A series of free audio tours of 50 historic sites in Buffalo is available by using your cell phone or downloading an a MP3 from the internet, thanks to Buffalo Tours, a joint venture by the Preservation Coalition and the Landmark Society that offers guided tours of the city.
"It'll almost be like having a guide with you, but actually keeping one available is limited," said Todd Mitchell. "It opens up so many more possibilities."
Buffalo's rich architectural history is now available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to people across the country. The realization that their product can reach such a wide audience is leading to a constant evolution of the product. Mitchell said they may add multimedia effect like slide shows and video clips to their website.
"We're really marketing this to everyone," he said. "From the beginning our thinking has expanded greatly. We realize that this can be used for so many purposes."
Got friends in town you'd like to show off our city to? Want to explore at your own pace, while learning valuable history lessons? Just feel like getting to know your surroundings better? Grab a brochure, your cell phone and sneakers and get to know Buffalo.
"Many Buffalonians really don't appreciate how, within one square mile, there can be such an incredible wealth of architecture and history," Mitchell said. "There are very few cities in the U.S. that have all this. Hopefully this will enable more people to appreciate it."
Enjoy BR's accompanying audio tour and slide show of City Hall. The text of all the tours was written by Preservation Coalition docent Denise Prince, checked for accuracy by Martin Wachadlo, and read by WBFO's Chris Jamele. They are hosted by the Talking Phone Book, and made possible thanks to a $2,500 grant from the New York State Council of the Arts.

So much for the reputation of chronic infighting between Buffalo preservationists! What a great collaboration. Watch out, Larry Quinn, they're all getting on the same page!
