Jeffrey Spakes Goes Public

I always tell people that Allentown is synonymous with art. In this part of the city you never know what you might find when taking a leisurely stroll down any of side streets. I've posted on 'tree stump to flower planter conversions', we’ve showcased a few of the murals, we've seen live performers walking the streets, and on any given day the sounds of instruments can be heard coming out of residential windows.

Yesterday I briefly stopped to take a look at some of the latest public art that can be found just around the corner from Fiddleheads Restaurant and Café 59 at 486 Franklin Street. As I stood there, staring at the metal works of art, the artist himself walked out of the house and introduced himself. His name is Jeffrey Spakes and he told me that he had just moved to Buffalo recently after living in California for many years. While out west he spent much of his time teaching abused and disadvantaged children the art of cutting and manipulating steel.

He's really big into seeing his metal sculptures change as they come into contact with natural elements (sun, rain and snow). He's planning on showing his work in a more structured environment eventually, but for now he is very happy using his front yard as an open-air gallery. In the yard are butterflies, sculpted faces, and even a metal chair that looks like a lightning bolt. His art is very whimsical… and very cool. Keep a look out for Jeffrey as he starts to make a presence for himself in the local art scene. And if you’re looking for a custom sculpture for your garden, give him a call at 714-464-8379.

Very neat. The city could use a few more Jeffrey's.

Jeffery has become an asset to Allentown in the short time he has lived here, he has cleaned up the corner on his own accord and further enhanced it with his amazing metal work sculpture! I agree, we could use a few more Jeffrey's and a lot less Gaustad's.

The city needs a lot more public art and we need to do a better job of promoting the art that is already in place. I would love to see downtown Buffalo emulate downtown Philadelphia in regard to public sculpture and art.

Look at all those crack heads on the sidewalk behind him!!! You can hardly see the street through them all. How is anyone supposed to be able to look at the sculptures!?!? ;)

I would definitely be in the market. I find that distressed steel's rusty hue is perfect in a garden. It's distinctive but does not overwhelm the plants.

I think this is wonderful! I have known and worked with Jeffrey for years. He is truly and amazing person, with a heart of gold as big as a house. Ask him if you can see his portfolio if you haven't already seen it. He can create beauty out of almost anything. Hello from his friend Ron.
