Johnson Park Restoration Advancing

According to residents, this park is a focal point for the urban community that surrounds it and has the potential to become a significant amenity for the growing downtown residential population.
The West Village is culturally, economically, and socially diverse. Many lower-income residents depend on this parkland which is in need of an upgrade. The direct area of service includes a demographic of 12,000+ Hispanic persons with 29 percent needing ESL instruction, 39.6 percent living below poverty level, and 27 percent under 21 years of age.
Once restored, the park will provide education opportunities for area children to learn about the history and architecture, as well as botany and other green-environment lessons in a proposed conservatory.
Currently, the West Village Renaissance Group (WVRG) has completed Phase I of the park restoration project including a survey, landscape plans, blueprints and renderings. Funding for Phase I was a mix of grants and private donations.
The group recently received a $5,000 grant from the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo to create fund raising and marketing materials, including a new logo (below). Individual gifts have been received and a successful fundraiser was held at Choco-Logo in February. The WVRG plans to hold additional fund raising events this year. One possibility is an online sales campaign in cooperation with Choco-Logo.
Phase II plans include sod replacement and tree work; new curbs; a running track; enhanced lighting; two children's chalk walks; a meditation labyrinth; doggy stations, bike racks and other essential quality of life amenities. The project is one of the "Final Four" applications being considered for $100,000 in funding under the 21st Century Fund grant program. An award decision is expected in April. If selected, all of the Phase II elements will be constructed. Phase III would see the re-installation of a park fountain surrounded by a 25'x25'x15' Victorian conservatory.
Michael Morga of Peyton-Barlow has volunteered to manage the construction work. The group is working with Dr. James Williams to implement cultural, botanical, historical and geographic education programs that will be available to nearby schools once Phase II is complete.
Engineering students from neighboring Hutch-Tech may assist in the design of the rain cistern system along with wind and solar power for the conservatory. To fund Phase III, the WVRG hopes to sell naming rights for the conservatory.
The WVRG is also working to establish an endowment to assure upkeep of the restored park. Any unspent funds from individual gifts and corporate donations will be placed in a Johnson Park Endowment administered by the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo. The park restoration plan provides a credible and sustainable investment in the West Village, rapidly developing west side of downtown and the city.
All work is expected to be completed in time for the National Trust for Historic Preservation conference in 2011.

So after fireworks and celebrations on Friday and Saturday, some, if not many, Buffalonians will no doubt be hung over and tired. That’s okay. Take Sunday, skip church, and sleep in till the afternoon. Just make sure you’re up and ready to go around 2:30 PM so you can make it on time to Cozumel Grill for Sunday Bloody Sunday.
Between 3 and 6 PM, Cozumel at 153 Elmwood Avenue runs drink specials on Bloody Mary’s and Vodka drinks. A Blood Mary will only cost you $4.50 and a V …
Community Music School of Buffalo (CMS) has been around since 1924 they are always trying to offer new and exciting programs. Last year they had 1,201 student from ages 6 to 86 and beyond (as their tagline declares) and they entertained almost 2,500 in 48 performances. This summer CMS will try and reach more students as they introduce three new classes to their curriculum.
One of the classes will be taught by David Cloyd who recently moved to Buffalo from NYC. Linda Mabry, Execu …
Here's a rerun of a post Steel did two and a half years ago. A building with an already rich history back then, it has even more of a story to tell now. Fortunately, due to the hard work and foresight of a group of neighbors, preservationists, a great lawyer and a developer with the wherewithal and vision to turn an imminent demolition around, one of Steel's favorite buildings has a future too.

Could they advance getting rid of the hostile freaks in Allentown? I know cops in Bflo will NEVER walk a beat but damn, Allen on Fri & Sat nights could sure use a couple.

Simcoe, why do you persist on raining on people's parades? The park is not in Allentown, it is in the West Village south of Allentown where the community there has worked very hard with police and the city to clean up the area. If you want to do something in Allentown, or if you want to report something, call the police station on Main and Tupper and ask to meet with the chief there. She's good to work with and can help on Allen.
Now for the congratulations to a hard working all volunteer group who seems to get things done that most nonprofits with full time staffing can't. This is a great effort and I'm pulling and praying for that grant for you guys.

I can understand the concerns on allen, but I echo righteousguy. I have talked to the police dept before and they are very willing to provide crime information street by street. Do most people believe that the crime information that comes out is accurate? Is there an effort to keep some of it from the public?

Like I said before, sounds like a good story OUTSIDE of this one. These people have done a good job and deserve some handclaps here. To volunteer to mkae education opps for kids and make the space better is amazing. Don't go off the thread, write about it and I'm sure BR will put it on the sight. Let's be courteous to the efforts made on this project. Just a suggestion.

Hey, if it didn't rain the plants wouldn't grow, right? Sorry, didn't know two blocks south of Allen was the "West Village" who came up with that name? And where's the East, South, and North Villages. Anyhow, Righteousbrother you made me feel simply awful, you ruined my whole day. Can you see my tear drops on the screen?

Sorry Simcoe, tears are good for the soul, tho. As far as the West Village, it was there before Allentown and was named before Allentown. Just some info for ya.

What about bringing the 'Fountain' back to this park (right where that huge rock is now. I've seen an old post card showing one that would be very nice to have again.

GDC! But, the fountain IS going to be reinstalled in Phase III, except we're going to cover it with the conservatory so people can enjoy it throughout the year, especially some of the elderly who can sit by it in the Winter while enjoying the warmth of the sun. Why have a fountain that freezes during the cold weather months - that's what the rain cystern, solar and wind power is for, as well.

Good job Marilyn et.al. It's great to see this project going forward for it benefits everyone in the downtown area. WCP - thanks for reporting on the progress that has been made to date.

mmjazz - To answer your questions, if any police dept truly wants to make detailed street-by-street info public as you're saying the Buffalo PD does, they could easily regularly publish it online. The BPD doesn't.
Google 'chicago crime' and you'll see in the top result one good example of what a growing number of cities are doing do to publicly release up-to-date geographically detailed info. I tried incluing that web site address here, but maybe that's why my comment wouldn't post.
There's good examples for others cities too. The BPD wouldn't need a fancy web site for that - just ongoing web-based release of crime report data in some format that others could then display or tabulate.

This is a great project but I felt the need to complain about Allen & the surrounding streets. For every person working to make it a great area there's 100 freaks, panhandlers, and/or people that look like they'd slit my thraot for a buck. Ya I know it's a city but the concentration down there is horrendous.
Atwater-Even if they published reports I'm not sure if I'd trust them the list anything but a fraction of the incidents.

simcoe - I share your lack of trust, but there'd be a way to do it pretty much on the level. There's no doubt inside the BPD, they have all crime reports and all arrest computerized in this day and age. Probably they've had that for many decades now. If a summary of each crime report inluding day, time, location, type of crime, whtehr or not there was an arrest, etc. - was automatically (without anybody deciding yes/no per report) added to a database accessible from the web - then there could always be a little mischief once in a while, but it should be pretty accurate. For sure it'd be much more informative and objective than the 4 or 5 short reports for the whole city that the Buffalo News decides to make room for every day.

The last paragraph of the article especially caught my eye - it's very savvy to use the upcoming national preservation conference as a goal/deadline. Best regards and wishes to all.

Ra-cha-cha, good point, and the one above it that says -also working to establish an endowment to assure upkeep of the restored park. Any unspent funds from individual gifts and corporate donations will be placed in a Johnson Park Endowment administered by the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo.- That can really make or break a project since many wonder what will happen a few years down the line. Will the park really be kept up? The endowment will make that a surety. I also see from their website about the restoration fund that the fund itself is administered by the Community Foundation of Greater Buffalo. That's working smart. It leaves the job to those that have the background and experience. This is a totally credible and sustainable project. I wish them the best for the funding. Amazing what a strong volunteer force can do.

Having attended the reveal of this project this past July, I have also visited the website and paused to think of the amount of research and time/sweat equity this group has done from a ground up platform. I agree with righteous and bcd that this almost grassroots and all volunteer group has done more than many organized and salaried associations. Good for them and good for our city!
I look forward to the completion of the phase that is in competition now. If it is funded, there will be no stopping the final phase of the fountain and education conservatory. And that bodes well for all of WNY.

Ya know, if you want to talk about Allentown, write an article for this sight. This is an article about my neighborhood and the badgering about Allen Street has nothing to do with it. Go ahead, Mariner and Simcoe, use your writing skills and get your point across in a focused article about Allentown.

The above-mentioned rock I truly like. Hope it can stay. Every park should have wonderful rocks: they're wonderful old citizens, older than the trees, the houses, the human nearby dwellers and any park visitors. In fact, I wish the park could have many more... Today driving through the park saw someone working and planting in the circle garden. Gorgeous.
