I Spy...

I guess it all depends on whom you talk to when it comes to the type of winter that we had this year. Some people will tell you that there wasn't enough snow while others will say that we had plenty for their liking. Personally, I look back and think that we only had a handful of days when the snow accumulated enough to break out a shovel. That's why I really enjoyed this weekend. When I look outside and see the drifts I think about all of the heavy winters that I enjoyed as a kid. Instead of hiding out in their homes yesterday, people really took advantage of the storm.

I snapped a couple of memorable shots yesterday of a couple guys making the most of the weather. When I asked the guy on the four-wheeler to smile, he shouted, "Hey!" It was an old friend (Phil) who I had not seen in a long time. I asked him if his ride was street legal, and he just smiled. Then I passed this guy who was riding his bike and toting around a shovel. Of course he was beating the traffic down Elmwood Avenue. I felt like I was playing one of those 'I Spy" games... "Spot a guy riding a bike during a snowstorm while carrying a shovel for 50 points." As far as I'm concerned this storm was the perfect way to say goodbye to winter (soon enough).

when I was a kid my friends and I used to go throughout the city and ski down all the big snow piles, made for some nice shots with the downtown buildings in the background.

When I was a kid my friends and I used to go throughout the city and ski down all the big snow piles, made for some nice shots with the downtown buildings in the background. We'd even build ski jumps on Cary Street and get towed in by Car, landing in a neighbors front yard. It was the best!

This was a great storm because the Weather Channel paid us a visit. They broadcasted live in front of millions of americans the past few days to encourage the reputation of Buffalo on the snowy side. Though not lake-effect, it still was large enough for Mike Siedelle (somethin like that) to fly in to Buffalo with the weather channel team and drive onto the 14 inch thick ice of lake erie. He was surprisingly pretty far out on the lake. When he went live (he went live like 15 times) it was night on Lake Erie. He discussed how much snow, etc we were to get, BUT! He also talked of some of the pond hockey that went on right behind him, as well as showing the skyline in the live talk. They also showed video clips from before of the metro rail, people walkin and cars rumblin all over Buffalo. It was great to see our buildings, people, weather, and transportation being so talked about as many other americans watched. This is a time when you like when Buffalo gets snow, when it encourages out of town media to pay us a visit and not only talk of weather, but the best snow and ice removal system in the country at the BNIA airport. He also ate at local restaurants, went live to Delaware Avenue downtown during the day, and as his flight was cancelled, he added that he would be staying for a few more days enjoying the great food. I love it when this happens. Sorry for this long boring comment, but i had to share with someone. Did anyone else catch any of this on TWC?

I think it was best snow fall we have had all winter. It will all be melted by the end of the week anyway. Every storm that the weather people tried to predict this season never seemed to have fully materialized. I really like the snow in Buffalo and a good snow storm is great! (I await my numerous one-star ratings for this comment!) Snow is far better than wondering where the pieces of my house landed because of a Tornado. I'll take snow any day!

The Weather Channel in Buffalo? When did Buffalo become a suburb of Atlanta?

How that guy is riding his bike with a shovel is beyond me, i gave up riding in the snow long ago. God i hate NY state and our excessively high gas taxes.

I don't mind the gas tax since it means that less money needs to come out of property taxes for highway construction and maintenance. Put the costs of the roadway on the users that do the most damage to them since roads cater mostly to the automobile these days I think it is only fair. maybe if Justin's Complete streets program was implemented you could argue about a better distribution of the maintenance costs but until people get equal access to the roads the tax effectively puts 'some' of the costs on the shoulders the heaviest and most destructive users of the roads. Automobiles. Then again I would wonder how much it costs for road maintenance vs income from gas tax.

Oh and BTW, the link that Joshua put there for the weather channel in Buffalo was only one time they checked in with Mike. They did other times as he also went to Delaware Avenue and showed skyline, city life, etc. Just in case anyone was wonderin, in which i highly doubt. This very well could be the last comment EVER on this page! =)
