Hot off the press!

The Buffalo Niagara 2006 Official Visitors Guide is hot off the press and poised to spread the good word about Buffalo, Niagara Falls and all of Western New York. Featuring a killer illustration of the Darwin Martin House by local artist and illustrator Mike Gelen (you've seen his work for years on the Irish Classical Theatre Company posters), the Visitors Guide provides tourists with a comprehensive overview of all there is to see and do in our region.
This year's guide uses the occasion of the re-construction of the Martin House Complex to tell the story of Buffalo's wealth of amazing architecture and promote Buffalo as a great, undiscovered cultural destination. You'll find stories about the Righteous Babe restoration of the Asbury Delaware Church and Hallwalls move downtown, East Aurora's appeal as a quintessentially American small town, the development of the Michigan Avenue Heritage Corridor, our amazingly varied outdoor recreation opportunities (including some of the best fishing in North America), cool annual traditions like the Allentown Art Festival, Shakespeare in Delaware Park and the Garden Walk, and much, much more.
Stop by the Visitor Center in the Market Arcade building downtown (617 Main Street near Chippewa) and pick up a copy or two for your out-of-town friends and family. Tell 'em it's a great year to visit Buffalo!

Ever since the Falafel Bar opened on Allen Street, it was only a matter of time before the Elmwood location was no longer for this world. I spoke to owner, Oded Rauvenpoor, who told me that the decision to close came when he was at a crossroads. He found himself happy with his Allentown diggs, but began eying another part of the city for the Elmwood restaurant. In the end, Oded decided that he wanted to try his hand in the University District (3476 Main Street). I guess there was …
Now that it has passed, the question is how does the “Bicycle Commuter Tax Act” affect me as an employer or employee on a daily basis.
During a time where healthy, environmentally sustainable and community friendly transportation options are more and more looked at as an effective way to encourage energy efficiency, to improve public health, to prevent congestion, to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions and to improve community livability and safety, this is an essential step …
Celebrating the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural Site’s Victorian Christmas - Away from Home:
As the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural Site completes their restoration work, they’ll be continuing with their annual Victorian Christmas traditions at offsite locations throughout the region.
So why not try a new way to celebrate the holiday with friends? Friday December 5th, the T.R. Site will be hosting a Wine and Beer sampling at the Central Library. This year, Fables Café will be …
This morning, Barack Obama officially announced Senator Hillary Clinton will be nominated to serve as Secretary of State in the new administration. Assuming Senator Clinton is approved by the Senate for the cabinet position, Governor Paterson will appoint someone to fill her seat.
And so the speculation has begun.
Some of the potential appointees include Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez, Congresswoman Nita Lowey, Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, Caroline Kennedy, Congressman Bri …

I had already seen the graphic, together with the line: "We're not trying to build Buffalo up. Frank Lloyd Wright, Louis Sullivan, and H.H. Richardson already did that." in the current issue of the National Trust for Historic Preservation's magazine in a 1/3rd page ad.
This marks significant progress. As recently as three or four years ago there was a multi-page ad supplement to the magazine selling New York State as a cultural tourism destination WITHOUT any representation from Buffalo.
Kudos to Ed and his colleagues for changing all that.

Mike Gelen is very talented. Besides being a designer for the Irish Classical Theater, he did the posters for the Olmsted Parks.
