Buffalo Has A New Park

It was only about a year ago when Bill Zimmermann wrote a post about his concerns that the land surrounding the West Side Rowing Club was not open to the public. At that time, there was a foreboding metal fence that prevented anyone from walking near the point that extended out into the channel. This was also before the shovels had broken ground at the Frank Lloyd Wright Fontana Boathouse. He painted a pretty dismal scenario for anyone who would want to discover the art of rowing.
Thankfully, it only took one year to see that scenario completely reverse itself. Now the fence has come down, thus opening up the grass lawn that leads down to the water's edge. And a new boathouse, first drafted by FLW 100 years ago, stands watch over both land and water. To add to the excitement, the Buffalo Rotary Club, an organization that donated $375,000 to the boathouse, recently unveiled a brand new dedication sign. The sign was graciously donated by Ed Hogle’s Atlas Steel Company. The sign signals that the land where the boathouse sits is now called Rotary Park - a place that is no longer considered off limits to the general public. Thanks to the Rotary Club, people now have another waterfront destination that incorporates architecture and health as well as social functions. If you're familiar with the Rotary Club, then you might remember that the group donated the Rotary Rink to The City back in 1991. That rink has become a destination where thousands of people skate at Fountain Plaza every winter.
Eventually, the nondescript road that leads to the grounds of the boathouse will be called Rotary Row. Along with the FLW architecture, and the country's largest rowing club, it is important that the surrounding grounds are maintained and recognized properly. Thanks to the Rotary Club, this section of the waterfront is becoming an important identifiable destination for everyone. It would be great to see some new signage out at the main entrance... it can still be tough to find if you're not familiar with the West Side Rowing Club.

As we mentioned in our previous post, we’re in the process of changing the Buffalo Rising site. We’re almost there as we expect to launch the new site on Friday, December 19th.
In the meantime, posting will be light as we log new stories in the new publishing system which will only be viewable when we launch on Friday.
As always, we appreciate our users’ patience as we make this transition but we promise it will be well worth it. With faster load times, a comment view …
Caroline Kennedy was in town for a visit with our mayor yesterday. A possible choice to succeed US Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, Kennedy's name has been mentioned along with that of Attorney General Andrew Cuomo (son of former New York Governor Mario Cuomo) and our own Byron Brown, among others.
Certainly, Kennedy has "been around politics" all of her life, which is to say she was born into a family of politicos and lived in the White House--neither of which would necessarily f …
Free light rail rides on downtown's above ground section could be derailed thanks to the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority's budget mess. That is the news coming out of a Buffalo Place meeting this morning. Facing a budget shortfall and reduced State operating assistance, the NFTA is scrambling for new revenue sources and is contemplating charging for rides along the lengthy downtown pedestrian mall.
Well it is Christmas time in the city and the NFTA helped put people and especially children into the mood in a very festive and fun way. One of my favorite memories of childhood was taking the train downtown with my grandfather. I would gaze out the windows and watch the tunnel speed by. It always felt like we were going a million miles an hour.
Then there was the ability to stand up and walk around during the ride without the need to be strapped down. It was always a fun time …

What is going on with the adjacent military dumping ground site? I thought that the county made a swap for that land. Why are there military vehicles back over there? It would really be nice to extend this new park at the boathouse all the way over to the CPO Club.

Lasalle Park, take a right before the military campus right after the 190 exit. Across Porter is the wading fountain, another nice little city secret for the summer months.
