Hemp: It's What's Cookin'
When I stopped by Buffalo Hemp Outfitters I didn't expect to be bringing a meal home with me. A hat, a blanket, maybe, but dinner? So it came as some surprise to me to learn that hemp is actually considered a "super food" by many people.
Now, I don't know who Dr. Theimer is but he is right-on advocating Hanf and Natur's Hemp Pasta. Of course, being a doctor he is probably interested in the nutritional value of hemp seeds. They are, it turns out, a good source of highly digestible protein, full of fiber and essential fatty acids, and vitamins and minerals. So that's a bunch of big league plus on the health front. But for a food renegade like me it was the thought of trying something new that got me juiced up.
And I can tell you I'm hooked. Hemp seeds have a crunchy texture and nutty flavor that isn't quite like anything I've ever eaten. You can see specks of the seeds in the pasta and even after it is boiled you can detect a slight crunch.
The hemp pasta broke down a little faster than the pasta I am accustomed to eating (the packages says to boil for 6 minutes but I'll probably take it off the heat a little sooner next time). We ate ours with a vodka marinara sauce and sautEed zucchini. The meal was really good and afterwards I felt a little less stuffed than I normally do after eating pasta.
I also tried the cranberry/hemp trail bar which was fantastic. Hemp seeds are just a natural fit for these nut and fruit concoctions and the mix of slightly tart cranberries with the hemp seeds made me realize I have wasted an awful lot of valuable mouth time on inferior products. There are other varieties of trail-bar available but I don't know if I'll ever be able to try the others without the sad pallor of a lost opportunity washing over me. Hyperbole? Try one and let us know.

Ten years ago, the downtown of My Fair City was forever altered when a Big Dinosaur appeared on the scene. Thankfully—unlike 1950’s Tokyo—when this dino showed up our downtown wasn’t flattened, but considerably improved. Dinosaur Bar B Que, a restaurant that originated in downtown Syracuse in the 1980’s, planted its foot in downtown Rochester in 1998. It was an instant hit—it’s common to have a line waiting to get in at all times. And it’s clearly Hog Heaven— …
Cecelia’s Ristorante & Martini Bar is prepared to guide their guests through the tastes of fall with their brand new fall menu. Although it is getting a bit too cold for the patio, the hardy food inside will warm things right up.
I started out with the Harvest Salad ($8) and the “Lumpy” Crab Cakes ($9). The Harvest Salad was served with a rosemary citrus vinaigrette, and topped with apricots, beets, pine nuts, walnuts, dried cranberries, and other assorted dried fruits. …
One of the perks my daughter's friends enjoy about a sleepover at my home (other than rearranging the furniture for movie time) are the crepes I serve our guests in the morning.
I can remember sleepover breakfasts from when I was a kid that consisted of potato chips and soda from the night before. If the lack of sleep didn't make us dizzy and irritable enough, the fat, salt and sugar we ingested in the morning would make sure the entire day would be counted for lost. Ugh.
Crepe …
Steven Calvaneso, a well-known Buffalo entrepreneur who has launched a number of city and suburban restaurants during his career, is shrinking his holdings to a single restaurant location. The Buffalo News has the full story, but it's clear the one-time mayoral candidate has faced struggles with his many operations. As a result of these moves, Calvaneso is left with Bacchus Wine Bar & Restaurant on Chippewa and his catering operation at Babeville.
Months ago, Calvaneso clos …

Hemp foods are always at the top of my list. I am a vegetarian and they are a great source of all the many essential nutrients that I need in just one food source!
