Story Options

Do you know how close we came to not having an Artspace project? If you never heard the original story, it was Hillary Clinton who first persuaded the national art-space developer to consider Buffalo. After repeated attempts to bring the developer here, Artspace finally agreed to fly in for a couple of days (only to appease Clinton). Due to Buffalo's unfavorable image throughout the country, it was later learned that the intention was to come in, take a look around, and then take off. But once Artspace party began to look around the city they were amazed at the potential and realized that they had based their assumptions on rumors instead of facts.

By the time Artspace had completed their tour of Buffalo, it was decided that the market was perfect for a project. It was also stated that there were multiple re-use opportunities that should be looked at. In the end it was decided that a re-use was in order... and a new build would accompany the renovation. Since that time we have seen a project go up that's as good as any other Artspace around the country. When cities without an Artspace go to the developer's website, they will see Buffalo listed alongside Houston, Portland, Saint Paul, Minneapolis, Mount Rainier, Bridgeport, Chicago, and Seattle. There are even more Artspaces being built at this time... and some are going up in cities that already have one. The success that has ensued the Buffalo project is a testament this city.

It's hard to imagine that Artspace almost passed us by due to our national image. We should be using this success story to draw like projects to this region. Click here to see the rest of the Artspace projects taking place around the country.

"Hillary Clinton 'persuaded' ArtSpace to come here."

"Buffalo almost lost Artspace due to our 'unfavorable' image"

Its sounds great, but what exactly did Hillary Clinton do to "persuade" Artspace? I would like to know becuase she is could be our next President. Is this your way of campaigning for her? She sucks!

Furthernore, is BRO finally admitting that Buffalo has an "unfavorable national image." In the past, you and many people on this site have said that there is nothing wrong with our national image! Why the change of heart?

Personally, I think Hillary Clinton and Elliot Spitzer are full of shit. Neither one of them cares about Buffalo NY in the very least. Buffalo is a place where they can come to spew out some encouraging words when they are short a few votes.

someone please tell me, what has Hillary Clinton or Spitzer done for this city?

Chris69 - Artspace should be all anyone needs to know. People should definitely support Hillary if they agree with public funding for subsidized nice lofts for artists. Who better than Hillary to grease the skids for that sort of thing?

But to answer your question, Joshua Green in the Atlantic Monthly Nov 2006 suggests her accomplishments are more psychological rather than tangible. His theory is she makes Buffalonains and other Upstate NYers feel important.

...Clinton has used her extra-legislative superpower to help spur the creation of a medical cluster in Syracuse, new defense technology in the state’s Central Corridor, even artists’ lofts in abandoned Buffalo buildings.

When she appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, she requested that the band play “Erie Canal” when she appeared, giving her a musical opening to plug upstate tourism, which she did.

...The quantitative effects of all this are negligible, considering the scope of the problems her state faces: New York has lost 65,000 jobs in the six years she has represented it. But the psychological benefits of her upstate attentions have been tremendous.

It’s as if the prom queen had wandered over unbidden during lunch to insist on sitting with the kids from shop class and asked them to explain drop presses. Clinton never came close to adding 200,000 jobs upstate. Her popularity stems instead from sheer, bludgeoning persistence and an eager willingness to spread her glamour over an area with little of its own. ...

People work cheap here and can really bullshit on the phone. We have enough pizzerias, hair stylists and aspiring school teachers who bartend off Chippewa. Unless you own a collections agency or play for the shitty Sabres, use your computer and locate a better place on Google maps. Happy trails!!

This brings the grand total of positive things that Senator Clinton has brought to WNY in 8 years to: ONE

As a Democrat and resident of WNY, I am embarrassed by her performance. She has done nothing to improve the image of Upstate and Western New York, in fact her actions amount to nothing more than giving a wink to a homely woman. She has been focused on only one thing, herself. She is a miserable failure as a Senator, she has flipped her positions consistently in votes concerning the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and government spending and tax cut legislation. She is concerned only with her image and what is in this for her. In my opinion, she was involved in Artspace just to say that she has done something for the good people of Western New York. Compare her list of achievements to Senators from other states and you will see how little representation we receive from our Senator from Arkansas. In my opinion Senator Schumer isn't much better, and I believe that their bias and negative opinions of the Upstate and Western New York areas are evident in the lack of attention that is paid to these areas. I hope that if Senator Clinton does win the Presidential election, that it will give us the opportunity to elect a true leader to replace her in the Senate.

So, it's the negative national image that has kept Buffalo in the economic outhouse of America for the last 40 years!

Here I was thinking it had something to do with excessive taxation rates, a unionized culture of laziness, overregulation, parochialism, lack of a high quality and educated workforce, corrupt politicians, political machines, an absurd amount of government and a general disregard for new ideas.

BTD, maybe you're in a house that became vacant when an artist moved from it to go live in Artspace. Do you hear sounds outside? Don't worry. It might just be noises from murals being hammered on to beautify the neighborhood. Soon enough some hip tourists are sure to come by. Just holler loud. Looks like some of your comments were erased. While you're mourning your comments, what do you suppose this means - 'The success that has ensued the Buffalo project is a testament this city.'

Not picking on grammar but WTF does it mean? What's the 'success' and what's the 'testament (to) this city'? Her Highness arranged public funding, then somebody used it to built lofts in a former industrial building in a city with a big surplus of housing, then 40 or 50 creative people moved from our other neighborhoods to go live there.

Nice but other than bragging rights for Hillary, Byron, and our artistics, what's any real impact? We trade the vacating of few dozen cheap apartments around the city in return for selling more smokes and sandwiches at that Delta Sonic the cool kids hate anyway because it's not historic? Ok all that's worth 10 million, sure. Oh yeah and that first floor retail space. Won't cost more money down the road to be sure that's not embarrassingly empty, no way.

Artspace had a malfunction and hillary was the one to put the battery's in the VCR remote. Its not much to take credit for! What is really sad is that artspace thinks its specialization is grander then the attraction of this region. The Statler will be filled by Summer, we will be partying on Issa's boat - talking about the anchor tenant he landed from Toronto for 40 story City Tower.

BTD, that's what I was getting at. Bill, Bob and other landlords end up with the tenant market being artificially shrunk by 50 new dwellers of subsidized lofts (to be nice that assumes 10 of the 60 new lofts imported artists from Williamsville or Manhattan - otherwise rental market would shrink by 60 tenants).

50 or 60 tenants isn't huge shrinkage but it must've helped cause boarding up some more houses. How could it not? When population loss or the actual marketplace makes that happen so be it, but to have a political pork project cause it is worse. A 'testament this city' all right.

Just realized them giving Zim treatment to your earlier comments makes some of what I wrote sound strange. Maybe not stranger than usual. As gaustad said it's their blog. Living Forge, I agree. Every time I check this board all I see is complaining complaining and more complaining. To all of you angry people out there.... What have you done for Buffalo? Besides complain about everything and anything that happens to it. If everyone in Buffalo realized the importance of shopping locally instead of running to the mall every time there is a big sale, eating out at local restaurants, instead of the outbacks, applebees oh and the new cheese factory and buying coffee and a local cafe instead of starbucks, then maybe just maybe we could get this economy to turn around. Put money back into Buffalo instead of giving it to the big corporations that give nothing back to Buffalo accept a lousy minimum wage job. Stop blaming someone else for Buffalo's problems and do your part. And most importantly believe in Buffalo. There is so much greatness and history here it's sad that no one else in the country has seen it yet. But in time they will and Buffalo will be back and better than it once was. Buffalo's prevailing poor national image is fueled primarily by the Buffalo Negative News. I have lived in 4 major cities in America and some smaller ones and I have never, ever seen newsprint of the kind seen in the NEWS. It's usually negative and replete with angry writers, (e.g. Donald Esmond in his 1960's faded denim shirt). The Buffalo News writes as if the problems we're having are occurring only here in this city and that everywhere else is all rosy. People all over the world read the Negative News online and form their opinions. Fortunately I have a found a solution: read BUFFALO RISING and READ BUFFALO BUSINESS FIRST and you'll carve out all the shit and just get the facts which is something the NEWS is unable or unwilling to do. And Gaustad, people are laughing at you in your obtuse, uninformed assertions about things but its entertaining if not taken seriously which I doubt your posts ever are.

My first post was kindly requsting the facts, which you say exist on this website...they do not.

"Hillary Clinton "Persuaded" Art space to come to Buffalo"

How? I still do not have and answer, yet you say this is a credible place for information. Did she lobby for it. Is there supporting documentation of lobbying, phone calls, interviews. What did she do and why should i feel fortunated that she even exists in our lives?

You obviously missed the point; Clinton and Spitzer do not give a shit about Buffalo. Therefore, we will not receive any kind of real subsidy to assist our impoversished city. Moreover, they laugh at us behind the scenes like we are the retarded kid in the class......yes they do!

They go back to their Penthouse condos in NYC and laugh about how far behind the curve we are.

Don't be used by Hilary or Spitzer, they could be doing a hell of a lot more for Buffalo. you can throw that nit wit Schumer in there too!

Doc, I have also lived in several major cities. I have found that our "unfavorable image" comes from the fact that people have visited Buffalo for one reason or another and feel that they have entered a time warp. If you were not from Buffalo and walked down Main St or chippewah St., you would laugh at what a ghetto it is, just as the politicians do.

We don't laugh, becuase we love our city, much like a mother loves an ugly child.

As the broker for the sale from Agassiz Holdings to ArtSpace, I can tell you that Hillary Clinton had little to do with this project. She made a phone call, wrote an article to the Buffalo News and obtained $250,000 for the $16 million project. If you want to thank someone for the project, you should thank Tim Wanamaker. He was the one with the friends over at ArtSpace and made the initial calls and arranged a meeting with ArtSpace here.
