Hop On The Russert Highway Then Hang A Right

Pretty soon, when headed to a Buffalo Bills game you’ll want to take the Timothy J. Russert Highway to get there. Senators Charles Schumer and Hillary Clinton and Congressman Brian Higgins introduced a resolution today to rename the stretch of highway that runs by Ralph Wilson Stadium. US Route 20a between Abbot Road and California Road would be named after the Meet The Press moderator.
You can view a copy of the resolution here.
From the press release:
“Though he redefined Washington for generations to come, Tim Russert was always—to his very core—Mr. Buffalo,” said Schumer. “He was a shining example of the very best in Western New York—a down-to-earth, family man with rock solid values and an irreplaceable twinkle in his eye. He always cared about the Bills, and whenever I went on Meet The Press, we’d spend a few minutes before or after the show talking about the team. By naming this portion of Route 20a in his honor, we hope that Tim Russert will never be far from the home he loved so dearly.”
“Tim Russert was loved and respected throughout the halls of Washington for his journalistic integrity and trademark tenacity – but during all of his years in D.C. he remained a true Buffalonian at heart,” said Senator Clinton. “Some people may not have understood why he would sign off of a hard-hitting political talk show with a hearty ‘Go Bills,’ but if you knew Tim you knew it made perfect sense. I hope that by renaming this stretch of Route 20a near Ralph Wilson Stadium in Tim’s honor, that it will in some way bring him closer to the city and team he loved so much.”
“Whether it was talking about growing up in South Buffalo in his books or using the NBC bully pulpit to cheer on the Bills before a big game, to many, Buffalo helped define who Tim was. Buffalo was always in Tim’s heart and Tim will always live on in the hearts of Western New Yorkers. It’s only fitting that from now on, Bills fans driving down “Timothy J. Russert Highway” will always reminded of this hometown hero and personification of the 12th man.”
“The proposal to rename the stretch of U.S. Route 20a that runs next to the stadium in honor of Tim Russert is a wonderful tribute to a great man. I want to thank Senator Clinton, Senator Schumer and Congressman Higgins for their efforts to make this happen. I, like many others, was shocked when I heard the sad news of Tim’s passing. We loved Tim and he loved Buffalo and the Bills,” said Buffalo Bills owner Ralph Wilson, Jr.

At an after school program recently, some kids were doing homework, some were on computers and some were in the gym. But a small group of fourth-graders were designing and building boats out of household products- plastic cups, construction paper, and tape. They had been building and modifying their boats throughout the week, trying a few different design and construction plans. Now they were ready to race them across a tub of water, using a fan to power them across. After deal …
Larry Griffis III is a well-known Buffalo figure whose experience with steel is not only his passion, but his birthright. Some may know of his father’s sculpture park in South Buffalo, founded in the 60s, but his son has taken up the torch and is now a world-renowned sculpture. What started with the father has continued with the son. Griffis III’s work is starting to appear in spots in Buffalo and now, to see one of his works, you need look no further than Forest Lawn Chapel.

Though they only began in 2002, the 18-person Vocalis Chamber Choir have already made a name for themselves. Vocalis’ first CD was praised by the Buffalo News, is played regularly on WNED-FM, and they perform regularly through WNY, Toronto, and Pittsburgh. Their 2008-2009 season, which only includes eight or nine performances in WNY, will begin at Karpeles Manuscript Museum with their holiday concert dubbed, “Christmas at the Karpeles.”

Ever since the Falafel Bar opened on Allen Street, it was only a matter of time before the Elmwood location was no longer for this world. I spoke to owner, Oded Rauvenpoor, who told me that the decision to close came when he was at a crossroads. He found himself happy with his Allentown diggs, but began eying another part of the city for the Elmwood restaurant. In the end, Oded decided that he wanted to try his hand in the University District (3476 Main Street). I guess there was …

Nothing against a great man but renaming roads in honor of people or adding honorary road names only makes things more confusing. Look at Michigan Ave or is it Harriet Tubman Way on Google Maps. it tells you to make a right on Harriet Tubman way in directions but when you are actually driving around you will be lucky to see the secondary sign saying that and probably will just drive past what you think it the wrong street and get lost.
If we want to memorialize people why not a gate to the stadium, a statue on the street, a public square.. hell maybe even a school but messing with road names and adding another layer of confusion to the mix is misguided, in my opinion.

I am kinda in the same boat as Sbrof.
With all of the street names in Buffalo named after people who nobody knows, is naming a street good enough for Russert? Besides what if the Bills move, either to downtown or out of town....
I think a better idea would be to name the traffic circle in South Buffalo after him. Maybe a monument honoring the Blue Collar workers of the last century. Or some monument that symbolizes discussion or transparency.
Something like this is more fitting IMO.

bc71- Ralph isnt that unselfish. Even though he lives in Detroit, he is trying and has done alot in the past to keep the team here. I know they have been talking about naming DunnTire Park after Tim kinda like Tim Russert field at Dunn Tire Park

A road name is an ok idea, but what usually happens if a road already has a name is people just naturally keep using the current name (in this case, that part or Route 20a is Southwestern Blvd).
I like what hashma suggested a few days ago:

I was listening to my Toronto radio station when they broke the news and I nearly fell over (I was driving mind you). What a lose to the political world, to Buffalo, to the country. I do have one idea though for a memorial---why not rename the airport the Tim Russert International Airport---I mean i think it would be the right idea and he would be remembered every time one flies in and out.

We should brag and beat the fact to death that this guy was from buffalo and loved it.
Put his name or a statue of him in the most visible place possible.
Top of the Peace Bridge, smack in the middle of the falls ,airport, expressway thru the city, top of a bldg.
Neon lights around city hall. Whatever. Great man.

Any and all tributes to Tim Russert will be appreciated by me. I have not met/heard of any other nationally known figure who wrote a book about his own father AND ended their television show with words like "Luke I am happy to be your dad", AND bragged about their home town, AND after interviewing world renowned figures Shamelessly pluged their home team over and over again with "Go Bills". What a rare and special person!

I like this idea. I think it fits our greatest ambassador much better. I also like petitioning to have one of the presidential debates held at Canisus. Given how much he loved politics and Buffalo, I think it would be fitting to combine his two loves.

Pundit has the right idea. An airport is the perfect way to honor Tim Russert. It is prestigious and will carry the name and the legacy of Tim on in the minds of everyone who comes and goes from Buffalo. Sign the petition everyone.

Definitely a new UB 2020 building should be named after him. Russert Hall perhaps?
