Have you checked-in with the Kleinhans Community Association (KCA) at their web page recently?

I recommend frequent visits to the site to keep up on the positive changes this organization is making in the neighborhood. One of my favorite features is the property listings in their quarterly newsletter. Pride of home ownership is one of the greatest influences in a community. Neighbors that own their homes are the foundation of a strong, vibrant community. KCA has taken the initiative to list properties for sale in the neighborhood. Problem properties, some of them abandoned that could use some TLC by new owners, are also listed. New residents are welcomed and owners investing in their property, such as a new exterior color scheme, a gut rehab, or new garden, are also given recognition.

The Spring 2006 Newsletter also has some unsettling news: First Presbyterian Churchis tower on Symphony Circle requires extensive repairs. It was recently discovered that water has infiltrated 163-foot tower, completed in 1897, and has weakened it. The engineering firm of Siracuse Engineers and the architectural firm of Hamilton, Houston & Lownie have been hired to stabilize the structure and determine a course of corrective action. Several thick metal bands have been tied around the tower to stabilize it from further erosion. Although the cost of the repairs has not been fully defined, it is believed that it will cost many thousands of dollars. KCA has promised to keep us informed on efforts to secure funding to preserve the tower.

That "properties in transition" list is a fantastic resource. I'm in the midst of a job search, hoping to buy in Buffalo soon, and if everything works out I'll definitely be visiting that Web page again.

I can't imagine the church without the tower! Hopefully they caught the deterioration before it becomes cost-prohibitive for the congregation to tackle. This a cause the public would likely rally behind if needed I imagine.
