Hallowasted: Kitchen Distribution Is Back

For those of you who may have attended an underground concert at this unusual venue, the doors will re-open this Friday and Saturday. The two-day event series is being billed as Hallowasted and the flyers are steadily circulating around the city. Last February I spoke with Aimee Buyea who was trying to rebuild the underground art scene (see post) that had taken a hit since the closing of Kitchen Distribution. "Ever since Kitchen Distribution closed on the West Side," she said. "There has been nothing to take venue’s place."
These underground music venues are key when it comes to helping to promote the emerging musicians. Thanks to WBNY and Alison Zero at WBFO for keeping the local tunes in rotation too. The Indie Travel Guide describes Kitchen Distribution this way:
"Kitchen Distribution is an independent art space in Buffalo, NY that has been producing events for just over one year. Tucked away at 20 Auburn Avenue within an elusive warehouse. Books mostly experimental projects, but will host an occasional indie pop band."
Regardless as to whether Kitchen Distribution is back for a one-off or not, I'm just happy to hear that the scene is still hanging around. If you're into that underground music sorta stuff, you may want to head on over to 20 Auburn Avenue to check out this cool comeback.

As we mentioned in our previous post, we’re in the process of changing the Buffalo Rising site. We’re almost there as we expect to launch the new site on Friday, December 19th.
In the meantime, posting will be light as we log new stories in the new publishing system which will only be viewable when we launch on Friday.
As always, we appreciate our users’ patience as we make this transition but we promise it will be well worth it. With faster load times, a comment view …
Caroline Kennedy was in town for a visit with our mayor yesterday. A possible choice to succeed US Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, Kennedy's name has been mentioned along with that of Attorney General Andrew Cuomo (son of former New York Governor Mario Cuomo) and our own Byron Brown, among others.
Certainly, Kennedy has "been around politics" all of her life, which is to say she was born into a family of politicos and lived in the White House--neither of which would necessarily f …
Free light rail rides on downtown's above ground section could be derailed thanks to the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority's budget mess. That is the news coming out of a Buffalo Place meeting this morning. Facing a budget shortfall and reduced State operating assistance, the NFTA is scrambling for new revenue sources and is contemplating charging for rides along the lengthy downtown pedestrian mall.
Well it is Christmas time in the city and the NFTA helped put people and especially children into the mood in a very festive and fun way. One of my favorite memories of childhood was taking the train downtown with my grandfather. I would gaze out the windows and watch the tunnel speed by. It always felt like we were going a million miles an hour.
Then there was the ability to stand up and walk around during the ride without the need to be strapped down. It was always a fun time …

I'll pass. I've been to a few events at kitchen - there's no heat, and I don't recall any bathrooms either.

actually there is heat. you can thank the many "drunk hipsters" that actually decided to support us for the last 4 years for that. and there is a bathroom. the giant sign next to it will make it abundantly clear. or, if you are feeling social, it doesn't hurt to ask anyone. buffalo has been very kind to us over the years and its support has gone beyond simply just keeping the building standing. so if you want to pass on this for something a little more passive, no offense taken. but i think the people attending are more interested in the idea of supporting than critiquing the building's bathroom placement or patrons in halloween costumes.

i have no issue with kitchen distribution as a venue...i went to a number of great shows there, and thought it filled a very important niche, and brought some really great out of town bands i might not have been able to see in buffalo otherwise. i certainly wish it was still functional on a regular basis. however, to deny the presence of drunken hipsters at an event titled "hallowasted" held at an art space is like saying there are no punx on custer st.

Kitchen is a really great, unique space; not for everyone, but that's why its so much fun. Always reminded me of the Kamikaze art group that had art/film show parties at a spot on Ellicott downtown. Their 2002 Halloween party was by far the best Halloween party I've ever been to. Maybe this one will rival it. p.s. Kitchen has always had really great posters, and these two don't disappoint. Any idea who designs them?
