It's Unanimous -- Buffalo's No. 1

Not to plant a seed of doubt as the Buffalo Sabres try to tie the National Hockey League,Aeos record for consecutive wins at the start a season tonight on Long Island, but this week's survey of power rankings raise a previously unfathomable question:
Might they be getting too much love?
Then again, maybe that's just the knee-jerk reaction of a innate cynic. Everyone else should enjoy it. While it lasts.
The Internet brims with stories of the unbeaten Sabres, the explosiveness of Chris Drury, Maxim Afinogenov and friends and the brilliance of general manager Darcy Regier and coach Lindy Ruff in adapting to the "new NHL."
It's almost too much. Almost.
TSN.ca, which mysteriously had Buffalo spotted fifth a week ago, fairly gushed over its new No. 1.
"It wasn,Aeot enough that the Sabres speed game was working in the new NHL, then they had to have their super-talented wingers Maxim Afinogenov and Thomas Vanek turn into big-time point producers."
As if that weren' enough, the site,Aeos video section teases a new feature thusly: "Buffalo Stampede: James Cybulski heads to Buffalo to find out what makes the best team in the NHL tick."
Scott Wraight of cnnsi.com, who kept Buffalo on top, wonders, "Is there any slowing this train?"
FOX Sports, which arbitrarily dropped the Sabres two spots to No. 3 last week, restored them to the primary spot just as arbitrarily.
And, in what the overly superstitious could consider a blatant jinx, Wes Goldstein of CBS Sportsline uses the dreaded adjective "great" in his praise of top-ranked Buffalo.
Facing an Islanders team led by unjustly exiled coach Ted Nolan and featuring the justifiably banished Miroslav Satan, not to mention longtime blue-line stalwart Alexei Zhitnik, provides more than enough karmic cause for concern as the Sabres flirt with history, without worrying about the impact of getting too much respect.

Help catch a cure for Cystic Fibrosis by taking part in this year's BassEye Celebrity Challenge. The two-day event, taking place tonight and tomorrow in the NFTA Boat Harbor, is sure to be a great time for all involved.

This Independence Day marks the Seventh Annual Cobblestone Criterium Classic bike race! Each July 4th, cyclists come from all over our region, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Canada to participate. This year, they'll be competing for more than $2,000 in cash and prizes.
"In European races, there's always a cobblestone segment," said Jim Costello, owner of Handlebars Cycling Company, which sponsors the event. Seven years ago, he recognized something unique in the Cobblestone District. …
To be honest, I went out Wednesday night planning to chronicle the last night of this hockey season in Buffalo.
After the way Ottawa crushed the Sabres in Monday night’s third game of the Eastern Conference Finals, physically and spiritually, in perhaps the most one-sided 1-0 game ever played in any sport, the logical conclusion was that Buffalo’s seven-month run as the new glamour team of the National Hockey League was in its death throes.
Teams come back from 3-0 deficits …
Shows how much I know.
Last week’s preview of the Eastern Conference Finals between the Buffalo Sabres and the Ottawa Senators was rife with wisecracks about John Muckler, Ray Emery, Daniel Alfredsson and even the Roman Senate.
All wrong, as it turns out, with the possible exception of the bit about the machismo exhibited by ancient Rome’s legislative body.
I was not, however, the only one in these parts who badly underestimated Ottawa, judging from Buffalo’s performance …
