I Love Ming Cafe
I never thought that I would ever crave Chinese food. If it were not for Ming Cafe in the University District I don't know if I ever actually ever would. Last night we had one of the most incredible meals of all time: 1. Crispy beef with ginger garlic sauce and scallions tossed in rice wine and Peking sweet vinegar sauce. 2. Orange peel chicken with chili peppers and honey. 3. Stir-fry Shanghai thick noodles with pork. I don't even know which of the dishes was the best... all I can say is, "If you have not experienced the Chinese home cooking at Ming Cafe... what can I say, this food is simply the tastiest food around.
And it just keeps getting better. Every meal I have eaten at Ming has been purely magical. The owners, Sam and Helen, are two of the nicest people you would ever want to meet. Their commitment to their work is also what makes this eating experience so incredible. Each meal can be ordered to your liking (hot, medium or mild), but be warned, if you order 'hot', one word of advice is to ask Helen which peppers will make your eyes water... just so you can prepare yourself. Each dish is prepared from scratch, and every bite you take will revolutionize the way you feel towards Chinese food. Many people drive by Ming Cafe and assume that it is simply a teahouse. Wrong! They serve up some tantalizing teas, however it is the food that keeps me coming back.
There is a heap of construction going on in that stretch of Main Street. Please don't let that stop you from swinging by to try their gourmet food. Ming is open for lunch and dinners. Unfortunately, the couple will be leaving soon for two months to visit friends and family in Hong Kong. They make the trip every year, which is great for them and not so great for us. They plan on closing down for the summer on June 17th and will re-open on Labor Day. If you want to taste what you have been missing, then by all means head on over to get yourself a delectable meal at Ming.
Ming Cafe is located at 3268 Main Street across from the University of Buffalo South Campus. They don't deliver, but you can order to pick up at 716-833-6988.

Watch out, fellow devotees of Ming. Currently they're only open "summer hours" -- from 5pm to 9pm. My friends and I wanted lunch there today and had to 'settle' for Thai food out on NF Boulevard.

Ming is the hands down the best Chinese I've ever had. It is the only Chinese food I will eat in Buffalo. They have a load of amazing vegetarian options, including fabulous tofu dumplings and crispy tofu stir fry. Also, a note to readers: They do not take credit cards.

Without a doubt one of the finest Chinese restaurants I have ever experienced. I hope they will be able to develop a loyal following given their somewhat out of the way location. This place would absolutely rock if it was located on Elmwood.
What a shame that they'll be gone for the summer!

ebflo - Stop being so close-minded. I think it absolutely rocks that Ming's isn't located on Elmwood. It's great to have destinations throughout the city.

Ming Cafe is fine where it is...the real shame is that Edritos isn't on Elmwood anymore...haven't been to the new one yet because of the inconvenience....is it even open on the weekend?

Ming rocks out. The pan-seared Mongolian beef dish is excellent. I was highly skeptical of "good" Chinese, which seems to often mean more pork in your fried rice or extra crispy egg rolls; Ming is the only Chinese I've had that I totally dig outside of home-cooked.

You should also try Shango & Vado Pazzo, both are a treat to have in the neighborhood along with Ming's!

Buffalorox: Of course it's great to have restaurant options throughout the city -- I actually live around the corner from Ming and it's far more convenient for me than Elmwood. I'm simply concerned that they won't make it and we'll have lost a fabulous restaurant. There have been plenty of evenings when I've gone into Ming and it's been pretty quiet...

ebflo,
I wouldn't necessarily translate a move to Elmwood as a means to success. University Heights, North Buffalo and Eggertsville/Snyder likely have as much disposable income as that surrounding Elmwood (plus the rent has to be much less than it would be on either Elmwood or Hertel). I think success is predicated on Ming's ability to get the word out and the revitalization of the University Heights Business District. Shango & Vado Pazo (along with stalwarts like the Steer and Lake Effect Diner) are a step in the right direction. May Jen and King and I (old Harlem Road location) have/had a great deal of support in Snyder. There are so few good restaurants in Snyder that University Heights could become a natural destination for Snyder (as it once was).
