenue. Pearl St. Brew Pub is in a Preservation District. Who would have thought?

It's great the owners continue to invest in the business- but at some point you have to say enough is enough with the exterior 'improvements.' It is beginning to look like Buffalo's own Salvatore's. Tacky! If they have more money to spend- how about building on one of the parking lots nearby?

I don't think [ I may be wrong] but Pearl Street Brew Pub is not in a preservation district. Stillwater is in a national registered preservation district. The awning Stillwater wanted was a barrel vaulted acrylic awning, if they had gone for a traditional canvas awning, things may have been different. As to "Lake Effect Man" I am on the hedge on this one. Pearl Street Brew Pub has done a lot over the years to the exterior, all the balcony's are very "French Quarterish" looking and kinda cool, this newest addition is kinda cool-quirky looking, but the end of the ornamentation [other than hanging baskets, which would enhance the iron work] I would hope, or, I agree, Salvitores in the city, Main Stree USA Disney, Route 66 etc...

shall I say it? the lake effect man, is very well endowed. i dig it, we need more giant phallic things that have the possibility of producing beer strung throughout the city.

Great!, now if only the city can take a few dollars out of its surplus and PAVE PEARL STREET maybe I can drive there without needing a moon rover to get through the craters. Seriously, I don't take people from out of town here, 'cuz it is embarassing to drive down Pearl Street!

Actually, Pearl Street Grill is in the Ellicott Preservation District, which stretches south from Niagara Square to Seneca and then around to Oak. It's that Preservation District that stopped the demolition of the Webb Building years ago.

In this case, the preservation board actually denied all the new work on the exterior, including the lake effect man, and told Pearl Street that they had to remove previously installed exterior elements like the copper canopy over the entrance, because they argued that it was not what was previously approved of.

Pearl St. then appealed to the common council which in this case had the power to overturn all or parts of the preservation board's decision. Long story short the council overturned all of it and the lake effect man and the rest of the improvements got the green light.

In case anyone was interested....... I think it looks great.

Thanks for the info, Jay. Good for the council. The unelected, unaccountable Preservation Board is only an advisory panel and deserves to be treated as such.

Long story short the council overturned all of it

Tielman and the PB lost all remaining credibility a while ago when they tried to force an ordinary non-historic empty building next to a Wilson Farms to remain standing forever because it supposedly added to the character of a run-down creepy alley way behind it. I consider the current PB majority to be anti-business obstructionists at this point.

That's right -- complain about Lake Effect Man but not about the state of those buildings across the street! But I forgot, they ARE in a preservation district!

personally I never minded the lake effect snow storms

    they create wonderful panoramas

they are a wonderful opportunity to sit in front of the fireplace

they are a great way to build community support helping and being helped by neighbors

they are a wonderful way to get a much needed day off without an excuse

and my favorite their a very romantic way to ask for sex (there is nothing else to do) LOL hahahaha

no...the only criticism I can have is not the weather or the severity but the length of the winter season

lake effect man is awesome! I took a little detour on the way home last night to check him out. next thing they need to do is get the city to pave pearl as I nearly lost a tire navigating down that mess of a street.
