In Case You Missed It… Brush Up Buffalo 2008

This past weekend, amidst the packed beginning of “festival season” around Western New York (e.g., Allentown Art Festival, Juneteenth Festival, Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure), more than 500 volunteers reminded residents of the Lovejoy neighborhood why Buffalo is called the “City of Good Neighbors.”
In a matter of about four hours on Saturday morning—despite intermittent rain—volunteers with Brush Up Buffalo repainted 14 homes and the Iron Island Museum. Most of the homeowners were elderly and disabled, and some hadn’t even been outside their homes in months. But even a hidden sun couldn’t stop them from feeling like their day was brightened.
Brush Up Buffalo celebrated its 12th event since 1996, held typically every June on the Saturday before Father’s Day. After this past weekend’s event, the organization now stakes its claim to revitalizing more than 235 homes throughout Buffalo.
This year’s event included a few historic and fun twists. First, the staging area—the Central Terminal—was a new site. Volunteers congregated there between 7:15 and 8:15 a.m. before being bused to Lovejoy, directly two miles east.
Volunteers returned between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. for another new treat: catered Chiavetta’s chicken for lunch (as opposed to the usual hot dogs and hamburgers).
Finally, but certainly not least, this year’s homes surrounded P.S. #43 Lovejoy Discovery School, which is currently undergoing reconstruction. The opportunity to truly revitalize a neighborhood was a key factor for gaining sponsorship and logistical support from LPCiminelli, the company overseeing the reconstruction efforts. (The list of all sponsors is available at http://www.brushupbuffalo.org/content/pages/sponsors-and-donors.)
And without the year-round support of Brush Up Buffalo’s steering committee—about a dozen individuals and growing—the event might not be possible. The event is a one-day affair that takes careful planning and more than $25,000 raised in sponsorship dollars and in-kind support.
But most importantly, the reason Brush Up Buffalo 2008 was so successful and so much fun was because of the volunteers. Western New Yorkers from all walks of life—young, old, city dwellers, suburbanites, paint pros, paint novices—all came together for a common goal. And 14 homeowners and the Iron Island Museum now share some added pride with their fellow Lovejoy neighbors.
Brush Up Buffalo 2009 is tentatively scheduled for June 20, 2009. But despite having to wait more than 365 days for the next event, new sponsors and steering committee members are welcome anytime—call 250-3353 to leave a message.

As we mentioned in our previous post, we’re in the process of changing the Buffalo Rising site. We’re almost there as we expect to launch the new site on Friday, December 19th.
In the meantime, posting will be light as we log new stories in the new publishing system which will only be viewable when we launch on Friday.
As always, we appreciate our users’ patience as we make this transition but we promise it will be well worth it. With faster load times, a comment view …
Caroline Kennedy was in town for a visit with our mayor yesterday. A possible choice to succeed US Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, Kennedy's name has been mentioned along with that of Attorney General Andrew Cuomo (son of former New York Governor Mario Cuomo) and our own Byron Brown, among others.
Certainly, Kennedy has "been around politics" all of her life, which is to say she was born into a family of politicos and lived in the White House--neither of which would necessarily f …
Free light rail rides on downtown's above ground section could be derailed thanks to the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority's budget mess. That is the news coming out of a Buffalo Place meeting this morning. Facing a budget shortfall and reduced State operating assistance, the NFTA is scrambling for new revenue sources and is contemplating charging for rides along the lengthy downtown pedestrian mall.
Well it is Christmas time in the city and the NFTA helped put people and especially children into the mood in a very festive and fun way. One of my favorite memories of childhood was taking the train downtown with my grandfather. I would gaze out the windows and watch the tunnel speed by. It always felt like we were going a million miles an hour.
Then there was the ability to stand up and walk around during the ride without the need to be strapped down. It was always a fun time …

I had a great time this year, Tony, and I know our teams at least were already talking about next year before we were even finished. 365 days, you say? I don't know if I can make it that long.

This was awesome and the rain made it even more memorable! :-) I can't wait to do it all again next year, and the year after, and the year after that, and so on! Do you know the neighborhood for next year? When can we start signing up?
