Ink, Metal and Philosophy at Cowpok

Story Options

Valentine's day: An occasion to proclaim true love for a special someone. But don't have anyone's name drawn on yourself permanently. It's a deal breaker according to Cooper, resident tattoo artist at Cowpok.

Cooper (pictured at right) said that the act of having another's name tattooed on is "jumping the shark" in a relationship, meaning it signals the end. “It’s something people seem to do when something is already rotten in Denmark, if you know what I mean”, he says. “Like, here…I love you so much I’m gonna’ have your name tattooed. But it just makes the other person uncomfortable.”

Cooper is one of those people who is full of knowledge about all sorts of things. A self-admitted pop culture wonk, he has an enormous base of facts and interesting philosophies, making even the longest tattoo session worthwhile.

Keith Krollman (left), the owner of Cowpok, does all the piercing. He has a lot of tattoos himself and a slightly devilish personality, but it's all in fun.

Valentines day at Cowpok? Sure. Go for a heart, piercings, whatever...but stay away from the name thing. Not only will it bum-out your current love interest, but it's also a downer for everyone you subsequently date (whose name it is not).

In a twist of irony another local tattoo shop was advertising in artvoice this week... $5 off when you get a name tattoo covered up with a different name in honor of the holiday.

To think, I believed romance was long dead!

(and yeah, every occasion where my SO has said "hey, I might get your name tattooed on me!" I was already contemplating ending things.)

My daughter proudly showed me her tattoo, my response,----- people were tattooed in Europe also,---- just prior to going to the stockades, -----in prisons, I heard that tattoos were a form of gang affiliation ---- are you going to be locked up soon.

I was lucky... my parents found out about my tattoos when I was in ICU after being hit by a drunk driver. They didn't have it in them to yell at me at the time.
