HDR @ Gallery 141B
If you have an interest in Buffalo and photography, you may want to stop into Gallery 141B this Saturday. Gallery owner, Jim ‘Cosmic’ Collins, will be hosting an opening aka throwing a party and featuring some pretty unique artwork. I stopped in to the gallery to check out some of the work, and while I was there I ran into Caroline Bronckers and her husband Edwin (who will also be showing) while she was setting up for the show. I asked Cosmic what sort of photographic technique she was using and he relayed the following to me:
“Caroline Bronckers has a big interest in Buffalo imagery, and she is one of the few artists who is experimenting with HDR photography (here). This is the first large professional presentation in Buffalo of High Dynamic Range photography, - the idea is for people to understand what HDR is, and how it can be used and shown. The value is that you’re getting definition in the foreground and the far background. You get both the lightest and darkest areas of imagery, which is lacking in normal photography. This is a further reach… a different potential that is really important. There is a dynamic to the colorization that uses a series of bracketing photographic exposures… the apertures change the exposure… and then they color map it. I wanted to feature High Dynamic range the first time that I saw it. I wanted to bring it into the gallery and put it on Buffalo’s map. This is really big nationally. It’s a huge movement that is just starting to appear in Buffalo. We’re trying to bring interesting shows to the gallery, and we’re having an all day party and reception this Saturday. It will be a great time to meet a number of artists who will be painting inside and outside… there might be as many as twelve artists at the gallery on that day.”

Those photos are pretty damn cool looking. The colors are so pronounced, it almost reminds me of the filming styles used in Sin City and 300. Everything looks so sharp that its almost cartoonish. Very nice photos.

HDR is simply blending two different exposures of the same image together in Photoshop. I'm not sure why it's being considered it's own "art" form per se or even subdivision within photography. It's a computer trick, that's all.

Yeah the lines between photography and photoshop have been blurred from the beginning. The very first photoshop tools were nothing more than computerized versions of techniques used on real photosensitive paper. Dodge, burn etc etc.
They are fantastic images by the way. The detail makes it look like CG.

NCS: You're quite wrong about HDR being a computer "trick". It is way more than you describe – it is a technique, and very much IS an art form if done right (and admittedly I've done it very VERY wrong a bunch of times!). Why do you think later versions of Photoshop have HDR capabilities? It is because only the latest versions of Photoshop can work with 32 bit images – which is what a true HDRi is. And a good HDRi is made up of at least 3 or more exposures, not just two.
Unfortunately while trying to describe HDR in the article, "Cosmic" got some things mixed up and some terminology wrong... which I can explain here but it would take way too long. So for anyone interested, stop by the Gallery on Saturday and I'll try to explain in person. You'll be able to see realistic or "true-tone" images as well as extreme tonemapped conversions, just to give a broad range of examples.
I wish the images in the article were as clear as they really should be, but I'm sure for the sake of the web they were compressed a bit. If you come to the show though, you will see some big prints of the above.
BTW, Rich (NCS): *Hint* I bet you don't remember your old landlady now, do ya? :) Glad to see you've gotten settled in here.

Hey Deeva - How's it goin?! Things are going well, lots of work - that's for sure (fixing up the house on Linwood alone is a fulltime job). I dunno, I've looked into HDRi before since it's so visually stunning the first time you see it - but I'm not sure as to the "why" of it (ie - it looks neat, but doesn't get me there). I know that makes me an elitist bastard :) - but I'm a "photojournalist," so I'm snobby by nature anyway!

Sorry, but these photos kind of make my eyes bleed. I'm all for using digital cameras and Photoshop to go beyond the dynamic range of the medium, but these look unatural and just plain cheesy.
