I love Buffalo's four seasons

Hoyt Lake We went to the zoo today because my three-year old daughter was on a mission for a "few more rides on the merry go round before they put it away, Mommy!" I'm not sure exactly when zoo staff stow it for the fall/winter, but I know it made her day that it was still available today.

Our visit got me thinking about all the things that people are desperate to do during the last few calendar days of summer. Although many of our favorite summer attractions remain available throughout the year, the fact that we associate them with sunny days means that we tend to put them aside when temperatures drop.

But -- the zoo's open all year. The absence of the merry go round will be a momentary disappointment (if I'm lucky -- and a tantrum if I'm not), then she'll be skipping off to see her next "best friend" among the zoo's inhabitants. Hoyt Lake and other parts of Delaware Park remain available for year-round enjoyment, too. Instead of picnicking in the shadow of the rose garden, try a leaf walk in the fall or go cross country skiing in the winter.

The steps at the Albright Knox Art Gallery are one of my favorite spots in Buffalo any time of year. In the summer, they're a great spot to rest on my walk, but in the winter, they're a great spot from which to view the beauty of a frozen Delaware Park. In the fall, they can't be beat: the best seat in the city for the show that is Delaware Park's golden autumnal glory. Nothing better!

I'd love to hear your thoughts about attractions, like these, that people might associate with summer and how you celebrate them in other parts of the year.
