Healthy Lakes, Healthy Lives Boat Tour: June 4th- June 9th

For the first weekend in June, the discussion about Buffalo’s waterfront will have a different tone. In concurrence with the arrival of the Earth Voyager, the fastest sailing vessel on the Great Lakes, a coalition of organizations will be working to raise awareness of the need for serious and immediate restoration of the Great Lakes’ ecosystems.
Event organizers have volunteered hundreds of hours to bring the Earth Voyager to Buffalo, and organize the schedule of events. Organizers include: Assemblyman Sam Hoyt’s Office; Buffalo Audubon Society; Buffalo Niagara Partnership; Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper; Buffalo Ornithological Society; Buffalo Place; Citizens Campaign for the Environment; Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo; Con-gressman Brian Higgins’ Office; Great Lakes Center-Buffalo State College; Great Lakes Sport Fishing Council; Great Lakes United; Ecology & Environment, Inc.; English Consulting; Stevens Marine Insurance; Penn Dixie Paleontological and Outdoor Education Center
Financial sponsors for the Buffalo port of call are the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo, Great Lakes United and HSBC Bank.
The following is a schedule of the events on that weekend:
June 5th – Community Forum | Discussion entitles “Priorities for Great Lakes Protection” | Presented by Attorney General Andrew Cuomo | Woodlawn Beach State Park Nature Center | 7pm
June 6th – Press Conference of Elected Officials | Call for increased Great Lakes Restoration | Commercial Slip, Inner Harbor | 4pm
June 7th – Paddle Tour – East River Wetlands of Grand Island | Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper, to register, call 716-852-7483 or visit: www.bnriverkeeper.org | 8 am to 11 am
June 7th – Great Lakes Expo | See the Earth Voyager, visit the Commercial Slip, learn about the Great Lakes and how you can help make a difference. FREE and open to the public | Commercial Slip, Inner Harbor | 10 am to 4 pm
June 8th – Nature and Lighthouse Tour | Cruise on the Miss Buffalo from the Erie Basin Marina | To register, call (716) 627-4560 | 8:30 am to 1:30 pm

A Kennedy Visits Buffalo
Caroline Kennedy was in town for a visit with our mayor yesterday. A possible choice to succeed US Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, Kennedy's name has been mentioned along with that of Attorney General Andrew Cuomo (son of former New York Governor Mario Cuomo) and our own Byron Brown, among others.

Downtown Free Fare Zone May be Axed
Free light rail rides on downtown's above ground section could be derailed thanks to the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority's budget mess. That is the news coming out of a Buffalo Place meeting this morning. The NFTA Santa Ride
Well it is Christmas time in the city and the NFTA helped put people and especially children into the mood in a very festive and fun way. One of my favorite memories of childhood was taking the train downtown with my grandfather. I would gaze out the windows and watch the tunnel speed by. It always felt like we were going a million miles an hour.
