It's a beautiful night for roofing.
Despite being one of the best summer's ever for working outside on my house, as with every year, I find myself racing to finish up all the projects I started during the summer before the fall rain sets in. I've been spending all my final dry days finishing up as much painting as I can, but after hearing it was going to thunderstorm on Sunday I decided to finish putting a new roof on my garage on Saturday. I worked hard on it all day but I still had a few hours worth of work to do by nightfall so I took out the spotlights (something I have a bit of a reputation for) and kept up the hammering until I was finished around 10:00.
Neighbors stopped by and handed up roofing shingles and the weather couldn't have been better - it was still in the upper 60's when I finished at 10:00. You can't beat Buffalo summers (especially those that keep going right into fall). In the dead of this winter I'm going to look up at this roof and remember the nice warm November night I built it.
Anyone else stealing time on their summer projects?

Harvey, sorry I'm not a Gorilla Roofer - too afraid of heights! But, good going, Guy! My end of summer project was spent cutting down all the flowers and ornamental grasses, along with putting the pond and waterfall to bed.
Fortunately, like you, I have some wonderful neighbors who took time out of their busy schedules to assist me. I guess that's the reason for this posting - to reinforce that we are truly the City of Good Neighbors. For my project - thanks to Becca, Tim and Louise!
Now it's on to painting the rear bedroom - still great weather here in Buffalo - enough to keep the window open and let the paint fumes out!
By the way, if anyone wishes to participate - our Johnson Park Leaf-A-Thon is this coming Saturday - Nov 12 - from 9 am to the end (est time 12:30). We're starting out with sugar rushes - Coffee and donuts, and ending with Chili and mulled cider (we'll have Bailey's available for the coffee and some spiking for the cider, as well).

I wish I had as much energy as you both, I was happy to get the picnic table and yard supplies in the shed, I did manage to put plastic up on a few windows so I guess it was a productive weekend after all.

My wits are long gone - all I have left is my night vision and a keen sense of balance - I'll make a swell cat burglar some day.
I have a few hours this afternoon that I'm going to steal away from my office to replace some clapboards and glass panes in a few windows (original wavey glass that I rescued from some discarded old windows I found on the curb). Old Buffalo houses still mesmerize me.
I love the fall in Buffalo. Not too cold, not too hot. Beautifull golden / red aura around all the trees. Light wind. The smell of the occasionally snuck leaf fires and the hammering and power saw sounds of the neighborhoods finishing up their last few house projects.
This has been one of the best summer / fall seasons in years for neighborhood construction noises on the West Side. It's my favorite sign of neighborhood progress to see new roofs going up, old plastic siding being pulled off, and more & more houses where boards are coming off and new families are moving in.
I can't imagine living someplace where the seasons never change - or there isn't a constant sense of progress in your neighborhoods.
