Kabab and Curry Express To Open In University District

From Hoss: "Is Kabob and Curry opening at the old Mondo location on Elmwood, or Main? I haven't been to their primary eatery on Transit, but I hear they serve the best Indian food around."
Kabab and Curry will open in about two weeks at the former Mondo Video location... approximately mid-December. I understand that it will be more of a take-out operation than the existing restaurant located on Transit Road. It appears as if the Transit eatery attracts a lot of university students who don't always have adequate modes of transportation to make the haul. Rather than denying the students their Kabab and Curry, the operation opted to open a smaller satellite to accommodate the young clientele. Soon, the University District will have some cheap and good South Asian dishes (with an emphasis on Indian and Pakistani). The satellite location will be much smaller than the Transit eatery, offering fewer dishes - the capacity of the Mondo space will be 22 or 30 customers. From an entry on TravelConsumers.com:
"What makes the trip to Kabab & Curry worthwhile, according to my wife, is their dosas. They look like 24 inch in diameter light tan crisp crepes on which a mixture such as cooked seasoned potatoes are placed. The dosa is then folded and served on a plate. The presentation is beautiful at Kabab and Curry. Over the couple of years that I have been eating at Kabab & Curry I have tried to sample as many items on the menu as possible. I have yet to be disappointed."
Kabab and Curry Express will soon be located at 3268 Main Street.

As we mentioned in our previous post, we’re in the process of changing the Buffalo Rising site. We’re almost there as we expect to launch the new site on Friday, December 19th.
In the meantime, posting will be light as we log new stories in the new publishing system which will only be viewable when we launch on Friday.
As always, we appreciate our users’ patience as we make this transition but we promise it will be well worth it. With faster load times, a comment view …
Caroline Kennedy was in town for a visit with our mayor yesterday. A possible choice to succeed US Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, Kennedy's name has been mentioned along with that of Attorney General Andrew Cuomo (son of former New York Governor Mario Cuomo) and our own Byron Brown, among others.
Certainly, Kennedy has "been around politics" all of her life, which is to say she was born into a family of politicos and lived in the White House--neither of which would necessarily f …
Free light rail rides on downtown's above ground section could be derailed thanks to the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority's budget mess. That is the news coming out of a Buffalo Place meeting this morning. Facing a budget shortfall and reduced State operating assistance, the NFTA is scrambling for new revenue sources and is contemplating charging for rides along the lengthy downtown pedestrian mall.
Well it is Christmas time in the city and the NFTA helped put people and especially children into the mood in a very festive and fun way. One of my favorite memories of childhood was taking the train downtown with my grandfather. I would gaze out the windows and watch the tunnel speed by. It always felt like we were going a million miles an hour.
Then there was the ability to stand up and walk around during the ride without the need to be strapped down. It was always a fun time …

It really sounds like the University District is becoming the next viable community district and really coming into its own. I think thats wonderful!
But Id like to bring something to every business owner and property owner in Buffalo. While Almond Plastic siding and Cranberry shutters atleast look maintained....they still make the property look tacky and low rent. Every property owner and tenant should give thought to upgrading the appearance of their property: Street, Curb, Sidewalk, Trees, Planters, tastefull awnings or small decorative roof overhangs, shingle siding, clean gutters, etc.
I give credit for looking well maintained but curb appeal has alot to be desired.

Great news. University Heights is becoming an extremely diverse neighborhood for eateries. This is right next to Ming's (Chinese) and the new Falafel Bar location is going in right down the street. Couple these additions with existing places like Amy's Place, Just Pizza and the like, and they've got something going.

Can't wait to see some clothing stores open up over here as well and make this another "Hip" area to be besides Elmwood...Time to have more options in this city, and Downtown needs some clothing stores too ...but only if this damn economy will shape up.

Welcome to U Heights. Can't wait. D23 There is an excellent clothing store a few doors away that's been around for 50 years - O'Connell's. B21C - While the upper floor is tacky, the ground level facade is quite interesting.

Don't forget about 99 Fast Food (Vietnamese) over on Bailey! One of my favorites in all of Buffalo. They recently added Bahn Mi to the menu, and they are great.

What a great addition to the Heights and the city as a whole! Buffalo has always lacked quality ethnic Asian restaurants and venues. Part of developing the dynamic synergy that comes with a university neighborhood is a unique and eclectic combination of ethnic eateries and boutiques. See great urban neighborhoods adjacent to the University of Toronto, NYU, GWU, etc. Go Heights!

University Heights has so much potential given it holds a university, is the transit hub of the city/region, and is surely diverse. This neighborhood has a good mix of families and college students. Too bad it is not healthy though. I love this neighborhood but it is in need of attention and seems to be getting it. The University Heights Collaborative does a great job of organizing the residents and getting their voices heard and problems addressed. With some real attention from UB, the city, and the residents, this neighborhood could have a viable future.
It is too bad the plaza where T-Mobile is and where that new place is going in was the built the way it was. If Walgreens was built differently that little stretch could have really been something interesting. I am not sure how much foot traffic from college kids will cross paths to the falafel bar, but I really have no idea it could def work.
I wonder if UB 2020 is starting to have an impact on interest in the Heights. What do you guys think?
