Holding On To Number Three

It's no surprise to anyone that we have had some serious struggles when it comes to our sports teams. Just take a look at some of the groups on Facebook. One quick search pulls up a variety of groups that are overly despondent when it comes to our pro teams. Here are a few (blanket sic):
1) Why do pro buffalo sports teams always find a way to get screwed? 2) Why am I a Buffalo sports fan? 3) buffalo sports will never win a championship 4) Buffalo Sports Curse 5) yeah, I've had my heart broken by a Buffalo pro-sports team... 6) God Really Hates The Buffalo Sports Teams 7) Being a Buffalo sports fan is heartbreaking.... 8) As a Buffalo Sports fan I've been Blue Balled more times than any one 9) Hopefully by 2015 Buffalo will have a Championship Sports team 10) I am a Buffalo Sports Fan as Much as I Hate to Admitt It 11) Buffalo Sports are hopeless. 12) Buffalo is the most Dissappointing Sports City EVER!!!
Those groups were pulled from just two pages of search results... and the only key words that I used were 'Buffalo Sports'. So it should come as no surprise that Forbes has just ranked Buffalo as number three when it comes to America's 10 Most Miserable Sports Cities. Thankfully Seattle, Wash. (#2) and Atlanta, Ga. (#1) eked us out for the top two slots. And with the Sabres out of the playoffs, there appears to be no immediate hope of any sort of redemption. At least we still have a strong fan base for our pro teams... now if we could just hold on to the Bills (that loss would catapult us to number one over night). Oh, and keep bragging about our art scene.

As we mentioned in our previous post, we’re in the process of changing the Buffalo Rising site. We’re almost there as we expect to launch the new site on Friday, December 19th.
In the meantime, posting will be light as we log new stories in the new publishing system which will only be viewable when we launch on Friday.
As always, we appreciate our users’ patience as we make this transition but we promise it will be well worth it. With faster load times, a comment view …
Caroline Kennedy was in town for a visit with our mayor yesterday. A possible choice to succeed US Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, Kennedy's name has been mentioned along with that of Attorney General Andrew Cuomo (son of former New York Governor Mario Cuomo) and our own Byron Brown, among others.
Certainly, Kennedy has "been around politics" all of her life, which is to say she was born into a family of politicos and lived in the White House--neither of which would necessarily f …
Free light rail rides on downtown's above ground section could be derailed thanks to the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority's budget mess. That is the news coming out of a Buffalo Place meeting this morning. Facing a budget shortfall and reduced State operating assistance, the NFTA is scrambling for new revenue sources and is contemplating charging for rides along the lengthy downtown pedestrian mall.
Well it is Christmas time in the city and the NFTA helped put people and especially children into the mood in a very festive and fun way. One of my favorite memories of childhood was taking the train downtown with my grandfather. I would gaze out the windows and watch the tunnel speed by. It always felt like we were going a million miles an hour.
Then there was the ability to stand up and walk around during the ride without the need to be strapped down. It was always a fun time …

Forbes is looking at this from the wrong angle because the most miserable sports cities are those without professional sports franchises. There is a risk with having your city and reputation associated with a professional sports team, we have to recognize that burden and takes steps to improve it. We are insecure about the future of our teams in Buffalo because we know that there is a long list of cities who are waiting in line to buy a pro franchise. To me the list of pathetic sports cities are those that have to live vicariously off other cities and their teams, followed by those with professional teams that are unable to fill seats. Take a look at any professional baseball stadium during the regular season, more than a third of the seats are empty, same with hockey and football stadiums. The Bills and Sabres do a good job of filling seats, especially when they are winning. I think that we have a good base of very passionate fans who are patiently waiting for us to finally make the right moves to win a championship. Keep the coaching staff for the Bills intact for a few seasons, sign some franchise players, and we will see our reputation improve with other cities. I think that one of our local problems with the Bills and Sabres is that we hold our collective esteem in their success or failure. We need to get past that, build esteem from the tangible elements of Buffalo, and work together to sell this to the rest of the world. Living in DC, I found that almost no one cared about the Redskins, Caps, and Nationals.

First of all, Atlanta has The Braves in baseball, I believe they are in the thick of things every year and have a few World Series wins during thier stint in Atlanta.
I think the most dissapointment I have felt in a Buffalo team was this years' Sabres. This was so avoidable had the Sabre's owner and management decided to invest in their team and players the same way the people of Buffalo invested in their team and players. Sabre management and owner were swooping up season ticket holders at God fosaken prices.
This was a complete rip off for the people who thought the team was going to be invested in if they invested in the team. Kind of like Enron emplyees (to a small extent)...

This type of article is the lowest form of "journalism" and ranks even lower than a "People" exclusive on the size of Rosie O'Donnell's ass dimples. With all of the things going on in world of finance and business I am left wondering how this article made it to press and what Andrew Farrell and Tom Van Riper did to piss off the Editor in Chief so much that they were assigned to re-write this regurgitated bullshit?

Sabres and Bills are always competitive, just not at the same times, but we always have hope and something to root for.
I consider that better than having nothing at all.
The AFL titles have to count for something.....

I think the #3 ranking is perfect - our sports teams can't even take 1st place in THAT.

Grow up Einstein. Nice to see something other than the same "regurgitated bullshit" business and finance stories about mortgages, and the economy etc. Relax buddy. Its just one story. You'll live.
The sports in this town, professional, semi-professional, and recreational are one of the reasons I love Buffalo. Successful or not its always fun to check out a few games every year. We'll get there one day. And when we do Einstein; your not allowed to come to the parade. Let's go Buff-a-lo.

Seattle is so screwed. Imagine your basketball team moving to Oklahoma City and your overpaid baseball team a perpetual also-ran. The Seahawks came so close to that brass ring and then... Yeah, Buffalo is all twisted up with the flailing Sabres and the 0-4 Bills but that's just because Buffalo's been beat up. Red Sox fans felt the same way until they won. Now, even Bill Buckner, the victim of 20+ years of hate mail and death threats has been welcomed back to Fenway. Buffalo is, any always will be, just 1 championship away from all this bullshit.
