KidBiz 2007

Story Options

On Saturday, the Elmwood-Bidwell Farmer's Market is hosting this year’s first installment of KidBiz. This annual event is an opportunity for children to learn about business, as they are responsible for setting up stands and selling their wares.

Kids who participate in the market must rent a four-foot table to display their goods, at a rate of $2 per day. On it, they may feature anything their entrepreneurial young mind can produce. Some goods are homemade (such as artwork or crafts), some used (toys, books), and some of the edible variety. Of course there will be surprises, as these motivated young businessmen and women showcase their creativity.

Buffalo State College’s Small Business Development Center holds an annual class for KidBiz participants, which emphasizes the educational aspects of the market. The free training session, which included third through sixth-graders, taught the children how to serve customers, what start-up costs would amount to, and how much to charge for their items. It also ensures responsibility, as the kids are required to sign a commitment form.

The market will be held (in addition to this Saturday) on July 14 and August 11. It runs from 9 AM- 1 PM. Stop by and support the businesspeople of tomorrow in their quest towards the top! The educational experience of this market may spur a young mind into a long and successful career- and you can be a valuable part of it.

my daughter just can't wait-- one correction though, it starts at 9 not 8. also the kids price their goods so that other kids can afford them with their allowence money - so bring 'em down. it's as fun shopping and looking as it is being a vendor.

    Way to go!!

This combines "new urbanism", healthy eating promotion, local produce production, family values, community-building, & 'capitalism' in a really positive & creative manner.
