Hi. My name is Marti. Iim a Repat.
There are thousands of Buffalo Expats who have seen the light and made a conscious decision to move back to Buffalo. That makes us Repats!
No, we arenit crazy and we donit need a 12-step program. Weire smart. Weive lived other places and weive found that good old Buffalo is precisely where we want to be. Like Transplants, weire in Buffalo by choice, not by default.
Whether youire a Repat or a Transplant, register at REPATS and read all about others who are here because they want to be. Compare notes, commiserate and celebrate Buffalo. Under the auspices of Revitalize Buffalo and with the help of Buffalo Rising, we will become a formidable factor in the New Buffalo.
Both Repats and Transplants bring to Buffalo the Experience of having lived elsewhere (no grass-is-greener delusions for us!) and Expertise that may or may not have been found locally before we moved here. But more importantly, we bring Energy and Enthusiasm with us. We have not been beaten down by the false perception of a poor economy, and our enthusiasm has not been dampened by the challenges presented by local politics.
We are here because we want to be, and thatis very powerful.
We can appreciate the unrivaled magnificence of the architecture, enjoy the mere 15-minute commute to just about anywhere, celebrate the proximity to vast bodies of water and having an international border on our doorstep, revel in the low cost of living and the extraordinary quality of life, and see and support the renaissance that is taking place in this City of Very Good Neighbors n where people actually take the time to talk to one another, whether itis in line at Wegmans, strolling around Delaware Park or crossing Delaware Avenue.
Buffalo is a unique and wonderful place with serious lack of self esteem. Repats unite! If we harness our energy and enthusiasm and bring our experience and expertise to bear on strategic local issues, together we will come a significant force behind the renaissance that is revitalizing Buffalo!

As we mentioned in our previous post, we’re in the process of changing the Buffalo Rising site. We’re almost there as we expect to launch the new site on Friday, December 19th.
In the meantime, posting will be light as we log new stories in the new publishing system which will only be viewable when we launch on Friday.
As always, we appreciate our users’ patience as we make this transition but we promise it will be well worth it. With faster load times, a comment view …
Caroline Kennedy was in town for a visit with our mayor yesterday. A possible choice to succeed US Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, Kennedy's name has been mentioned along with that of Attorney General Andrew Cuomo (son of former New York Governor Mario Cuomo) and our own Byron Brown, among others.
Certainly, Kennedy has "been around politics" all of her life, which is to say she was born into a family of politicos and lived in the White House--neither of which would necessarily f …
Free light rail rides on downtown's above ground section could be derailed thanks to the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority's budget mess. That is the news coming out of a Buffalo Place meeting this morning. Facing a budget shortfall and reduced State operating assistance, the NFTA is scrambling for new revenue sources and is contemplating charging for rides along the lengthy downtown pedestrian mall.
Well it is Christmas time in the city and the NFTA helped put people and especially children into the mood in a very festive and fun way. One of my favorite memories of childhood was taking the train downtown with my grandfather. I would gaze out the windows and watch the tunnel speed by. It always felt like we were going a million miles an hour.
Then there was the ability to stand up and walk around during the ride without the need to be strapped down. It was always a fun time …

Decent paying jobs with benefits - someone said there was going to be a job fair in August, is that still on?

Same here Steve... I've lived in Boston for the past two years after graduating from college and came here for a job. Going to grad school in Rochester in the Fall and I've promised myself I will be back in Buffalo after that. At least I will be close enough to home for the next two years that I can come visit anytime I want!

I've FINALLY convinced my hub to move! We'll be there soon - ETA is somewhere beteween end of May to mid-July. It's scary to uproot your whole life (no jobs at 33? yikes!) - BUT I can't wait to really start living again back home in Buffalo. Chicago has been a nice place to visit, but Buffalo is where I want to stay!

I guess I would consider myself and expat, however I just don't want to admit it to myself. I live in Connecticut and while I live among pretty rural scenery, and in close proximity to a number of exciting big cities, I always refer to my home as Buffalo. People here are nice, but it's not the same kind of camaraderie that I am used to. I just moved here and I certainly need to adjust and give my new surroundings a chance cause I think it can be great here. If I play my cards right though I suspect that I will move back home eventually. A girl can go so long without her Sabres, Broadway Market, and cool Lake Erie breezes!

Ok Marti, you started this! What is your story? Where did you live before returning to Buffalo? What did you miss most about Buffalo while you were gone?...Nicole...my husband and I did exactly the same thing as you guys are doing, about 10 years ago, and we bought a house at the same time (with no incomes to pay the mortgage!). But it has worked out fine, and I bet it will for you, too. Relocating to Buffalo (from NYC) is still one of the best decisions we've ever made.

The Why (Not!) Guy
Transplant here... and to be honest it's tough sometimes. I love Buffalo, in so many ways, but, especially as I get older, my hometown calls too. Sometimes I feel like I have two hometowns; other times I feel like I don't have any.
The great thing is that it's so much easier for expats and especially transplants to see all the wonderful things Buffalo has to offer, without the baggage of familiarity or negativity.

Nicole- I remember you, I think, from earlier comments on BR.O? Congrats...
I'm a re-pat, brought my wife along, too. It's been great. It would take forever to enumerate all my favorite things about the place, but I have to say: we have it much better here than we know, often. Too many 'lifers' haven't seen enough of the rest of the world (or the rest of the world enough, take your pick) to see how, in the long run, the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages in Buffalo.

My partner & I were in Charlotte, NC for 7 years. We both hail from Buffalo and missed it so much that we decided to make the move back. You wouldn't believe how happy we are that we did it! It was a difficult decision, but you can't beat Buffalo for real estate, food, people, seasons, etc. We struggled with the decision knowing the tax raping, political unrest, and "lack of jobs" that is associated with Buffalo... but threw caution to the wind and up and did it! I can definitely say I'm so much more of an "ambassador" to Buffalo having lived elsewhere!

I'm a soon to be repat. I've lived in many diverse and interesting places while my ex-spouse was in the Air Force, Tukey, Belgium, Korea. I currently live in Colorado Springs, which is a beautiful city with lots of sunshine and gorgeous mountains but I miss home. I miss my family and friends and the City of Good Neighbors.
I feel that Buffalo is one of the best places to live in the eastern US. Oh what the heck, it's one of the best places in the world! The last time I was home I felt a wonderful undercurrent of energy and excitement about the city that I hadn't experienced before.
I can't wait to come home!

Have been in California since 1981 and come back to visit twice a year , to see family and friends. I must say that the last few years have really got me thinking. There is a quiet, yet persistent resurgence in Bflo. Pride in homeownership, fabulous resturaunts, great local music and a somewhat more visible gay community. Basically all the things lacking 20 something years ago. I love running into people in San Francisco that are from Bflo.! It always starts with," Where did you go to high school?". There is that sense of connectedness almost immediately. Who knows, I too may be a Repat too. And if not, will always come for a visit!
